  • Patent number: 7403188
Abstract: A handheld electronic device includes a reduced QWERTY keyboard and is enabled with disambiguation software. An enhanced word frequency learning feature is provided. The device provides output in the form of a default output and a number of variants. The output is based largely upon the frequency, i.e., the likelihood that a user intended a particular output, but various features of the device provide additional variants that are not based solely on frequency and rather are provided by various logic structures resident on the device. The device enables editing during text entry and also provides a learning function that allows the disambiguation function to adapt to provide a customized experience for the user. The disambiguation function can be selectively disabled and an alternate keystroke interpretation system provided.

  • Patent number: 7404152
Abstract: A method of displaying messages on handheld devices. The device displays messages in a scrollable viewport of vertically arranged fields. Date separators inserted into the vertically arranged list of messages to enable the user to associate the messages with a date. The date separators have “sticky” operation, meaning that the device ensures a date separator always appears within the viewport, even when the viewport has been scrolled to the middle of a long list of messages all associated with the same date. The device may ensure that the top field of the viewport always contains a date separator associated with the message immediately below.

  • Publication number: 20080171578
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in transferring user data from a first (“source”) mobile communication device to a second (“target”) mobile communication device using a removable memory card are disclosed. The source and target devices may be possessed and/or owned by the same end user. The source device is initially enabled to maintain data synchronization with a host server over a wireless communication network via a first wireless transceiver (e.g. a cellular transceiver) for user data of an application program (e.g. an e-mail application program) associated with the user account. To enable the target device for the communications associated with the user account, the source device is operative to establish a programming session with the target device via a second wireless transceiver (e.g. a short-range wireless transceiver). During the programming session, the source device causes user account data (e.g.

  • Publication number: 20080171543
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for determining whether to accept as valid a data segment, such as a radio block communicated pursuant to an EDGE communication session. A bit error rate measurer measures the bit error rate of a header part of a received radio block. The measured bit error rate is compared against a selected threshold. Results of the comparison are determinative of whether the radio block is accepted as valid or rejected as corrupted.

  • Patent number: 7400300
Abstract: A multiple-element antenna for a wireless communication device is provided. The antenna comprises a first antenna element having a first operating frequency band and a floating antenna element positioned adjacent the first antenna element to electromagnetically couple to the first antenna element. The floating antenna element is configured to operate in conjunction with the first antenna element within a second operating frequency band. A feeding port connected to the first antenna element connects the first antenna element to communications circuitry and exchanges communication signals in both the first operating frequency band and the second operating frequency band between the multiple-element antenna and the communications circuitry. In a wireless mobile communication device having a transceiver and a receiver, the feeding port is connected to both the transceiver and the receiver.

  • Patent number: 7400602
Abstract: A system and method of packet zone hysteresis for a mobile station is presented. When a short data burst is to be sent on the control channel, a check is made to see if packet zone hysteresis might have caused the PCF-PSDN interface to be torn down, and if necessary, this interface is re-established by performing a packet data service reconnect to thereby enable transmission of the short data burst.

  • Publication number: 20080165259
Abstract: A mobile device with an integrated camera responsive to signals from a camera activator. The mobile device includes application programs capable of editing documents. The user triggers the device operating system to switch from an active application program in which the user is editing a document to a camera application by activating the camera activator. The user then captures an image by again triggering the camera activator, whereupon the active application is restored and the image data is inserted within the document. The captured image is directly inserted into an input field within the open document in the active application.

  • Patent number: 7398079
Abstract: In one illustrative example, a mobile station includes a wireless transceiver which operates with a wireless communication network; a processor; memory coupled to the processor; and a user interface which includes a Push-To-Talk (PTT) switch for transmitting a PTT voice communication through the wireless transceiver, a PTT replay switch for replaying a PTT voice communication previously received through the wireless transceiver which is stored in the memory, and a speaker for outputting audible voice signals. The wireless transceiver is operative to receive a PTT key message; receive voice data of a PTT voice communication following the PTT key message; and receive a PTT dekey message following the voice data. The processor is operative to cause the voice data of the PTT voice communication to be recorded in the memory based on receiving the PTT key message, and cause the recording of voice data of the PTT voice communication to be terminated based on receiving the PTT dekey message.
