  • Patent number: 9200959
Abstract: Disclosed herein are a system and corresponding method for sensing terahertz radiation. The system collects terahertz radiation scattered from a target and upconverts the collected radiation to optical frequencies. A frequency-domain spectrometer senses spectral components of the upconverted signal in parallel to produce a spectroscopic measurement of the entire band of interest in a single shot. Because the sensing system can do single-shot measurements, it can sense moving targets, unlike sensing systems that use serial detection, which can only be used to sense stationary objects. As a result, the sensing systems and methods disclosed herein may be used for real-time imaging, including detection of concealed weapons, medical imaging, and hyperspectral imaging.

  • Patent number: 9203210
Abstract: When an excitation light is entered in a laser medium including a doped (containing rare earth element) YAG, the vicinity of the excitation light entry face is locally heated which generates a birefringence, causing degradation of linear polarization of emitted laser. To avoid such a phenomenon, it was necessary to make the excitation light pulsed and slow down the repetition rate of the pulse. In this device, an undoped YAG is bonded to a excitation light entry face of the laser medium made of a doped YAG. By arranging the YAG <100> axis so as to extend along the optical axis of the laser oscillation system, a linearly polarized pulse laser can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 9199923
Abstract: In recognition of the need to develop novel therapeutic agents, the present invention provides novel histone deacetylase inhibitors. These compounds include an ester bond making them sensitive to deactivation by esterases. Therefore, these compounds are particularly useful in the treatment of skin disorders. When the compounds reaches the bloodstream, an esterase or an enzyme with esterase activity cleaves the compound into biologically inactive fragments or fragments with greatly reduced activity Ideally these degradation products exhibit a short serum and/or systemic half-life and are eliminated rapidly. These compounds and pharmaceutical compositions thereof are particularly useful in treating cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, neurofibromatosis, psoriasis, hair loss, skin pigmentation, and dermatitis, for example. The present invention also provides methods for preparing compounds of the invention and intermediates thereto.

  • Patent number: 9201957
Abstract: The invention relates to processing of data during semantic analysis of text data and building of document semantic models. The method consists of two main steps. In step one, an ontology is extracted from external information sources that contain descriptions of particular domain objects. In step two, the text information in the document is linked to ontology concepts and a document semantic model is built. Electronic resources that may or may not be connected through a hyperlink structure are used as information sources. The technical result is achieved, in particular, by identifying all terms in the document and linking them to ontology concepts, so that each term correlates to one concept (its meaning), and then ranking term meanings by importance to the document.

  • Patent number: 9202141
Abstract: A method is provided that creates a lecture video capsule containing highlights of an original instructional video based on visual quality and content. The method includes segmenting and recognizing activities in the instructional video using a hidden Markov model (HMM). The activities are classified into three categories: talking head, writing hand and slideshow. The talking head frames are classified as non-content frames, while the writing hand and slideshows are classified as content frames. A non-reference based objective quality assessment of the non-content frames may be performed to detect high quality frames. Statistical parameters of an intensity histogram and a horizontal projection profile (HPP) of the content frames may be used to derive an objective quality measure of the content frames that is used to extract high quality content frames. The selected high quality non-content and content frames form a video clip or capsule, which is a temporally compressed representation of the video.
