  • Patent number: 9574880
Abstract: A ring laser gyroscope (RLG) includes moveable mirrors and a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) actuator coupled to the moveable mirrors to cause a respective displacement thereof that induces a phase modulation on counter-propagating light beams relative to one another. The induced phase modulation creates an optical path difference between the counter-propagating light beams corresponding to a virtual rotation that reduces the lock-in of the RLG.

  • Publication number: 20170047223
Abstract: Epitaxial growth of gallium arsenide (GaAs) on a semiconductor material (e.g., Si) using quasi-van der Waals Epitaxy (QvdWE). Prior to GaAs growth a buffer layer (e.g., graphene) is deposited which relieves lattice mismatch/thermal expansion. The low energy of the graphene surface and the GaAs/graphene interface is overcome through an optimized growth technique to obtain an atomically smooth low-temperature GaAs nucleation layer. The disclosure can be applied to optimize epitaxial thin film growth of other materials, (e.g., III-V semiconductors, such as InP, GaSb) on Si using van der Waals buffer layers such as graphene.

  • Patent number: 9568460
Abstract: A liquid phase microextraction (LPME) method was developed for the determination of sulfur compounds in crude oils and its fractions (e.g diesel). Wide ranges of sulfur compounds including benzothiophene, dibenzothiophene and their derivatives were used as model compounds for extraction. After extraction, the analyses were performed by gas chromatography equipped with sulfur chemiluminescence detector (GC-SCD). Various experiments conditions influencing the extraction such as extraction times, extraction solvents, solvent volume and quantitative parameters were optimized to achieve higher extraction efficiency and high accuracy. The optimized conditions were applied to the determination of sulfur compounds in crude oil and diesel.

  • Patent number: 9564335
Abstract: Methods for removing a material layer from a base substrate utilizing spalling in which mode III stress, i.e., the stress that is perpendicular to the fracture front created in the base substrate, during spalling is reduced. The substantial reduction of the mode III stress during spalling results in a spalling process in which the spalled material has less surface roughness at one of its' edges as compared to prior art spalling processes in which the mode III stress is present and competes with spalling.
