Patent number: 5713693Abstract: The invention concerns a shaft-hub joint between two equiaxial machine parts for transmission of high torques in a power train--a first machine part on the power input end and a second machine part of the power output end. The machine parts are joined to each other in a fashion movable relative to each other but rotationally fixed, and a positive-locking overload relief mechanism is provided between the machine parts, the individual locking elements of which are prestressed in the sense of locking. The overload relief mechanism locks the two machine parts against axial thrust up to a specific adjustable limit value whereby the positive locking will be eliminated when the limit value is exceeded. The interlocking elements comprise bolts with a head surface beveled in wedge fashion.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1996Date of Patent: February 3, 1998Assignee: J.M. Patent number: 5713472Abstract: A carton blank including a reinforced hang tab. The hang tab includes a tab having an upper portion, a top edge defined by a fold line and a cutout formed in the upper portion. A foldover panel is connected to the tab at the fold line. The foldover panel has first and second side flaps and a middle bridge portion that define a notch formed in the foldover panel. Upon assembly, the foldover panel is folded along the fold line and secured to the tab so that the notch overlaps the tab cutout to form a reinforced hang tab with an opening formed therein. The first and second side flaps and the middle bridge portion of the foldover panel reinforce the opening and the upper portion of the upper tab to prevent the tab from easily ripping or breaking. The lower tab that is secured to the bottom portion of the upper tab is configured to correspond to the notch in the foldover panel.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1996Date of Patent: February 3, 1998Assignee: F. Patent number: 5714680Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for measuring pressure in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine is provided with a non-intrusive, metal-embedded fiber optic pressure sensor. A Fabry-Perot Interferometer is arranged in a terminated, single mode fiber to function as a pressure gauge. The fiber Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FFPI) is embedded in a metal part which is disposed in the cylinder head of the engine. The metal part and FFPI experience a longitudinal compression in response to the pressure in the chamber. In another aspect of the invention, a non-intrusive fiber containing the FFPI is embedded in a hole drilled or otherwise provided in the metal housing of a spark plug. The spark plug is threaded into the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and is directly exposed to the combustion chamber pressure. Consequently, the spark plug housing and FFPI experience a longitudinal strain in response to the pressure in the chamber.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1993Date of Patent: February 3, 1998Assignee: The Texas A&M University SystemInventors: Henry F. Patent number: 5711533Abstract: An oilfield stuffing box 10 employs mating flange plates 15, 16 with bolt holes appreciably larger in diameter than the bolts employed to hold the flange plates together, thereby permitting lateral displacement between the two flange plates. The lateral adjustment permits the tubular stuffing box section 13 carried centrally on the upper plate 15 to be centrally positioned about a polished rod 12 extending between the two flanges. The lower plate 15 is preferably integral with a well head section 14, and is also provided with the large diameter bolt holes to double the range of permitted lateral adjustment. The relative size of the bolts, bolt holes, polished rod diameter and well head diameter are selected for optimum lateral adjustment with a minimum practical hole-to-bolt size differential. A static seal 22 between the two mating flange plates provides a leak-proof seal at any of the different lateral positions between the two flanged sections 13, 14.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1995Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: J.M. Patent number: 5711268Abstract: A rotary vane internal combustion engine wherein the section of the rotor housing where ignition takes place is formed in the shape of a circular arc matching the curvature of the rotor, with the balance of the housing periphery being composed of a series of tangent arcs to define an elliptical shape that is continuously concave and has no drastic changes in curvature. The rotor and housing are "stretched" along their axial dimensions so that each combustion chamber has an axial measurement substantially greater than its circumferential measurement, and each segment of the rotor surface between adjacent vanes has formed therein a plurality of combustion chamber pockets spaced from one another along the axial dimension of the rotor and each provided with a spark plug.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1995Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: C & M Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Carl J. Patent number: 5712706Abstract: A non-contact laser-based sensor guided by a precision mechanical system scans a thread form producing a set of digitized images of the thread form. The digitized images are analyzed to derive quantitative information about thread characteristics such as pitch, lead, root radius, flank angle, surface roughness, helix variation, and pitch diameter. Thread form data may be stored and later retrieved in order to provide traceability and verification of thread form measurements to a predetermined thread form specification. The apparatus and method of the invention can measure characteristics for shapes similar to threads, such as gears and dies used for cold forming processes. The thread measurement system can be mounted on thread making machines and used for on-line monitoring and control of the thread forming process.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1996Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: M&M Precision Systems CorporationInventors: Glen M.
