  • Patent number: 5167420
Abstract: Apparatus for forming a groove in a glass tube without contacting the glass tube in the groove region. The apparatus includes a pair of chucks for holding opposite ends of the glass tube. The chucks are coupled to a motor for rotating the glass tube about its longitudinal axis. The apparatus further includes one or more torches for noncontact heating of the groove region of the glass tube sufficiently to soften the glass tube in the groove region. The chucks which hold the glass tube are axially movable for stretching and then compressing the glass tube along its longitudinal axis, when the glass tube has been softened in the groove area. The chucks are rotated during heating, stretching and compressing of the glass tube.

  • Patent number: 5151215
Abstract: A method for eliminating carbonaceous contaminants and preventing the hydration/solubilization of the alumina protective coating of a phosphor is described. The method involves the heating a fluidized alumina coated phosphor in a fluidized bed at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to preclude adversely affecting the protective oxide coating on the phosphor during subsequent water-based suspension processing without detrimentally altering the phosphor. After heating the fluidized phosphor is cooled and then added to a water-based suspension. The conditions for treating a manganese activated zinc silicate phosphor having a protective alumina coating are heating the fluidized phosphor at a temperature between about 700.degree. C. and about 850.degree. C. for a period of time from about 15 minutes to about 20 hours.A fluorescent lamp containing the phosphor prepared by the above described method is also described.

  • Patent number: 5148359
Abstract: An arrangement includes a network for connection between an AC power supply and the input of a DC power supply containing rectifiers and a filter capacitor. The network forms a third order, damped low-pass filter that waveshapes the AC input current so as to either reduce or remove the magnitude of harmonics which primarily cause distortion of the input current waveform. In a preferred embodiment, the waveshaping network includes an inductor connected in series with the input of the DC power supply. A series combination of a damping resistor and a first capacitor is connected in parallel with the series inductor. A second capacitor is connected in shunt with the input terminals of the DC power supply. The waveshaping network increases the power factor and lowers the total harmonic distortion the input of the DC power supply presents to the AC power supply.

The network forms a fourth order, damped lowpass filter that waveshapes the AC input current so as to either reduce or remove the magnitude of harmonics which primarily cause distortion of the input current waveform. • Patent number: 5146140
Abstract: A method and apparatus which prevent mercury and fill gas loss in capacitively coupled electrodeless lamps operated at low frequencies (below 100 MHz). The lamp includes a lamp envelope with an inner coating of phosphor. Outer electrodes coupled to a radio frequency source are positioned around the outer surface of the lamp envelope. The lamp contains a fill gas (e.g. mercury and argon) which forms a plasma causing UV radiation which excites the phosphor. Mercury loss is prevented by providing a pair of inner conductors aligned with the outer conductors but electrically insulated therefrom. The inner conductors prevent the mercury and fill gas ions from embedding themselves in the lamp envelope.
