  • Patent number: 5355593
Abstract: A device for transferring a paper web from the press section into the dry end of a paper making machine. The web contacts a rotatable press surface, e.g. on a press roll, and travels with the press surface through a press nip against a backing roll, and thereafter travels with the press surface to a web removal place. The web is transferred by a suction device across an adjustable gap to a porous transport belt which transports the web toward a first dryer group. The first dryer group has a number of drying cylinders and a web support belt that transfers the web from drying cylinder to drying cylinder. Either a suction device or another intermediate transfer roll transfers the web from the transport belt to the support belt for the dryer group.

  • Patent number: 5354188
Abstract: The invention relates to a sickleless internal gear pump with an internal ring gear and a pinion meshing with the ring gear. The ring gear and pinion are rotatably mounted in a common housing part having an axial expanse corresponding to the width of the teeth of the ring gear and the pinion. The housing features a suction port and a pressure port. The ring gear features radial ports for the fluid medium to be pumped. Disposed in the pressure side region of the housing, opposite the rotating gearing parts of the ring gear and the pinion, is an axially movable axial disk exerting a force on the rotating gearing parts dependent on an axial pressure derived from the working pressure. The axially movable disk provides axial sealing by compensating for the gap between it and the fixed housing.

  • Patent number: 5343801
Abstract: A multi-roll calender for treating a web material, of the type which develops a linear force, has at least two rolls stacked one above the other in a press plane. A lower roll is constituted as a sag-compensation roll. The other rolls in the calender stack are all equidistant relative to the sag-compensation roll, i.e., they are supported the same distance away from the two supports of the rolls. One of the outermost rolls (either the top or the bottom roll) is fixed in a stand while all the other rolls are movably mounted. The moveable rolls can be acted upon by support forces acting in the plane of the stack. The support forces and the internal pressure of the sag-compensation roll are adjustable via a control device, e.g., a computer, so that even when the rolls sag, the linear force distribution of the rolls is identical over their width.

  • Patent number: 5341579
Abstract: In a paper making machine a porous support belt travels together with the web over a drying cylinder and leaves the cylinder at a point of removal. A suction box provided in the region of the web removal has a suction zone which is defined by means of two yieldable sealing strips which extend transversely to the direction of travel of the web, and each is supported in a sealing strip holder. The distance between each sealing strip holder and the outer surface of the drying cylinder amounts to at least 30 mm, and each of the yieldable sealing strips has, in its normal condition of operation, such an inherent stiffness that the sealing strip remains substantially free of deformation in the event of a difference in pressure of 0.01 to 0.1 bar between the suction zone and its surroundings.

  • Patent number: 5340402
Abstract: A coating system for application of coating color on a paper web. A roll is wrapped by the paper web, and a nozzle feeds coating color to the paper web. The nozzle includes an overflow slat, a dosing slat, and an application zone. The application zone is preceded by a slat extending across the web width and forming with the paper web a gap space extending in the direction of web travel. The slat features an edge which is located at the entrance of the paper web to the gap space. The slat features an air guide surface which starts at the edge, scrapes off the air film clinging to the paper web and deflects it away from it. The slat further features an air guide channel starting at the gap space and ending in the area of the air guide surface.

  • Patent number: 5340611
Abstract: In a process for the coating of a running web of paper or cardboard, provisions are that in a press gap formed between two rolls a coating substance applied in a very small quantity on the surface of the one roll is first pressed on the web leaving a very thin coat on the web which, however, covers all spots including the "mounds" of microroughness. Next, the second coat can be applied and dosed on the still moist first coat with the usual means. In the process, the first coat is preferably dosed on the shell of the first roll, by means of the peripheral grooves of a rotary doctor. The same may be performed also as regards the second coating on the web.

  • Patent number: 5328072
Abstract: A device for continuously determining the position of the edge of a moving web uses a light signal from a light relay emitted in the direction of the edge of a web. The light signal is received and converted by the light relay into an input/output signal which is used as an indicator and as a control value for the position of the edge of the web. The signal outlet is moved together with the signal input preferably along a circular path which intersects the edge of the web twice so that the position of the edge of the web can be determined from the corresponding input/output signals obtained during each revolution.

  • Patent number: 5328511
Abstract: A device for applying coating composition to a fiber web has at least one application roll for receiving a film of coating color at a feed location and for then delivering it to the fiber web at a delivery location. A nozzle applicator feeds coating color to a nozzle at the feed position of application roll. The nozzle has a downstream lip with a metering doctor on it for metering the thickness of the coating color applied to the roll. The nozzle has an upstream lip in the form of an overflow ledge spaced from the surface of the application roll. Coating liquid overflows the overflow ledge and is collected in a first overflow trough. To clean the outer surface of the application roll before coating color is thereto applied, a scraper blade scrapes the surface of the roll. Upstream in the rotation path from the scraper blade is a sprayer for spraying liquid on the application roll so that the scraper scrapes the surface of the application roll with liquid on it.

  • Patent number: 5321899
Abstract: The dry end of a paper machine comprises a first dryer group with top drying cylinders (11 to 14), with a first drying wire (10) and with bottom deflection suction rolls (21 to 23). Adjacent this, there is a second dryer group with bottom drying cylinders (15 to 18), with a second drying screen (20) and with top deflection suction rolls (25 to 27). In this way, both sides of the web (9) to be dried come, in succession, into direct contact with the drying cylinders. At the place where the web (9) changes from the first drying wire to the second drying wire, there is a transfer suction roll (24) which lies within the loop (20) of the second support belt. The web (9) travels there from the last cylinder (14) of the first dryer group over an at least approximately straight travel path to the transfer suction roll (24) and thus onto the second support belt (20).
