Patent number: 5338681Abstract: The invention relates to a method for isolating a polysaccharide extracellularly producing bacteria from a mixed culture of non-polysaccharide and polysaccharide producing bacteria, The method uses a streaking technique on a nutrient medium containing unsubstituted gellan as a gellant. The polysaccharide extracellularly producing bacteria are isolated by the act of non-polysaccharide extracellularly producing bacteria sinking into the nutrient medium. However, the polysaccharide extracellularly producing bacteria do not sink into the nutrient medium. The isolated cells are capable of producing an exopolysaccharide such as P4. Further the isolated cells are capable of producing gellan. The specific polysaccharide producing bacteria are of the genera Auromonas, Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1992Date of Patent: August 16, 1994Assignee: Gesellschaft fur Biotechnologische Forschung mbH GBFInventors: Wolf-Dieter Deckwer, Detlef Lobas, Adrian Schumpe

Patent number: 5266608Abstract: Novel non-elastomeric biomedical adhesive compositions for calcified tissues, are described. The compositions are characterized by a network structure which is obtained by the reaction of a polyisocyanate having at least two isocyanate groups with at least one polyol which possesses surface wetting properties with the participation of compounds selected from calcium and phosphorus, optional in the presence of a catalyst. The polyisocyanate is selected from aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic compounds and preferred amounts are in the range of 20% to 80% by weight of the total amount of reactants. The polyol is selected from polyalkylene ether glycols and polyester glycols containing between 25 to 75 carbon atoms and preferred amounts are in the range of 10% to 80% by weight of the total amount of reactants. The adhesive compositions were found to produce a fast bonding of the calcified tissues, with a joint strength of above 0.5 N/sq.mm.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1991Date of Patent: November 30, 1993Assignees: Technion Research & Dev't Foundation, Ltd., GBF Gesellschaft fur Biotechnologische ForschungInventors: Dov Katz, Esther Brandeis, Joachim Klein

Patent number: 5256556Abstract: Invertase is produced by a process wherein, first the yeast cells are disrupted to produce a disrupted cell suspension, second the disrupted cell suspension is adjusted to an acidic pH, third denatured undersired proteins are removed with the cell detritus and lastly the invertase is isolated. The improvement of the invention to the state of the art is that it comprises subjecting the disrupted cell suspension prior to removing the undesired proteins and cell detritus, to a pH of less than 4.5 and to a heat treatment in a continuous thermal denaturation system at a temperature in a range of from 44.degree. C. to about 51.degree.
