  • Patent number: 10428641
Abstract: In some embodiments, an apparatus and a system, as well as a method and article of manufacture, may operate to determine a value of strain, such as an equivalent plastic strain, in a perforated portion of a well by applying a set of draw-down pressures to the surface of at least one perforation tunnel in the perforated portion. The perforated portion, in turn, is modeled using stress components provided by a global field model that includes the location of the well, to set boundary conditions at the surface of the well. A well drilling process and a tunnel perforating process are modeled with element removal and pressure addition for the perforated portion. Additional activity may include operating a controlled device based on the value of strain that is determined. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 10428639
Abstract: Damage to a casing string in a wellbore resulting from a wellbore operation can be predicted. For example, a stiff string model can be used to determine a contact point between the casing string and a well tool positionable within the casing string for performing the wellbore operation. The stiff string model can be used to determine a force of the well tool against the casing string at the contact point. The force can be used to determine a volume of damage to the casing string proximate to the contact point. A depth of a groove formed in the casing string proximate to the contact point can be determined based on the volume of damage.

  • Patent number: 10422925
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments include a method, apparatus, and computer program product for generating hybrid computational meshes around complex and discrete fractures for the purpose of reservoir simulation. For example, one embodiment is a computer-implemented method for modeling three-dimensional (3D) geological fractures. The method includes the steps of receiving a set of fractures with geometry that has been discretized in a two-dimensional plane by a collection of line segments. The method generates closed loops around all the line segments associated with a fracture using a set of stadia and further generates shape elements within the closed loops. A constrained mesh around the closed loops of the set of fracture is generated to fill in a remainder space of the two-dimensional plane. The cell elements in the two-dimensional plane can then be extruded in a third dimension to form a three-dimensional model usable for performing reservoir simulations.

  • Patent number: 10400548
Abstract: System and methods of modeling fluids in a simulation of fluid production in a multi-reservoir system with a common surface network are provided. Pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data is determined for fluids in each of a plurality of reservoirs coupled to the common surface network. A shared equation of state (EOS) characterization representing each of the fluids across the plurality of reservoirs is generated based on the corresponding PVT data. Data representing properties of the fluids in each reservoir is calculated based on the shared EOS characterization of the fluids. When the calculated data is determined not to match the PVT data associated with the fluids in each reservoir, to the shared EOS characterization is adjusted based on a difference between the calculated data and the PVT data.

  • Patent number: 10380281
Abstract: Systems and methods for determining vector-ratio safety factors for wellbore tubular design are provided. Pressure and temperature data for at least one load point along a tubular component of a wellbore are obtained. An effective failure axial load expected at the load point is calculated during a downhole operation to be performed along one or more sections of the wellbore within a subsurface formation, based on the obtained data. An upper boundary and a lower boundary for the effective failure axial load are determined, based on physical properties of the tubular component at the load point. A midpoint of the effective failure axial load is calculated based on the upper and lower boundaries. A critical failure differential pressure is calculated, based on the midpoint of the effective failure axial load. A vector-ratio safety factor is calculated, based on the critical failure differential pressure relative to the effective failure axial load.
