The step of spreading the data symbols comprises allocating, for each stream, at least one channelisation code (62) to be applied for spreading the data symbols of the stream. The cooperating base station then selectively sends particular ones of the soft output values to a serving base station over a backhaul communication link based on whether or not the level of certainty indicated by each soft output value exceeds a certainty threshold.
