    Abstract: Disclosed herein are a benzyl ether compound represented by the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R represents a branched alkyl group of 4 to 8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group of 4 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms having an alicyclic group of 3 to 7 carbon atoms, an aralkyl group of 7 to 9 carbon atoms, an alkyl group of 2 to 4 carbon atoms having an alkoxy group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an unsaturated alkyl group of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, a straight-chain alkyl group of 2 to 8 carbon atoms which has been substituted by 1 to 15 fluorine atoms, or a branched alkyl group of 3 to 8 carbon atoms which has been substituted by 1 to 15 fluorine atoms, and X represents a nitro group or an amino group, provided that when X is a nitro group, R is neither an aralkyl group nor an ethyl group substituted by fluorine atom(s), a process for producing the same.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are a resin composition comprising 5 to 95% by weight of a vinylidene chloride resin and 5 to 95% by weight of a polyamide resin having a low crystalline melting point of not higher than 210.degree. C. and a molded product of said resin composition.The molded product of the present invention shows a molded product excellent in gas-barrier property and impact strength at low temperature, particularly a film, sheet or container.Among the resin compositions of the present invention, since the composition having 60 to 95% by weight of vinylidene chloride resin is particularly rich in gas-barrier property, it is suitable for packaging foods, and since the composition having more than 40% by weight and not more than 95% by weight of polyamide resin is excellent particularly in impact strength at low temperature, it is suitable as the packaging material for use at an extremely low temperature.

    Abstract: The present invention discloses a phosphate adsorbent comprising an MgO-TiO.sub.2 complex as an active ingredient and a phosphate adsorbent having said complex deposited on active carbons. In the preferred embodiments of the present invention, the MgO/TiO.sub.2 molar ratio in the complex is in the range of 99.99/0.01 to 80/20, the specific surface area of the adsorbent as measured by BET method is in the range of 50 to 700 m.sup.2 /g. and the absorbent shows a crystal diffraction pattern of MgO in powder X-ray diffractometry. The phosphate adsorbent according to the present invention is useful as an antihyperphosphoremial agent, an adsorbent for hemoperfusion and a therapeutical agent for renal diseases.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a process for producing a substantially quinoline-soluble and optically anisotropic pitch for carbon materials, which process comprises the steps of (1) polymerizing naphthalene by heating at a temperature of not higher than 330.degree. C. for 0.5 to 100 hours in the presence of Lewis acid catalyst, (2) removing said catalyst from the reaction mixture, (3) subjecting said reaction mixture to thermal treatment at a temperature of 390.degree. to 450.degree. C. for 1 to 5 hours under a pressure of not less than an atmospheric pressure so as to produce neither a quinoline-insoluble pitch nor optically anisotropic pitch, thereby carrying out aromatization of the polymerizate of naphthalene, and (4) heating the thus treated material at a temperature of 350.degree. to 380.degree. C. for 3 to 10 hours under a reduced pressure while flowing an inert gas, thereby removing the volatile components for said material, and the pitch produced by the process.

C.

The porous layer is either a uniformly porous, carbonaceous monolayer, or has a two-layer structure comprising a more porous layer, a less porous layer and elongated holes for feeding reactant gases provided between said more porous layer and said less porous layer, the less porous layer having a bulk density larger than that of the more porous layer. There are also provided according to the invention processes for preparing such an electrode substrate for fuel cells.
