Abstract: An image is saved to a contact record or set as a home screen directly from a camera application of a portable electronic device. The method includes: capturing an image using a camera that is integrated into the portable electronic device, selecting at least a portion of the image, selecting a contact record from an address book application or selecting a set as home screen option.

Abstract: A handheld communication device and method for affecting movement of a highlighting cursor amongst an array of icons on a display screen is described. In an embodiment, the handheld communication device includes a lighted display, a keyboard and an auxiliary user input, e.g. a trackball, located essentially between the display and keyboard. The auxiliary user input is used to move the highlighting cursor from a first icon located on the display screen, to a second icon located on the display screen. In operation, the highlighting cursor is prevented from moving from a first row of icons to a successive second row of icons when a cross-wise directed force is applied to the auxiliary user input and the highlighted cursor has reached a terminal icon of the first row.

Abstract: A system and method is disclosed that provides for the displaying, on display screen of an electronic device, a list of contact names, and further provides for the designating, by sequentially scrolling through the list of contact names, individual contact names in the list of contact names and wherein designation of an individual contact name reveals available information about the contact.

Abstract: A method for synchronizing a database at a portable electronic device with a backup database including backup data records includes receiving information representative of data records of the database at the portable electronic device, determining if the database at the portable electronic device is to be updated with the backup data records, and if the database at the portable electronic device is to be updated, transmitting representative viewable or audible samples of ones of the backup data records.

Abstract: A handheld communication device and method for affecting movement of a highlighting cursor amongst a lighted display capable of displaying a webpage is described. The webpage has a native form including a number of user-actuable links related in series. The webpage displayable on the handheld communication device is modified from its native form so as to be displayed on the lighted display. The modified webpage retains the series relationship between the user-actuable links. A non-directionally limited auxiliary user input is located essentially between the lighted display and the keyboard and is capable of affecting non-serial movement of the highlighting cursor amongst the user-actuable links.

Abstract: A system and method is disclosed that provides for running an application on a handheld electronic device and thereby causing an application page to be displayed on a display screen of the handheld electronic device. The system and method further provides for displaying a menu of user-selectable actions relevant to the displayed page and default-designating a safe action for user selection so that in the event that the user inadvertently actuates the safe action, detrimental affects are minimized.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling display of data on a screen of a portable electronic device. The method includes launching an application that includes at least one field for receiving data and at least one field label for identifying the at least one field, entering data into the at least one field and removing the at least one field label from the screen when data is entered into the at least one field.

Abstract: A system and method is disclosed that provides for displaying, on a display screen of a handheld electronic device, a listing of user-selectable events comprising dates produced by a calendar program and further provides for selecting one of the user-selectable events using an auxiliary user input device and thereby causing a partially pre-filled appointment record to be displayed on the display screen. The displayed appointment record is to be associated with the selected event and pre-filled with a time frame defined by at least one of an appointment start time and an appointment ending time.

Abstract: A method of storing data from a network address in a database of a portable electronic device. The method includes obtaining at the portable electronic device, a data record from the network address, storing the data record along with a network address identifier, and transmitting the network address identifier to a backup device for retrieval and storage of the data record from the network.

Abstract: A host server is operative to control the pushing of user data messages to a plurality of mobile communication devices adapted to communicate in a wireless communication network. In particular, the host server is adapted to cause, for each one of the mobile communication devices operating in the wireless communication network, user data messages to be pushed to a mobile communication device via a packet data connection; receive, from a serving node in the wireless communication network, an IP notification message having an IP destination address of the host server and including an identification or address that identifies one of the mobile communication devices, the IP notification message being produced in response to a termination of packet data connectivity for the identified mobile communication device; and in response to receiving the IP notification message, at least temporarily refrain from pushing user data messages to the identified mobile communication device.

Abstract: A method of memory management in an electronic device, includes receiving at the electronic device, representative viewable or audible samples of data records, and storing the representative viewable or audible samples of data records in a memory of the electronic device. Each of the representative viewable or audible samples of data records includes one of a compressed version of a corresponding one of the backup data records, and a viewable or audible portion of the corresponding one of the backup data records.

Abstract: A cellular communications system may include a plurality of mobile cellular communications devices each associated with a respective user, and at least one cellular base station for wirelessly communicating with the mobile cellular communications devices. The at least one cellular base station may have a capacity associated therewith. The system may also include a central station for determining available capacity of the at least one cellular base station based upon active wireless communications with the mobile cellular communications devices. Moreover, the system may also include a subscription server for cooperating with the central station to provide non-real time subscription data to users on respective mobile cellular communications devices via the at least one cellular base station when the determined available capacity thereof is greater than a threshold.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for the communication of cellular network information between a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a mobile station are disclosed. In one illustrative example, the mobile station receives a generic container message from the WLAN in an extensible authentication procedure (EAP). The generic container message includes cellular network information associated with one or more available cellular networks previously received by the WLAN. The generic container message is not technology or standard-specific and therefore it may contain cellular network information from a variety of different cellular networks (e.g. 3GPP, 3GPP2, IETF, etc.). The mobile station decodes the generic container message to identify and store the cellular network information in its memory. Preferably, the cellular network information includes information for identifying the cellular networks so that the mobile station may appropriately select one of the cellular networks for communication.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for enhancing the probability of a successful emergency call completion and emergency callback on a mobile station in a network, the method comprising the steps of: during an emergency call attempt, monitoring whether the mobile station has received a non-voice service request from the network and, if yes, ignoring the non-voice service request. Further, during a callback period, monitoring whether the mobile station has received a service request from the network and, if yes, ignoring the service request if the service request is a non-voice service request that is anything but a position location service request. Further, during a callback period, monitoring whether a user attempts to initiate a non-voice service request that is anything but a position location service request, and if yes ignoring the non-voice service request.

Abstract: A wireless mobile device or other communications device has a memory and processor for executing an e-mail application that enables a user to store personal information about the user's contacts, including time-zone differential and/or current local time for each of the contacts. When the user seeks to communicate with a contact (e.g. via e-mail, IM or autodial), or if the user seeks to schedule a meeting or event with one or more contacts, the application will alert the user if the current local time is inappropriate for the contact. The application can also determine the location of the contact in order to update the current local time associated with that contact. The application therefore enables the user of an e-mail application to intelligently communicate or schedule meetings with contacts who are located in different time-zones and may also be traveling.

Abstract: An e-mail distribution server may manage many pull e-mail accounts by periodically, as defined by an interval time, polling associated pull e-mail servers for new mail. If the e-mail distribution server receives an e-mail message destined for a recipient having a pull e-mail account managed by the e-mail distribution server, the e-mail distribution server may recognize an opportunity to poll the pull e-mail server associated with the pull e-mail account sooner than the expiration of the interval time.

Abstract: Various embodiments are described for data communication between a host device and a mobile communication device having two processors. In a first mode of operation, data communication occurs between the host device and a main processor of the mobile device. In a second mode of operation, data communication occurs between the host device and a communications processor of the mobile device. Some of the embodiments also implement power transfer from the host device to the mobile device.

Abstract: A computer network which includes a wireless local area network; (WLAN) has at least first and second subnet segments and a router coupled between the first and the second subnet segments. The first subnet segment has a first IP subnet address range and the second subnet segment has a second IP subnet address range different, from the first IP subnet address range. At least a first wireless access point of the WLAN in the first subnet segment has both a local extended service set identifier (ESSID) and a global ESSID for mobile communication devices to associate with it. Similarly, at least a second wireless access point of the WLAN in the second subnet segment has both a local ESSID and the global ESSID for mobile communication devices to associate with it. The global ESSID is used for accessing a global virtual local area network (VLAN) which spans the entire network including the first and the second subnet segments.

Abstract: A method and system of reachability indication between a wireless device and at least one push server, the method comprising the steps of: sending device status information from the wireless device to the at least one push server; and receiving the status information at the at least one push server; wherein the at least one push server is enabled to selectively start and stop serving the wireless device on the basis of the status information. The method further comprises sending status information to a packet data serving node that stores a list of push servers associated with a wireless device, and having the packet data serving node forward the status information to the push server. The system and method further includes selectively starting and stopping the serving of the wireless device by the push server during a voice call.
