Abstract: Provided is a process for the production of shaped vermiculite articles having excellent resistance to water dispersibility from an aqueous dispersion of vermiculite lamellae having incorporated therein a cationic polyquaternary ammonium salt.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of delaying the metathesis polymerization of strained ring cycloolefins by addition of certain nitrogen-containing compounds including various aromatic amines or mixtures thereof.
Abstract: A process for preparing molded objects wherein a liquid reaction mass comprised of a metathesis polymerizable cycloolefin, a metathesis polymerization catalyst, a catalyst activator and a reaction rate moderator are charged to a mold wherein polymerization will take place, the improvement wherein said catalyst activator comprises a dialkylzinc compound. Significantly increased gel and cure times are obtained with the dialkylzinc compounds as compared to the use of aluminum alkyl activator compounds. The gel and cure times may be further controlled by the addition of a phenolic compound to the tungsten or molybdenum compound or by the addition of a Lewis base.
Abstract: A compound of the general formula, ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 independently are --H, --CH.sub.3, or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3 ; and R.sub.3 is alkyl of from 1 to 10 carbons or aryl of from 6 to 10 carbons.
Abstract: A uniaxially oriented, polyolefin film is prepared by melt blending a mixture of a polyolefin, an inert filler, a processing aid such as calcium stearate, and optionally a stabilizer, maintaining the moisture level in the melt blend below 700 ppm, casting a film, and uniaxially stretching the film at least about 2 times its original casting dimensions in one direction until the film has a sufficient number of elongated, narrow shaped, microporous voids in order to create a CO.sub.2 and O.sub.2 permeance in the range of 5,000 to 10,000,000 cc/100.sup.2 -atm-day. Such a film is used in a controlled atmosphere packaging container as a panel in a window for a controlled flow or flux of CO.sub.2 and O.sub.2 through its wall in an otherwise gas impermeable container.
Abstract: Non-asbestos elastomeric insulating materials for rocket motors are disclosed. The insulating materials are low in density (between about 0.035 and 0.050 lb./cubic inch) and comprise crosslinked elastomeric polymers (100 parts by weight of a crosslinkable elastomeric polymer that is substantially saturated and about 5-50 parts by weight of a crosslinkable, substantially unsaturated, elastomeric polymer) in which are dispersed between about 10 and 100 (preferably 15-75) parts by weight of a char forming organic fiber selected from polyaramide pulps, between 1 and 15 parts by weight of a peroxide crosslinker, and between about 0 and 150 parts by weight organic and/or inorganic particulate. The insulating materials issue little smoke, have notable erosion resistance and can be tailored to have thermal, mechanical and other properties of desired character. Ingredients such as supplemental elastomers, oils and lubricants enhance the processability and green properties such as tack of the insulating materials.
Abstract: It has been found that water stable articles, such as films and sheets, can be prepared from chemically delaminated vermiculite platelets if radical or ionically polymerizable organo-substituted onium salts are ionically bonded to the platelets and the resulting system cured.
Abstract: Disclosed are novel, cross-linked or cross-linkable linear poly(organohydrosiloxanes) wherein the cross-linking units are derived from polycyclic polyenes. These polymers or prepolymers are prepared by reacting or partially reacting the poly(organohydrosiloxanes) with the polycyclic polyene in the presence of a catalyst.
Abstract: End connectors of filament wound tubes are disclosed. The end connector uses an upset region at an end of the filament wound tube as a base for mounting a threaded ring around the tube. The ring is threaded to a sleeve mounted also around this upset region. The sleeve threads to a coupling on the other side of the upset region. The coupling carries means for connecting the filament wound tube to another body. In forming the end connector, the sleeve and coupling are assembled about the upset region and the ring, assembled on the body of the filament wound tube on the other side of the upset, is threaded to the sleeve.
Abstract: In a method for applying heat to a web, the web is subjected to dielectric heating in discrete segments, arranged transverse to the web, by modules containing pairs of electrodes. The heat thus generated can be used to vary the moisture and/or temperature profile. Each module has a built-in self modulating moisture leveler. Other properties of the web, which are varied by such process operations as wet pressing, drying, calendering, etc. and which themselves are influenced by the moisture/temperature of the web can thereby be also controlled by said dielectric heating in closed-loop fashion.
Abstract: A filament winding system includes a head that selects the number of tows within a winding band while winding and positions the winding band directly on the mandrel according to its contours.
