  • Patent number: 8740819
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and corresponding method to capture individual representational motions made by a person while performing a neuropsychological test. A user of the apparatus and method may be allowed to view, edit, classify, and retrieve any captured and recorded motions made by the person. In one embodiment, a capture unit, such as a digitizer, captures the motions made by a person while performing a Clock Drawing Test, and the captured data may then be reported in a myriad of ways. The apparatus and method also provide a means to standardize administration and scoring of writing utensil and paper based neuropsychological testing administered to a person or control and test groups for domestic or international applications. By analyzing individual representational motions made by a person while performing a neuropsychological test, unexpectedly more information may be gleaned from the test than was available to physicians from only a completed drawing.

  • Patent number: 8741616
Abstract: Cytochrome P450 BM-3 from Bacillus megaterium was engineered using a combination of directed evolution and site-directed mutagenesis to hydroxylate linear alkanes regio- and enantioselectively using atmospheric dioxygen as an oxidant. Mutant 9-10A-A328V hydroxylates octane primarily at the 2-positio to form S-2-octanol (40% ee). Another mutant, 1-12G, hydroxylates alkanes larger than hexane primarily at the 2-position, but forms R-2-alcohols (40-55% ee). These biocatalysts are highly active for alkane substrates and support thousands of product turnovers. These regio- and enantio-selectivities are retained in whole-cell biotransformations with E. coli, where the engineered P450s can be expressed at high levels and the expensive cofactor is supplied endogenously.

  • Patent number: 8741575
Abstract: The present invention relates to biomarkers for neoplasias such as high grade gliomas. The inventors have discovered that the overexpression of senescence associated genes (SAG) is associated with a poor prognosis in subjects with high grade gliomas. The present invention provides SAG biomarkers for predicting response to therapy for subjects having high grade glioma based on dividing the samples into high and low risk groups; diagnosing high grade glioma; monitoring progression of high grade glioma from one biological state to another; and determining efficacy of treatment for high grade gliomas.

  • Patent number: 8742092
Abstract: The present invention relates to a Drosophila in vitro system which was used to demonstrate that dsRNA is processed to RNA segments 21-23 nucleotides (nt) in length. Furthermore, when these 21-23 nt fragments are purified and added back to Drosophila extracts, they mediate RNA interference in the absence of long dsRNA. Thus, these 21-23 nt fragments are the sequence-specific mediators of RNA degradation. A molecular signal, which may be their specific length, must be present in these 21-23 nt fragments to recruit cellular factors involved in RNAi. This present invention encompasses these 21-23 nt fragments and their use for specifically inactivating gene function. The use of these fragments (or chemically synthesized oligonucleotides of the same or similar nature) enables the targeting of specific mRNAs for degradation in mammalian cells, where the use of long dsRNAs to elicit RNAi is usually not practical, presumably because of the deleterious effects of the interferon response.

  • Patent number: 8742989
Abstract: Systems and methods for constructing integrated three dimensional electromagnetic element arrays using a bulk resonator are illustrated. In several embodiments, the integrated three dimensional electromagnetic element arrays include electromagnetic elements buried within the bulk resonator. In many embodiments, inclusion of a third dimension in the electromagnetic element array can alleviate or eliminate the trade-offs that are experienced in conventional integrated antennas by using the third physical dimension to provide an additional degree of freedom to manipulate electromagnetic boundary conditions in the near-field of the substrate, affecting both the resulting electromagnetic near- and far-fields. In several embodiments, three dimensional electromagnetic element arrays are formed by mechanically stacking substrates on which integrated planar circuits are formed (i.e. chips) using conventional die stacking techniques.

  • Patent number: 8742334
Abstract: A spinning cell device is described for fast and convenient standardization and analysis of constituents and isotopes in solid samples by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma (LA-ICP) spectrometry. The method and apparatus for performing the method require the sample under test and a standard to be spun during ablation allowing the quasi-simultaneous ablation of both materials. The aerosols resulting from the ablation of sample and standard are mixed in the ablation cell allowing quantification of the ablated metals by the method of standard addition or isotope dilution. The relative proportion of standard verses sample ablated can be changed by altering the trajectory of the laser beam. The ablated aerosol is swept into an inductively coupled plasma by a carrier gas and analyzed by mass spectrometry.
