    Abstract: Actively dividing tumors appear to progress to a life threatening condition more rapidly than slowly dividing tumors. Assessing actively dividing tumors currently involves a manual assessment of the number of mitotic cells in a histological slide prepared from the tumor and assessed by a trained pathologist. Disclosed is a method for using cumulative information from a series of expressed genes to determine tumor prognosis. This cumulative information can be used to categorize tumor samples into high mitotic states or low mitotic states using a mathematical algorithm and gene expression data derived from microarrays or quantitative-Polymerase Chain Reaction (Q-PCR) data. The specific mathematical description outlines how the algorithm assesses the most informative subset of genes from the full list of genes during the assessment of each sample.

    Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a metamaterial for diverging an electromagnetic wave, which comprises at least one metamaterial sheet layer. Refractive indices of the metamaterial sheet layer are distributed in a circular form with a center of the metamaterial sheet layer, and the refractive indices remain unchanged at a same radius and increase gradually with the radius. The present disclosure changes electromagnetic parameters at each point of the metamaterial through punching or by attaching man-made microstructures so that the electromagnetic wave can be diverged after passing through the metamaterial. The metamaterial of the present disclosure features a simple manufacturing process and a low cost, and is easy to be implemented. Moreover, the metamaterial of the present disclosure has small dimensions and does not occupy a large space, so it is easy to miniaturize apparatuses made of the metamaterial of the present disclosure.

    Abstract: Ultrasonic signals are used to transmit sounds from a modulated ultrasonic generator to other locations from which the sounds appear to emanate. In particular, an ultrasonic carrier is modulated with an audio signal and demodulated on passage through the atmosphere. The carrier frequencies are substantially higher than those of prior systems, e.g., at least 60 kHz, and the modulation products thus have frequencies which are well above the audible range of humans; as a result, these signals are likely harmless to individuals who are within the ultrasonic fields of the system. The signals may be steered to moving locations, and various measures are taken to minimize distortion and maximize efficiency.
