Abstract: A herpesvirus vaccine comprising a mutated herpesvirus suspended in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The mutated herpesvirus is capable of infecting cells of the mammal to be vaccinated, but incapable of completing a replicative cycle, and it is capable of eliciting a protective immune response in that mammal. The mutated herpesvirus is also capable of treating immunomodulatory or immunoregulatory diseases. The mutation occurs in at least one gene encoding a protein essential for replication of the virus, so that the mutation renders the virus replication defective.

Abstract: Disclosed in the present invention is a Zymomonas integrant and derivatives of these integrants that posses the ability to ferment pentose into ethanol. The genetic sequences encoding for the pentose-fermenting enzymes are integrated into the Zymomonas in a two-integration event of homologous recombination and transposition. Each operon includes more than one pentose-reducing enzyme encoding sequence. The integrant in some embodiments includes enzyme sequences encoding xylose isomerase, xylulokinase, transketolase and transketolase. The Zymomonas integrants are highly stable, and retain activity for producing the pentose-fermenting enzyme for between 80 to 160 generations. The integrants are also resistant to acetate inhibition, as the integrants demonstrate efficient ethanol production even in the presence of 8 up to 16 grams acetate per liter media.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process for dissociating Fc-containing molecules from complexes of Protein A/Fc-containing molecules or mixtures containing Fc-containing molecules and Protein A. The association, e.g., by hydrophobic interactions, between the Fc-containing molecules and Protein A can be reduced or inhibited by raising the pH of dissociation. The pH of dissociation can be raised by addition of agents capable of inhibiting hydrophobic interactions, including buffers containing arginine and/or ethylene glycol, to the mixture, either prior to adding the mixture to the column chromatography substrate, after adding the mixture to the column chromatography substrate, or both prior to and after adding the mixture to the column chromatography substrate.

Abstract: A procedure for diagnosing cochlear hydrops is based, in part, on an analysis of the patient's auditory brainstem response (ABR) to stimuli. The patient's ABR to a broadband click stimulus is recorded. A plurality of masked ABR's are also recorded, wherein the stimulus is masked by high-pass noise with a plurality of high-pass cut-off frequencies. The latency difference between the wave V component in the unmasked click alone response and the undermasked wave V component of a low cut-off frequency high-pass response is then calculated. If an undermasked component is not present, the normal wave V component is used. The measured latency difference is combined with another measure, such as the wave V amplitude ratio. A distribution of the combined measure is then plotted for the population and a threshold established for diagnosing cochlear hydrops. Alternatively, the joint distribution of the individual measures may be used in situations where the individual measures are known to be independent.
Abstract: A method of fabricating a thermal conductive plug of a ceramic substrate of a multi-chip package. A plurality of conductive openings and thermal conductive openings are formed on green tapes. A metal paste is filled into the conductive openings and the thermal conductive openings. The green tapes are stacked together so that the metal paste inside the conductive openings and the thermal conductive openings of every green tape is in contact respectively with its neighboring metal paste within the conductive openings and thermal conductive openings of the green tapes. Cofire those green tapes and the metal paste to form a pre-substrate. The pre-substrate comprises an insulating structure, a plurality of thermal conductive plugs and conductive plugs.

Abstract: An enzyme having an activity of transferring N-acetylglucosamine to the non-reducing end of a Gal?1-4Glc or Gal?1-4GlcNAc-group via a ?-1,3 bond; a nucleic acid encoding the same; and a method of diagnosing cancer and/or tumor, in particular, digestive cancer and/or tumor using the expression dose of a gene of the above enzyme as an indication. A gene of a novel enzyme having an activity of transferring N-acetylglucosamine to the non-reducing end of a Gal ?1-4Glc or Gal ?1-4GlcNAc-group via a ?-1,3 bond is cloned from human stomach cells and its base sequence is determined. Then this enzyme is expressed. Since this enzyme is scarcely or never produced in cancer and/or tumor, in particular, digestive cancer and/or tumor cells, cancer and/or tumor can be diagnosed with the use of the expression of the enzyme gene as an indication.

Abstract: A zoom lens formed in a small size adaptable to a thin and portable device, having three lens groups, including, from the object plane to the image forming plane: a first lens group with a negative power, a second lens group with a positive power and a third lens group with a positive power. By controlling the ratio of the focal length of the second lens group and the focal length of the tele-photo end, image distortion may be controlled, and the total length of the lens may be reduced to shrink the size of the lens. Hence production costs may be reduced, which is important to mass production.
