Abstract: A hardware configuration, a general packet radio services support node (GSN) and method for implementing general packet radio services over a global system for mobile communications network is provided. The hardware configuration comprises a plurality of electronic boards which provide the GPRS functionality. An internal bus, preferably CPCI, provides intra-configuration communications while a ATM bus provides communications to an external circuit. The GSN comprises a single board computer for providing general packet radio services functionality which is required for each call being serviced and a line card processor for providing general packet radio services functionality which is required for each packet being serviced. The GSN may function as a SGSN, GGSN or both.
Abstract: The Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) is to gather outgoing interface identification information (e.g., outgoing interface ID's or IP addresses) for each node in a primary path. This information is “recorded” in an opaque object (referred to herein as the “RECORD PRIMARY PATH” or “RPP” object). In accordance with the present invention, the information contained in the opaque object is stored in two databases for each node, with local interface information of a particular node being stored in its Local Links Database (LLDB), and information identifying the primary links that affect the backup bandwidth calculation for that node being stored in its External Links Database (ELDB). Each node has its own LLDB and ELDB (or has the LLDB and ELDB data stored in a larger database in such a way that it is can be separately accessible on a node-by-node basis) so that, for each node, the information can be obtained and used.
Abstract: A method for providing peer-to-peer virtual private network (P2P-VPN) services over a network. The method includes identifying subnet and host addresses for each user device requesting participation in a virtual private network (VPN) session. Once the subnet and host addresses are identified, a virtual private host (VPH) is initiated for each user device, where each VPH communicates with each user device via a respective tunnel through the network, thereby enabling secure communications between the user devices.
Abstract: A sector switch detection method incorporates two independent, concurrent switch detection processes within a sector switch detection block. Abstract: In the method and system, a transmitter demultiplexes an input data stream into M substreams, where each of the M substreams have a data rate lower than a data rate of the input data stream. The substreams are transmitted as signals from a transmit array of M antennas to be received by a receiver array at a receiver in the system, based on a set of transmission parameters. The transmitter adjusts at least one of the transmission parameters based on a condition experienced by the receiver so as to increase data throughput in the system. The adjustable parameters include the number of antennas to employ, the on/off patterns for the antennas, and eigenmode values for the antennas used in order to determine transmit power. Accordingly, system data throughput may be improved while maintaining transmit power and system bandwidth constant.

Abstract: A method and system for increasing the spectral efficiency of binary coded signals includes encoding an input binary bit sequence such that the input binary bit sequence is converted into a series of rectangular pulses having varying repetition rates. A continuous wave carrier signal is then modulated via a control signal representative of the encoded signal. The modulated optical signal is filtered by a narrow band optical filter to generate a minimum shift keying (MSK) encoded optical signal. In accordance with the present invention, an input binary bit sequence is encoded via a minimum shift keying (MSK) modulation format to improve the spectral efficiency of a binary coded digital signal and to contemporaneously limit distortion of the optical signal induced by optical nonlinear effects during transmission in an optical transmission system.
Abstract: A security system is provided for a facility (10). The security system includes: a central monitoring station (20) that controls one or more security measures for the facility (10); and, a heart rate monitor (30) that detects a heart rate of an individual (50), the heart rate monitor (30) being in wireless communication with the central monitoring station (20). Suitably, the central monitoring station (20) selectively implements one or more of the security measures in response to a determination that an abnormal heart rate has been detected.

Abstract: A method for controlling the flow of information on a high-speed channel between a UE and a Node B is provided. Timing of the high-speed channel is based on timing associated with a low-speed channel and a time at which a grant signal is received from the Node B. Upon receiving a grant signal, the UE adds a preselected duration of time to the timing of the low-speed channel to provide timing on the high-speed channel, where the preselected duration of time is selected to maintain substantial orthogonality between the high-speed and low-speed channels.
Abstract: A modulation and coding scheme for a communication system is based on use of nonsystematic repeat-accumulate codes for encoding channel information for transmission, and for employing a combined detection and decoding arrangement to decode the coded channel information. The nonsystematic repeat-accumulate codes may be generated by an encoder at a transmitter and decoded by a composite detector/decoder arrangement at a receiver.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for providing persistent storage of Web resources. Uniform Resource Locators (“URLs”) that identify Web resources are augmented to include a time stamp. A web browser and a web server are disclosed that accommodate a time stamp parameter and allow a user to refer to any Web address with a precise target date. The disclosed Web browser can optionally include a mechanism to facilitate the specification of the desired date and time, or the user can manually append the time stamp to the URL indicated in the “Location” window of the browser. The persistent Web servers (i) receive URLs containing a time stamp, (ii) extract the time stamp, (iii) retrieve the correct Web page from the archive, (iv) modify the requested Web page to update embedded hyperlinks to incorporate the same time stamp as the requested Web page and (v) return the requested page to the client.
Abstract: Distributing forwarding information in a router that has a distributed processing architecture involves distributing the forwarding information from one instance of an operating system to another instance of an operating system in parallel using two different communications channels where one of the communications channels is characteristically reliable yet relatively slow and where the other one of the communications channels is characteristically unreliable yet relatively fast. The forwarding information that is distributed via the relatively fast communications channel can be used to rapidly update forwarding tables such as hardware forwarding tables while the forwarding information that is distributed via the reliable communications channel can be used to resolve errors that may occur during distribution via the relatively fast communications channel.
Abstract: Techniques for disposing an organic semiconductor film on a receiver substrate, comprising the steps of: depositing an organic semiconductor film onto a donor substrate, the semiconductor film having a first surface facing the donor substrate and having an exposed second surface; bringing the exposed second surface adjacent a receiver substrate such that the semiconductor film is in contact with both substrates; and then, moving the donor and receiver substrates apart; and wherein a surface portion of the receiver substrate is maintained above its glass transition during the moving step. Active organic semiconductor devices.
Abstract: Severe inter-symbol interference (ISI), introduced by narrow-band optical filtering in high spectral efficiency wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) systems to avoid coherent WDM crosstalk, can be substantially mitigated by the use of maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) reception. Compared to conventional threshold detection, the use of an MLSE receiver allows, for example, a 22% reduction in optical receive filter bandwidth. For tight optical filtering, the MLSE receiver benefits from taking into account noise correlation. MLSE receivers with one and with two samples per bit are described and it is shown that while oversampling is beneficial for wide-band optical filters, the benefit goes away for narrow-band optical filtering, thereby facilitating MLSE design for rates beyond 10 Gb/s.

Abstract: Actual caller identification is provided. Biometric information is collected from a calling party. For example, retinal scan or facial recognition information is collected from a calling party. An element of a communications network receives the biometric information and uses the biometric information to determine the identity of the calling party. For instance, the biometric information is used to generate an index or key into an identity database. The index or key is used to retrieve identity information associated with a record including matching biometric information. The identity information is transmitted, for example, to user equipment of a called party.

Abstract: An AAL2/SSCS packet voice system multiplexes various forms of voice-band traffic including voice packets, fax packets, and data packets into a virtual circuit (VC). This AAL2/SSCS packet voice system executes a dynamic call admission algorithm that takes into account call type in deciding whether to admit a new call to the VC. In particular, this approach takes into account different bandwidth needs for different call types. The AAL2/SSCS packet voice system also performs bit or block dropping on voice packets to mitigate the effects of traffic congestion. The bit or block dropping is done based on the packet queue fill value exceeding at least one queue threshold. Further, the AAL2/SSCS packet voice system also dynamically varies a queue threshold as a function of capacity.
Abstract: Network efficiency is improved by building and maintaining path integrity tables in nodes of a network. The tables include path integrity information for paths associated with the nodes. A path is defined by a source address, a destination address and a port or version number. Once a node is made aware of a path, either by handling network message traffic associated with the path or through manual entry, the node maintains path status information with information provided by normal network message traffic, or absent the normal network message traffic, by transmitting Echo Request messages and processing information related to Echo Response messages or the lack thereof. Information related to paths that are disabled for longer than a disabled path duration limit is deleted from the tables. A Gratuitous GTP Echo Response message can notify other nodes of an administrative state change in a node.
