  • Patent number: 8270565
Abstract: A dual energy inspection system that generates X-rays with an electron beam scanned over targets. A switchable voltage source that can be change its voltage output may cause X-rays to be generated at different energies. This X-ray generation subsystem is controlled by a sequencer that provides beam steering and shaping control inputs that may be dependent on the voltage provided by the voltage source. In another aspect, the dual energy inspection system may use multiple types of detectors, each sensitive to X-rays of a different energy. A relatively small number of detectors sensitive to one energy level is provided. Nonetheless, dual energy measurements may be made on objects within an item under inspection by identifying points that, for each object of interest, provide a low interference path to one of those detectors. Measurements made with radiation emanating from those points are used for dual energy analysis of those objects.

  • Patent number: 8270298
Abstract: A network includes a first node and a second node and data frames are transmitted from the first node to the second node. Each of the data frames carry information belonging to one of a plurality of data flows. A determining unit (911) determines at periodically repeated times, for each of the data flows, whether there are more data frames in the first node waiting to be transmitted. A capacity allocating unit (919) allocates for each of those data flows for which no data frames have been waiting to be transmitted for a predetermined time period, only a small amount of the totally available bitrate or bandwidth for transmission from the first node to the second node. It also allocates for each of the remaining data flows, for transmission from the first node to the second node, a share of the rest of the totally available bitrate or bandwidth, so that the sum of the shares for all said remaining data flows is equal to the rest.

  • Patent number: 8271858
Abstract: Techniques for generating soft values for parity bits in a convolutional decoding process are disclosed. An exemplary method comprises, for each of at least one iteration in at least one soft-input soft-output decoder, calculating intermediate probability values for each possible transition between a first plurality of candidate decoder states at a first time and a second plurality of candidate decoder states at a second time. Two or more partial sums are then computed from the intermediate probability values, wherein the partial sums correspond to possible combinations of two or more systematic bits, two or more parity bits, or at least one systematic bit and at least one parity bit. Soft values, such as log-likelihood values, are then estimated for each of at least one systematic bit and at least one parity bit of the received communications data corresponding to the interval between the first and second times, based on the partial sums.

  • Publication number: 20120233608
Abstract: A method and system for protecting against failure of hardware elements (HEs) in a virtual machine system using an information model with virtualization support. Based on the information model, the method boots virtual machine monitors (VMMs), virtual machines (VMs) and operating systems (OSes). The information model includes a graph of objects representing configured relationships between the hardware elements (HEs), VMMs, VMs, and OSes through parent child relationships between the graph's objects. The graph of objects includes: a domain object, HE objects, VMM objects, VM objects, and OS objects. The VM objects of a migration-enabled type represent those of the VMs that may migrate between the VMMs. Based on the runtime associations between the VMM objects and the VM objects of the migration-enabled type, the method identifies which of the migration-enabled VMs are hosted by a same HE and are therefore vulnerable to hardware failure of the same HE.

  • Publication number: 20120233240
Abstract: Presented is a system and methods for relocating a Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) association from a first back-end server to a second back-end server without disturbing the SCTP association connection. The front-end server coordinates the replacement by requesting SCTP association connection parameters from the first back-end server and providing the SCTP association connection parameters to the second back-end server. Further, the front-end server discards any SCTP association packets, not necessary to the replacement, directed to the two back-end servers during the replacement. Throughout the replacement, the client, on the non-relocating end of the SCTP association, is unaware of the replacement or the existence of the front-end server.
