  • Patent number: 5531714
Abstract: A multifunctional visceral catheter having a self-guiding system in the form of a pair of fiberoptic sensor systems which are sensitive to a predetermined analyte, the analyte being one which is removed from the vascular circuit of interest to a high degree, such as galactose in the hepatic venous system or creatinine in the renal venous system. One of the sensors is disposed on the catheter so as to be positioned within the venous system of interest, while the other sensor remains outside the venous system in the vena cava. A substantial difference between analyte concentration values as measured via the two fiberoptic sensor systems provides immediate confirmation that the catheter is properly positioned. In addition to being self-guiding, the catheter provides for direct sampling of venous blood; includes a fiberoptic system for continuously monitoring oxygen saturation in the hepatic or renal venous blood; and is capable of measuring absolute hepatic or renal blood flow.

  • Patent number: 5528897
Abstract: A fuel supply system for a gas turbine engine is disclosed which incorporates a discharge conduit into the fuel supply system such that an increase in the temperature of the fuel in the fuel injector conduits after engine shut-down will cause a valve in the discharge line to open before the opening of the valve in the fuel injector conduit, thereby directing excess fuel to a receiver or a tank, rather than into the hot combustion chamber. A fuel flow valve is connected to the fuel supply conduit, the discharge conduit, as well as the fuel injector conduits. Under normal operating conditions, a valve member within the fuel flow valve is positioned so as to enable communication between the fuel feed conduit and the fuel injector conduits so that fuel may be supplied to the fuel injectors. When the valve element is moved the a second position, after engine shut-down, it seals off the fuel feed conduit and enables communication between the fuel injector conduits and the discharge conduit.

  • Patent number: 5529285
Abstract: A valve comprises a valve body having threaded connections on each end. A unit handled valve mechanism includes a cage carrying a spring loaded floating valve ball. The valve mechanism is placed in and removed from the valve body without the use of special tools. The valve mechanism includes lip type polyseals allowing pressure from below to leak past a lower valve seat so pressure from below causes the valve ball to seal only against an upper seat assembly. The only segment of the valve ball in substantial compression is immediately adjacent the upper seat assembly. An actuator for the valve fits onto a connector between the actuator and ball in only one manner, so the indicator on the actuator correctly points at the correct indicia on the valve body describing the valve condition, i.e. open or closed. An improved connector between the actuator and the valve ball minimizes the potential of deformation due to abuse.
