Abstract: A highly pure hexagonal boron nitride single crystal not influenced by impurities and capable of high-luminance short wave ultraviolet light emission reflecting inherent characteristics is provided; a high-luminance ultraviolet light emitting element is provided by using the above single crystal; and utilizing the above element, a simple compact low-cost long-lived far ultraviolet solid-state laser and far ultraviolet solid-state light emitting apparatus are provided. A highly pure hexagonal boron nitride single crystal having a single light emission peak in the far ultraviolet region of up to a wavelength of 235 nm is produced by melting said boron nitride crystal as raw material in the presence of a highly pure solvent under high-temperature and high-pressure, followed by crystallization. A light emitting element or a light emitting layer comprised of the obtained crystal is excited with electron beams, and the thus generated far ultraviolet light resonated or without resonation is taken out.

Abstract: The invention provides the genomic sequence of GSSP-2, GSSP-2 cDNAs and GSSP-2 polypeptdes. Further the invention provides polynucleotides including biallelic markers derived from the GSSP-2 gene and from genomic regions flanking the gene. This invention also provides polynucleotides and methods suitable for genotyping a nucleic acid molecule containing sample for one or more biallelic markers of the invention. Further, the invention provides methods to detect a statistical correlation between a biallelic marker allele and a phenotype and/or between a biallelic marker haplotype and a phenotype. The invention also concerns methods and compositions for killing neoplastic cells or inhibiting neoplastic cell growth. In particular, the present invention concerns cell proliferation arresting/inhibiting and apoptosis/necrosis inducing compositions and methods for the treatment of tumors. The present invention is directed to novel polypeptides and to nucleic acid molecules encoding those polypeptides.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for illuminating a subject with deep UV light and detecting 2-dimensional image information, e.g., a transmission image, fluorescence image, reflected light image, etc. The subject may be illuminated with a light pulse having a duration of 2 seconds or less and one or more components with a wavelength of between about 150 nm to about 300 nm. The light pulse may be arranged so as to minimize or eliminate any detrimental effect on the functioning of the subject, e.g., on a living cell. A concentration, mass, quantum yield, absorbance or other characteristics of one or more compounds in the subject may be determined based on one or more 2-dimensional images obtained of the subject. Abstract: The RecQ4 helicase gene, belonging to the RecQ helicase gene family, is revealed herein to be the causative gene of Rothmund-Thomson syndrome. The present inventors found out that it is possible to diagnose Rothmund-Thomson syndrome by detecting mutation of this gene. Further, they uncovered that it is possible to treat patients of Rothmund-Thomson syndrome by utilizing normal RecQ4 helicase gene or proteins thereof.
Abstract: Monolithic, tandem, photonic cells include at least a first semiconductor layer and a second semiconductor layer, wherein each semiconductor layer includes an n-type region, a p-type region, and a given band-gap energy. Formed within each semiconductor layer is a sting of electrically connected photonic sub-cells. By carefully selecting the numbers of photonic sub-cells in the first and second layer photonic sub-cell string(s), and by carefully selecting the manner in which the sub-cells in a first and second layer photonic sub-cell string(s) are electrically connected, each of the first and second layer sub-cell strings may be made to achieve one or more substantially identical electrical characteristics.
Abstract: A device and method for ferrofluid power generator and cooling system, wherein the waste heat of electronic device is used as a heat source to vaporize fluid and form bubbles as a forwarding pump of the ferrofluid. The fluid with magnetic nano particles is pumped forward and rotated by a fluid mechanism, then passes through a high density coil to result in the time varying magnetic flux and induced current. No additional heat-dissipating device is needed for this invention to dispose the waste heat, which requires the waste heat to produce electricity, which provides cooling and saves power.

Abstract: A DNA vaccine effective for inhibiting endothelial cell proliferation comprises a DNA construct operably encoding a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor protein. This invention provides DNA vaccines that encode VEGF receptor-2 (KDR, SEQ ID NO: 2), VEGF receptor-1 (Flt-1, (SEQ ID NO: 4), or Flk-1 (the murine homolog of KDR, SEQ ID NO: 6), DNA sequences SEQ ID NOS: 1, 3, and 5 respectively, as well as methods of using such a DNA vaccine to inhibit vascular endothelial cell proliferation in the tumor micro-environment. Anti-angiogenesis and subsequent decrease in tumor growth and dissemination is achieved.

Abstract: A reconfigurable radio processor comprises a task interface and an execution kernel. The processor can be applied to a platform comprising a main processor and on-chip bus, and uses a task-based interface between the main processor and the radio processor. The radio processor simplifies the designs for control system, instruction set and data path. The bus interface includes a task dispatcher. The execution kernel comprises a global control unit, at least one function unit, an operation network, and a data network. The radio processor meets the reconfigurable and scalable requirements. It allows system designers to realize many applications on an IC chip, as well as increases the add-on values for the product. It provides system designers with the possibility of replacing another main processor under a special consideration.

Abstract: A method for producing quantum dots. The method includes cleaning an oxide substrate and separately cleaning a metal source. The substrate is then heated and exposed to the source in an oxygen environment. This causes metal oxide quantum dots to form on the surface of the substrate.

Abstract: An envelope detector system is disclosed for detecting an envelope in a system input signal. Abstract: The present invention provides a method for forming an optical waveguide characterized by applying a paste containing a copper compound to a glass substrate containing an alkali metal as a glass component over the whole surface thereof or in a patterned form, and performing heat treatment at a temperature lower than the softening temperature of the glass substrate. The method of the invention can produce an optical waveguide without the need for a high vacuum as in the thin film deposition method and without the use of a molten salt, and is capable of dispersing Cu+ ions selectively in a glass substrate with excellent controllability.

Abstract: A microsensor for sensing a substance comprises a substrate, a source of light, an optical microresonator or semiconductor optical ring microresonator fabricated in the substrate exposed to the substance to allow an interaction between the microresonator and substance, a waveguide coupling the source of light to the optical microresonator, and a detector coupled to the microresonator to measure the resonant frequency of the microresonator, the absorption loss of whispering gallery modes in the microresonator or the quality factor of the microresonator, which are sensitive to interaction of the substance with the optical microresonator. A polymer coating disposed on the microresonator is reactive with the substance. The microsensor may comprise a plurality of microresonators corresponding to a plurality of different resonant frequencies to generate an absorption spectrum of the substance.
Abstract: A spirometer for measuring fluid flow, particularly associated with exhalation of respiratory patients. The spirometer of this invention preferably has a fluidic oscillator wherein the fluid oscillates within a chamber of the fluidic oscillator. An oscillation frequency of the fluid flow within the chamber is correlated to a flow rate. A computer is used to process input data, such as data representing frequency of the oscillatory flow within the chamber, to a flow rate passing through the spirometer. The spirometer of this invention may have no moving parts, which results in the need for only a design calibration and no periodic calibrations throughout use of the spirometer.

Abstract: A biodegradable common bile duct stent and the method for preparing thereof are provided. The stent is made of biodegradable polymeric material with incorporation of X-ray opaque components. The stent adapts to the anatomical shape of the CBD or it can be sutured together with the wall of the bile duct. After placing the stent in the duct, it maintains its position and does not slip. The circular tube of the stent being suitably sized and having multiple ring-shaped protruding rims at the outer wall and/or with larynx structure, leakage and outflow of the bile are thereby prevented. It can be manufactured by a conventional injection-molding or an extrusion-blowing technique. In surgical operation on the bile duct, the stent can replace the T-tube which is conventionally used to support the duct and guide bile drainage.
