Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making a cross-linked poly(dicyclopentadiene) with a metathesis-catalyst system, where the metathesis-catalyst system contains an organoaluminum or organoaluminum halide activator and a pentavalent tantalum catalyst. In a preferred embodiment, the cross-linked polymer is formed by combining, in a first place, a plurality of reactant streams, one reactant stream which contains the activator, a second reactant stream which contains the catalyst and at least one reactant stream which contains dicyclopentadiene; then injecting the combined reactant streams into a second place, such as a mold, where polymerization occurs. Use of the pentavalent tantalum catalyst results in the formation of a cross-linked polymer having less color and greater transparency than cross-linked poly(dicyclopentadiene) made without a pentavalent tantalum catalyst.

Abstract: Disclosed are aqueous polyacrylate dispersions, i.e., aqueous latex dispersions of acrylate polymers, having improved rheological and stability characteristics, prepared by polymerization of acrylic esters, methacrylic esters and mixtures thereof in the presence of, by weight of the total monomer content, (a) from about 0.05 to about 5% of at least one non-surface active protective colloid, (b) from about 0.01 to 1% of at least one or more initiators selected from the group consisting of azo based initiators and organo-soluble, water-insoluble peroxide initiators, and (c) greater than 0.01% to about 0.05% of a water-soluble peroxide initiator. The resultant aqueous polyacrylate dispersions are useful in the manufacture of latex paints, binders for nonwoven materials, water-based inks, paper coatings and water-borne adhesives, such as pressure-sensitive adhesives.
Abstract: A method of forming a microwave integrated circuit is disclosed. A hole is bored in an alumina substrate and a plug having a diameter substantially equal to the hole is provided. The hole and the perimeter of the plug are coated with a thermally fusable dielectric composition and the plug is embedded in the hole. Heating the substrate fuses the plug is place and crystalizes the composition into a glass with compatible thermal expansion. At least one face of the substrate and plug are then polished to provide a planar surface. The metalized circuit is then formed on this assembly, which minimizes conductive tracking on the substrate and facilitates alignment of the circuit with the plug.

Abstract: An improved process for preparing fiber rods useful as cigarette filter tips comprises feeding a synthetic fiber tow through an air jet bulker directly into the garniture of a conventional cigarette filter making apparatus. The process allows production of filters with lower denier tow than has heretofore been possible while affording to the manufacturer greater versatility to change filter characteristics more readily.
Abstract: A method for controlling opacity, softness, and strength of polyolefin fiber-containing nonwoven material and the corresponding nonwoven material by utilizing at least 25%, based on web weight, of polyolefin filament (a) having an original spun denier not exceeding about 4 dpf, (b) having a final drawn denier of about 1.9-3.0 dpf, and (c) a delta cross-sectional configuration.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for simultaneously generating spatial profiles of moisture, thickness, and basis weight across a moving web of paper in a paper making machine. The apparatus includes a plurality of means for generating first and second beams of coherent microwave radiation and for generating signals proportional to the intensity of radiation applied to, reflected from, and transmitted through the web. The incident, reflectance, and transmittance signals for the two frequencies are used to solve simultaneous equations to generate moisture, thickness, and basis weight values at various positions across the web.

Abstract: Polyarylene polyethers, made by a process comprising reacting a dihydroxy compound and strong and weak bases in a liquid reaction medium at 100.degree.-200.degree. C. to form a double salt and then reacting the double salt with a slight molar excess of dihalobenzenoid compound bearing two replaceable halogens, are disclosed. The process reliably produces halogen-terminated polyarylene polyethers of select degrees of polymerization and desirable correspondence between weight and number average molecular weights. In subsequent steps amine-terminated polyarylene polyethers are made using the strong and weak bases. The resulting amine-terminated polyethers have a low, select degree of polymerization, desirable correspondence between weight and number average molecular weights and high level of amine termination.
Abstract: Damage tolerant composites comprising high strength filaments in the form of bundles or tows of continuous fiber and a tough phase separated, crosslinked epoxy resin matrix are disclosed. The crosslinked epoxy resin matrix comprises infusible particles made from a rubber polymer that reside primarily between piles of the composite and critically have a median particle size between 10-75 microns. Prepregs for making the damage tolerant composites and methods of making such prepregs and the epoxy resin compositions thereof are also disclosed. The epoxy resin compositions comprise the infusible particles which become segregated as to size on a surface layer of the prepreg during the process of combining the high strength filaments of the prepreg and the resin containing the epoxy resin composition.
Abstract: Disclosed is the incorporation into a two-part metathesis-catalyst system of a halogen containing hydrocarbyl additive, where the hydrocarbyl additive contains at least one trihalogen substituted atom or at least one activated halogen atom. The use of this catalyst system to polymerize dicyclopentadiene results in a thermoset polymer containing low levels of residual monomer. Also disclosed is a preferred embodiment of dicyclopentadiene polymerization where the two parts of the metathesis-catalyst system, plus dicyclopentadiene are combined in the mixing head of a reaction injection molding machine and then injected into a mold where the dicyclopentadiene rapidly sets up into a thermoset polymer.
