Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for sending a data block in an OFDM, or other MCM, communication system with reduced PAPR is provided. The data block is combined with a random scrambling sequence. An IDFT operation is performed upon the combined sequence, and its PAPR, peak-to-average power ratio, is calculated. The PAPR is compared against a threshold. If the PAPR is smaller than a threshold, the transformed, combination sequence is transmitted. Otherwise, a different scrambling sequence, if available, is used to form a new combination sequence, and the process iterates until either a PAPR smaller than the threshold is obtained, or a pre-defined maximum number of iterations is reached. If the maximum number of iterations is reached and no combination sequence is created that leads to an acceptable PAPR, then the transformed, combination sequence that exhibits the smallest PAPR level is selected for transmission.
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a manner by which to page an access terminal of a radio communication system to alert the access terminal of a pending call, or other communication. More particularly, the present invention relates to apparatus, and an associated method, that provides for the generation, sending, and analysis of a quick page message upon a paging channel, such as a QPCH (quick paging channel) defined in an exemplary cellular communication system. The page message is formed in a manner that reduces the likelihood of occurrence of false wakeup of an access terminal. Excessive battery depletion, as a result of false wakeup of the access terminal, is avoided.

Abstract: While populating an e-mail message with, among other details, an e-mail address for a receiver, an image of the sender is included as part of the e-mail message. Advantageously, at a device in use to execute an e-mail client application on behalf of the receiver, the e-mail client application may automatically add the included image to an address book entry associated with the identity of the sender. Alternatively, the user may be prompted to allow the association of the image with the address book entry of the sender of the message. Later, upon receiving an incoming call from the sender with corresponding CLID information, the call display application may perform a lookup of the CLID information and display the image associated, in the address book, with the sender.

Abstract: A method for eliminating voicemail notifications on a wireless device for a voicemail message that a user has previously been notified of, comprising the steps of: storing information on the wireless device about the voicemail message; comparing incoming information of a new voicemail notification received by the wireless device against the information stored in the storing step; and notifying the user of the voicemail message only if the incoming information differs from the information stored in the storing step.
Abstract: An apparatus, and an associated method for paging an access terminal to alert the access terminal of a pending communication. A paging message is generated that includes both a partial identifier and a paging indicator bit. The paging message further includes a field that identifies the length of the partial identifier and a field that identifies how many partial identifiers are included in the message.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in controlling the loading of wireless access points (APs) in a wireless local area network (WLAN) in support of legacy terminals are disclosed. The WLAN has at least a first AP and a second wireless AP adjacent the first wireless AP. An indication which indicates whether a loading of the second wireless AP is greater than a predetermined threshold is identified. When the indication indicates thai the loading is greater than the predetermined threshold, a first nominal radio frequency (RF) transmission power of the first wireless AP is increased in order to increase a first RF coverage area of the first wireless AP. A second nominal RF transmission power of the second wireless AP is correspondingly reduced in order to reduce a second RF coverage area of the second wireless AP.
Abstract: A wireless communications device generates a message from a map application to enable a recipient of the message to view a location on a map. After a user selects a location to be sent to the recipient, the map application determines location information associated with the location and generates the message to be sent to the recipient. The message contains a link to enable the recipient to download the map showing the location and further contains the location information embedded as text within the message. The map application can determine whether the location is based on a GPS position fix, whether it is a Point of Interest or whether it is part of a map route. In each case, predetermined text is automatically embedded in the message to convey the location information to the recipient.
Abstract: Ephemeris data is downloaded intelligently to a GPS-enabled wireless communications device based on user activity rather than at fixed predetermined intervals. Ephemeris data can be downloaded to enable both Aided GPS and Assisted GPS. The device can download ephemeris data based on the frequency of requests into an API communicating with a GPS driver, based on the detection of a new network, or a change in time zone of the network time. Intelligent, adaptive downloading of ephemeris optimizes the usage of bandwidth and the data charge to the user while ensuring that ephemeris data is cached to provide assistance for location-based services such as turn-based navigation.
Abstract: An electronic mobile device that includes a controller including at least one processor, for controlling operation of the mobile device, a display coupled to the controller, and a navigational input mechanism coupled to the controller and responsive to user manipulation thereof. The controller, in one input mode, moves a selection marker on a user interface screen on the display in response to user manipulation of the navigational input mechanism, and in a second input mode, authenticates a user of the device in dependence on a sequence of input events resulting from user manipulation of the navigational input mechanism matching a predetermined passcode sequence.
Abstract: A sequence of screens are displayed for a wireless local area network (WLAN) connection setup application to enable a user of a handheld WLAN client device to scan for and set up a new WLAN connection. Various connection parameters may be saved in a profile. A profile management application lists profiles in decreasing order of priority.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use by a mobile communication device in facilitating voice calls through a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a wireless wide area network (WWAN) are disclosed. When switching communication operations from a WLAN coverage region of the WLAN to a WWAN coverage region of the WWAN, the mobile device causes a message for forwarding voice calls to a WWAN identification number of the mobile device to be transmitted through the WLAN. The mobile device subsequently causes a message for cancelling the forwarding of voice calls to a WLAN identification number of the mobile device to be transmitted through the WWAN. When switching communication operations from the WWAN coverage region of the WWAN to the WLAN coverage region of the WLAN, the mobile device causes a message for forwarding voice calls to the WLAN identification number of the mobile device to be transmitted through the WWAN.

Abstract: A wireless local area network (WLAN) client device determines the WLAN regulatory domain in which it is currently located by using information received via a non-WLAN wireless interface. Once the regulatory domain has been determined, a WLAN client device operating in the 2.4 GHz band, for example, an IEEE 802.11b/g client device, may actively scan on channels in the 2.4 GHz band where transmissions are permitted by the regulatory domain without first passively scanning on channels in the 2.4 GHz band.
Abstract: A method of controlling an electronic device includes retrieving from at least one database of the electronic device, calendared events that meet a set of constraints, displaying the calendared events in a time-ordered list including a start date/time of each of the calendared events, and providing a user-selectable option to either show end times or to hide the end times in the time-ordered list. The time-ordered list includes an end date/time of each of the calendared events when the user-selectable option is set to show end times.
Abstract: In one illustrative example, a method of providing mapping functionality in a contact list of a mobile communication device comprises the acts of providing a contact list organizer function in the mobile device for use in organizing a plurality of contacts of a contact book or list; identifying, through a user interface of the mobile device, a user input request to map a location of a selected one of the contacts of the contact list; and in response to the user input request, performing the following further acts of identifying an address of the location in one or more address fields of the selected contact; sending, to an address geocoding server via wireless network, a request for location coordinates with the address as an input; receiving, via the wireless network, latitude and longitude coordinates of the location in response to the request for the location coordinates; and causing a map corresponding to the location of the selected contact to be visually rendered in a display of the mobile device based

Abstract: A system and method for selectively securing data from unauthorized access on a client device storing a plurality of data types with reference to an authorization level indicated in a command. A command is received at a client device comprising an authorization level indicator. Based on at least one predefined rule, which may be implemented in an IT policy stored at the client device, each of the plurality of data types to be secured is determined, and then the data corresponding to those types is secured. The data may be secured by encrypting and/or deleting the data at the client device. The predefined rules associated with each authorization level may be configured by a user or administrator having an authorization level that exceeds the associated authorization level. The system and method thus provide a method for securing only selected data types, depending on the authorization level of the issuer of the command.
