Patent number: 6958668Abstract: An active inductor with a smaller voltage drop with respect to the power supply voltage of an integrated circuit can be realized by an active inductor which is biased from a voltage higher than the power supply voltage, the higher voltage being generatable on the integrated circuit. Advantageously, more headroom is left for the amplifying circuit coupled to the active inductor to operate properly than with prior art active inductors. Furthermore, by not simply operating the entire active inductor from a higher voltage, the power dissipation remains the same as if the active inductor were connected as in the prior art only to the power supply voltage, and the task of generating the voltage higher than the power supply voltage is simplified, because only leakage current, e.g., nanoamps, is required.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2000Date of Patent: October 25, 2005Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Eduard Sackinger

Patent number: 6958729Abstract: An efficient, low-loss, low sidelobe, high dynamic range phased-array radar antenna system is disclosed that uses metamaterials, which are manmade composite materials having a negative index of refraction, to create a biconcave lens architecture (instead of the aforementioned biconvex lens) for focusing the microwaves transmitted by the antenna. Accordingly, the sidelobes of the antenna are reduced. Attenuation across microstrip transmission lines may be reduced by using low loss transmission lines that are suspended above a ground plane a predetermined distance in a way such they are not in contact with a solid substrate. By suspending the microstrip transmission lines in this manner, dielectric signal loss is reduced significantly, thus resulting in a less-attenuated signal at its destination.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2004Date of Patent: October 25, 2005Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Carsten Metz

Patent number: 6959323Abstract: This document describes a protocol for reliably synchronizing states of nodes in a distributed environment through use of a Scalable Atomic Multicast (SAM) Service that ensures both atomicity and total order among messages sent to a multicast group. In addition to possessing good scalability property, this fault-tolerant protocol does not require explicit knowledge of multicast group membership, allows for non-disturbing state synchronization, and supports asynchronous non-blocking communications. According to one aspect of this invention, a dedicated sequencer is responsible solely for assigning sequence numbers to the multicast messages. The sequencer does not multicast the messages. Another aspect of the invention is the use of receiver-driven negative acknowledgments. According to third aspect, the invention supports message consolidation and garbage collection.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1999Date of Patent: October 25, 2005Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Hong-Yi Tzeng, Yin Zhang

Publication number: 20050234764Abstract: Systems and techniques for determining an amount of reserve material required to meet demand. A period of uncertainty during which varying demand for a product or component must be considered may be computed by taking into account various time intervals relating to the time required to obtain a component of a product and to and incorporate it into a product that is ready for delivery. The number of reserve products or components required may be computed by taking into account the demand for the component. The demand may suitably be expressed in terms of a forecast demand per time unit and a variance factor that provides a desired assurance that demand can be met in the face of deviations from the forecast demand. The forecast demand and variance factor are used to compute a reserve needed in light of the period of uncertainty for the product or component being considered.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 19, 2004Publication date: October 20, 2005Applicant: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: John King, Francis Zane

Patent number: 6956898Abstract: An encoder generates an estimate of apparent inter-image motion utilizing a dense motion field in a sequence of video frames or other images. The estimate in an illustrative embodiment includes a motion vector for each pixel of the dense motion field. The estimate is generated at least in part as a solution to a constrained optimization problem based on a multiscale data model characterizing the motion between pixels of the dense motion field and designated neighbor pixels. The estimate is used for motion compensation in encoding the corresponding images, and is itself encoded for transmission to a decoder for use in decoding the encoded images. In the illustrative embodiment, the multiscale data model characterizes spatial, temporal and scale coherence properties of the motion as a Markov random field (MRF), thereby ensuring that the resulting motion vectors can be efficiently coded for transmission to the decoder.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1999Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Christine Irene Podilchuk, Sergio Daniel Servetto
