  • Patent number: 7433668
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for controlling a Q-factor for a filter. The method comprises stabilizing an active feedback to provide a variable feedback in a filter, varying the active feedback based on an input signal to the filter, and producing a desired Q-factor for the filter at a first frequency band, in response to the variable feedback. The method further comprises reconfiguring a center frequency and a bandwidth of the filter based on a channel bandwidth of the input signal to the filter to adjust the Q-factor for the filter in response to a second frequency band different than the first frequency band. By reconfiguring a center frequency and a bandwidth of a filter, the Q-factor for the filter, such as a flexible or reconfigurable filter, may be controlled across a multiplicity of frequency band signals.

  • Patent number: 7433315
Abstract: A fast and efficient method for network re-optimization is described. In one embodiment, the technique uses an algorithm that requires limited aggregate information to continually monitor the network for re-optimization opportunities. The re-optimization of the present invention enables a network to accommodate more traffic without adding capacity. The re-optimization of the present invention is performed only when network efficiency benefits above a predetermined threshold may be obtained. In addition, a least-cost set of sessions is determined to perform the re-routing of the present invention to attain the desired network efficiency.

  • Patent number: 7433117
Abstract: A polarization-diverse optical amplifier includes a polarization-sensitive optically active medium and a polarization splitter. The polarization splitter is configured to receive input light, to direct a first polarization component of the received input light to a first optical path segment, and to direct a second polarization component of the received input light to a separate second optical path segment. The active medium has first and second optical ports. The first optical port is at an end of the first optical path segment. The second port is at an end of the second optical path segment. The active medium outputs amplified light from one of the ports in response to receiving the input light at the other of the ports. In a preferred embodiment, the active medium has an internal optical axis, and the polarizations of the first and second components are oriented relative to that axis so that amplification is enhanced. The two optical path segments may include polarization-maintaining optical waveguides.

  • Patent number: 7429858
Abstract: In one embodiment, an integrated magnetometer has a deformable, electrically conducting beam that is mounted on a substrate and adapted to oscillate with respect to the substrate. When the oscillating beam is exposed to a magnetic field, the magnetic field induces an oscillating electromotive force that generates an oscillating electrical signal along the beam. The magnetometer has a detection circuit that detects this oscillating electrical signal and, based on the results of this detection, determines the magnetic-field strength and/or the magnetic-field gradient.

  • Patent number: 7430237
Abstract: In a UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system) based system, a wireless receiver implements “effective signal-to-noise (Eb/No) based BER estimation.” In particular, the wireless receiver comprises a rake receiver, a processor and memory. The rake receiver processes a received signal and provides signal-to-noise ratio values for each slot of each received frame of the received signal. The processor converts these signal-to-noise ratio values for each received frame into an effective signal-to-noise ratio value for the received signal. The processor then uses the effective signal-to-noise ratio value as a pointer, or index, into a look-up table (stored in the memory) and retrieves a BER estimate therefrom.

  • Patent number: 7430241
Abstract: A system and method for transmitting and receiving control information over a control channel of a wireless communication system where the conveyed information is coded and then transformed by a set of transform function selected from a plurality of sets of transform functions. The control information is transmitted as replicated sub-frames containing replicated code words and such a string of transformed replicated code words is referred to as a control message. At a receive end inverse transform functions from different sets of functions are applied to a sub-frame of a control message so that if the sub-frame is successfully decoded the inverse transform function applied to such frame allows the timing of the control message to be determined.

  • Publication number: 20080232314
Abstract: This invention concerns a method of providing a VoIP connection through wireless communication links of a packet-based wireless communication system, and a corresponding base station and terminal. The wireless communication links comprise an uplink transmission path (2uc, 2us) from the terminal to the base station, and a downlink transmission path (2dc, 2ds) from the base station to the terminal. Each of the uplink and downlink transmission paths (2uc, 2us, 2dc, 2ds) have a control channel (2uc, 2dc) and at least one data channel (2us, 2ds). Control messages (20d, 21d, 220u, 221u, 230d, 250u, 260u) are generated for scheduling network resources and for suspending and/or re-issuing a persistent grant of network resources allocated to the VoIP connection.

  • Publication number: 20080232315
Abstract: The invention concerns a method of managing coexisting packet streams (100, 110) in a wireless communication system, and a corresponding controller and a mobile terminal. A first packet stream (110) of the coexisting packet streams (100, 110) requires transmission resources of the wireless communication system at fixed time intervals, and a second packet stream (100) of the coexisting packet streams (100, 110) requires transmission resources of the wireless communication system at dynamically determined time intervals. A schedule defining allocations of transmission resources for the first packet stream (110) is set up. A request for an initial grant of transmission resources for a transmission of a data packet (101) of the second packet stream (100) is issued.
