The case comprises a shell having front and back sides wherein the front side is configured to receive and retain the tablet device while providing user access to the touchscreen and user access to one or more of the control buttons, said shell including a back wall that is configured to cover at least a portion of the back face of the tablet. The protective case further includes a front cover that includes a tray, a wireless keyboard and keyboard housing. The tray includes opposing side rails and the keyboard housing includes opposing grooves on opposing side walls that are concealed and configured to engage the rails to allow the keyboard housing to slide in and out from the tray in a defined manner. The multi-layered construction includes two layers co-molded to one another and produces a lightweight and low-profile case providing a high level of impact protection. The first layer generally forms the internal rigid shell of the case, and the second layer forms the external soft shell of the case which may include a perforated pattern of holes. The first layer is comprised of material that has a hardness greater than the second layer. The layers are configured to interact with one another so that they are capable of distributing and absorbing impact forces to mitigate damage to the mobile device. The first layer includes apertures in which the second layer forms buttons corresponding to mobile device user controls. The second layer also bonds through attachment openings at the corners of the first layer.

A software application residing on the mobile can facilitate wireless operation of the mobile device features by the additional user interface on the case. Wireless user control via the alternative user interface controls on the case, for example, may be of one or more of the operations of a camera feature of the mobile device or may be any other operation of the mobile device. The protective case can be formed of multiple components that are user separable from another to allow for modular and independent functionality.

The case includes a rotatable magnetic clasp that rotates to magnetically secure the case in desired configuration. The magnetic clasp includes a rotatable magnet component attached to one end region of the case and a fixedly positioned and oriented magnet secured to another opposing end region of the case. The rotation of the magnet allows the user to re-orient the polarity of the magnetic component to facilitate mechanical and magnetic retention of the desired configuration.

In operation, the latch hooks and retains one end section of the front cover to maintain the device in an angled use position when open. A child-proof locking mechanism is provided to secure and lock the home button in the closed position.
