Abstract: Various embodiments are described herein that make use of a lost frame concealment method for processing data frames received from transmission over a communications channel. The method involves determining whether a current data frame is a bad frame, performing source decoding on the current data frame with one or more parameters that are limited by a first set of one or more values if the current data frame is a bad frame, and performing source decoding on the current data frame with one or more parameters that are not limited if the current data frame is a good frame.
Abstract: A mobile station is provided. The mobile station includes a processor programmed to promote sending a classmark change message responsive to receiving a command from a network, wherein the command requires a capability that the mobile station does not possess.
Abstract: The described embodiments involve use of a mobile communication device in the context of facilitating contact from within a telephone application. The described embodiments are primarily concerned with enabling quick and efficient access to contact methods other than by telephone from within the telephone application. This is done by generating a contact list, which may have one or more contacts, using an integrated dialing field provided by the telephone application and then displaying all available contact types or methods available for contacting a particular contact selected from the list.

Abstract: Antenna apparatus, and an associated methodology, for a multi-frequency-band-capable radio device, such as a quad-band mobile station. The antenna apparatus forms a hybrid strip antenna having a pair of resonant elements. A first resonant element forms a peripheral loop extending about the periphery of a substrate. A meander line extends along a portion of the peripheral loop. And, second resonant element is formed of an L-shaped strip. The peripheral loop is resonant at a set of frequencies, and the L-shaped strip is resonant at a single frequency. Through appropriate selection of the lengths of the resonant elements, the frequencies at which the elements are resonant are controlled.

Abstract: A housing for a mobile communication device includes a housing member that encloses the mobile communication device. An opening is positioned in the housing member for accepting a battery. A door is positioned over the opening in the housing member, with an access port defined through the housing member positioned under the door for contacting an internal element of a mobile communication device, such as an antenna. A method for testing an antenna in a mobile communication device having a housing with an antenna access port defined therethrough, an antenna, a battery compartment, and a removable cover positioned over at least part of the housing is also described.
Abstract: To provide a consistent (i.e., single-mode) user interface in each mode of operation available on a multi-mode mobile terminal, aspects of the user interface used for a second mode (e.g., the CDMA mode) are emulated by the mobile terminal when the mobile terminal is operating in a first mode (e.g., the GSM mode). Responsive to receiving, while operating in a first mode, an indication of a given user interface interaction, the multi-mode mobile terminal determines the call state. Based on the given user interface interaction and the call state, the multi-mode mobile terminal selects a candidate message corresponding to operation of the multi-mode mobile terminal in a second mode. The multi-mode mobile terminal then converts the candidate message to one or more first-mode messages and transmits the one or more first-mode messages to the MSC at the second wireless network subsystem.
Abstract: A wireless communications device can be triggered by a user in a duress situation to provide to a predetermined recipient, or to a monitoring service, a duress message containing emergency-response information, such as GPS coordinates, a photograph and/or an audio clip to facilitate an emergency response to the duress situation. The wireless device can periodically send follow-up duress messages to provide updated GPS data, photos or other information. The wireless device monitoring can also reply to specific queries from the monitoring service to provide requested information that would be most useful to the recipient attempting to coordinate an emergency response. In the event that the device is outside data packet coverage, the duress message can be transmitted using an alternate mode of communication such as SMS or MMS. If no mode of communication is available, the device stores the duress message until communications are possible.
Abstract: A mobile wireless communications device includes a housing and circuit board in the housing and having radio frequency (RF) circuitry and a power amplifier and microphone mounted thereon. An antenna is carried within the housing and operative with the RF circuitry. An RF shield surrounds and isolates the microphone from the RF circuitry, power amplifier and antenna and shields the microphone from radiated energy generated from the RF circuitry, antenna or power amplifier.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for monitoring the quality of a communication session with a mobile device. Should the communication session degrade, rather than dropping the communication session the user of a device communicating with the mobile device is prompted to wait while an attempt is made to improve the quality of the communication session. Similarly if the user of the mobile device moves out of a coverage area, rather than dropping the communication session the user of the device communicating with the mobile device is prompted to wait until a new communication session can be established.
Abstract: Users of a computer are prevented from directly accessing certain hardware for which a driver is installed on the computer. The users are provided a limited, indirect manner to access the hardware for a specific purpose or to do a specific job. One example of such hardware is a wireless hardware communication interface. The wireless activity of the computer may be restricted so that the wireless hardware communication interface is prevented from communicating with any devices compatible with the wireless hardware communication interface other than one or more specific devices.
Abstract: An antenna tube configured to accommodate a grounding clip and an antenna, the antenna tube having a cylindrical tube having an upper end and an inner end opposite the upper end; a circumferentially extending groove in the cylindrical tube located between the upper end and the inner end; and a tapered lip at the inner end of the cylindrical tube, wherein the grounding clip fits between the circumferentially extending groove and the tapered lip, and at least a portion of the antenna slidably fits into the upper end of the cylindrical tube.
Abstract: A system and method for maintaining a persistent connection is provided. In an embodiment, a system includes a client that connects to a web-server via a physical link that is bandwidth-constrained. The physical link also includes at least one network address translation (“NAT”) router that is configured to terminate idle connections between the client and the web-server. The client is configured to send keep-alive packets to the web-server in order to reduce the likelihood of the NAT router terminating the connection. The keep-alive packets are sent on a variable basis that is intended to reduce bandwidth consumption while ensuring that the NAT router does not deem the connection idle and terminate the connection.
Abstract: A synchronization (sync) signal detector and associated method detect the occurrence of a known sync signal in a received signal. The known sync signal is generated and correlated with the received signal to generate a correlation waveform. A peak value of the correlation waveform, indicative of the occurrence of the sync signal in the received signal, is detected and used to determine a timing offset between the received signal and the sync signal. The sync signal is then shifted in time to compensate for the timing offset. Such shifting of the sync signal is simpler and requires substantially less processing time and resources compared to known sync signal detection schemes, in which a received signal or the sampling timing of a received signal is shifted to compensate for timing offset.
Abstract: A notification service and correspondingly configured wireless device for providing asynchronous communications over a communication network for an application of the wireless device in communication with a selected service. The selected service has a source schema definition including an output notification definition associated with a correlation ID. The notification service comprises a reverse schema definition of the source schema definition such that the reverse schema definition includes an input notification operation definition corresponding to the output notification definition. The input definition is associated with the correlation ID and a parameter list of the output definition. The output definition is for defining an output message of the selected source that corresponds to an input message of the notification service defined by the input definition.

Abstract: An information browser system and method enables sending of information requests to remote information sources and receiving of requested information from the remote sources on a wireless communication device. Information in any of a plurality of formats, including WML, HTML and WMLScript, is converted into a format in which the information can be displayed or otherwise further processed by the device. Information browsing functions may also be integrated with other communication functions on a mobile communication device.
Abstract: In one illustrative method, a periodic location update timer value is broadcasted by a wireless communication network and received and stored in memory of a mobile station. A request for data service is transmitted by the mobile station to a wireless communication network, and the request is reattempted at least one time in response to identifying a rejection of the request. If the request for the data service is accepted in response to the request, the mobile station operates in the wireless communication network using the data service. On the other hand, if the request for the data service is not accepted, the mobile station is set in a data service deregistered state. A timer is initialized with an initial value that is less than the periodic location update timer value and started. In response to an expiration of the timer, the mobile station repeats the transmission of the request for the data service and any reattempts in response to any rejections of the request.
