  • Patent number: 4927059
Abstract: A device for dispensing a striped mixture of two components of a paste-like flowable substance includes a lower container in which one of the components is retained. A dosing unit mounted on the container, includes a pushbutton which is depressed for forcing the first component from the container through a set of valves into a compartment of the dosing unit, through a centrally located tubular element within the compartment, and out of an upper outlet for dispensement from the device. The interior of the compartment between the tubular element is filled with a second component, which is forced upward by the first component entering the compartment, and into the tubular element via openings therethrough, for mixing with the first component as it moves through the tubular element and out of the outlet, for dispensing a striped mixture of the first and second components.

  • Patent number: 4927946
Abstract: Unpurified 2-bromo-2-nitro-1,3-propanediol is used as the starting material for a process for the preparation of 5-bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane from 2-nitro-1,3-propanediol without the use of an organic solvent on an industrial scale. This is carried out in such a way that in a first stage a mixture of bromine and aqueous hydrogen bromide solution is cooled and an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or an alkaline-earth metal salt of 2-nitro-1,3-propanediol is added at such a rate that, with cooling, the maximum reaction temperature does not exceed 30.degree. C., and then in a second reaction stage paraformaldehyde and sulfuric acid are added, left to react above room temperature, and the organic phase separated.

  • Patent number: 4920090
Abstract: A new method of forming agglomerates of fine powdered solids comprises dispersing the powder in a chemically inert carrier liquid that also contains a dissolved binder precursor polymer with cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride groups on the polymer chain. The dispersion is shaped and then brought into contact with a second carrier liquid that contains polyamines. The polyamines react with the anhydride groups on the other polymer to form an insoluble binder polymer that hardens the shaped dispersion. The hardened shape can then be separated from the liquids and/or further reacted if desired to produce amide bonds in the final agglomerates. The method is useful for forming mechanically and thermally stable agglomerates of such materials as activated carbon, metals dispersed on catalyst carriers, etc.
