  • Patent number: 5460310
Abstract: The magnetically coupling ski rack has a panel made of magnetic material which is associable with a motor vehicle roof, and removable therefrom by lifting one edge of the magnetic panel and then gradually removing the entire magnetic panel. Ski-supporting brackets are connected to the magnetic panel. The magnetic panel is covered by a covering element. A locking mechanism is provided for preventing removal of skis from the ski supporting brackets. The locking mechanism also prevents removal of the covering element in order to gain access to the magnetic panel, which in turn prevents removal of the magnetic panel from a vehicle roof.

  • Patent number: 5458167
Abstract: An automatic filling system for a compressed gas tank includes a controller that measures the rate of fill of a tank being filled in order to provide an accurate estimate of the fill time for the tank, given available source pressure. The controller maintains a high set level and a low set level for banks or compressed gas reservoirs, and the controller automatically cycles a compressor to fill the banks when one of the banks falls below the respective low set pressure. Additionally, when the compressor is running to fill one of the banks, all of the banks are topped off to the high set pressure in order to minimize compressor cycling. The controller automatically directs compressed air to a booster pump when available bank pressure is insufficient to complete a filling operation. In this way filling operations are completed when a compressor is not available, or when it would be undesirable to cycle a compressor.

  • Patent number: 5458516
Abstract: An atmospheric air pressure inflatable garment has an inner layer and outer layer define a confined space with a compressible material therein. The compressible material has resiliency and strength characteristics so that it compresses under atmospheric conditions when the air pressure in the confined space is reduced to sub-atmospheric pressure and an air passage adapted to permit passage of air into and out of the confined space but not water when a seal for sealing the passage is released. The garment is stored with the air removed and permitting atmospheric air to fill the space when the seal is opened raise the pressure in the space to atmospheric and causes the compressible material to expand separating the inner and outer layers and forming an insulation therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5457450
Abstract: The present invention relates to an LED traffic signal light containing numerous LEDs and a voltage compensation circuit which allows the traffic light to operate over a wide range of input power voltages, while generating sufficient light intensity to control traffic at a highway intersection. The voltage compensation circuit achieves these objectives without substantially increasing the power consumption, overall cost, or failure rate of the LED traffic signal light. In the preferred embodiment, the voltage compensation circuit disables or rearranges a first and then a second set of LEDs in the traffic light, as the input power voltage drops below a first and then a second threshold voltage, so that the remaining LEDs will be driven by an increased current and generate a greater overall light intensity than if all of the LEDs were driven by the decreased current that would result from the decreased input power voltage.

  • Patent number: 5456020
Abstract: Described is a method of determining the position of a position-control element relative to a reference body, the position-control element or the reference body carrying a first scale with graduations placed at constant intervals, and the reference body or position-control element having a first scanner which, from an analysis of the graduations and from the angles subtended by the distances between the first scanner location and three graduations on the scale, calculates the coordinates of the first scanner location trigonometrically. In order to make it possible to calculate other coordinates and angles of inclination, the method calls for at least one additional scanner mounted a certain distance from the first scanner. All the coordinates of the scanner locations are processed together, allowing for the distance separating the scanners.

  • Patent number: 5454525
Abstract: A method for conditioning a racquet string which is tensioned to an elongation between 5 and 15% and in this state is wound on a spool. To implement this process, an untreated string segment is drawn off a supply drum and the end of the untreated string segment is affixed to the periphery of the spool. Thereupon the spool is moved away from the supply drum such that a specified winding length corresponding to the untreated string segment is tensioned to produce a predetermined elongation. While the tension is maintained, the elongated string segment, with simultaneous motion of the spool toward the supply drum, is then wound on the supply spool and lastly the second end of this string segment is affixed to the periphery of the spool.
