  • Patent number: 5425252
Abstract: The needle selection device has multiple selectors arranged in axial grooves formed in the skirt of the needle cylinder, each selector arranged below a needle and oscillatable in a radial plane of the needle cylinder from an active position, in which a butt protrudes radially from its groove, for the engagement of the butt with cams for actuating the selectors arranged around the needle cylinder to move the selectors along their groove in the needle cylinder so as to activate the overlying needle, to an inactive position, in which the selector is positioned in its groove in the needle cylinder so that it does not interfere with the selector actuation cams. The device has selector extraction elements to transfer the selectors from the inactive position to the active position and selection elements to transfer the selectors from the active position to the inactive position or to keep them in the active position.

  • Patent number: 5425225
Abstract: A telescopic extensible rod, suited to be used as extension in agricultural pneumatic tools for picking fruit from trees or of cutting off branches of trees, is formed by two coaxial tubular elements, i.e. a first tubular element and a second tubular element that slides inside the first tubular element. A pneumatic actuator can be connected to the free end of the second tubular element. A coupling is mounted between the tubular elements to removably lock their reciprocal sliding. Two coaxial pipes, a first pipe and a second pipe, are located inside the tubular elements, the second pipe being designed to slide inside the first one while keeping the seal because of the presence of a sleeve mounted between the pipes and inside the first pipe. The free ends of the pipes are in fluid-dynamic connection respectively with a compressed fluid delivery and with the pneumatic actuator.

  • Patent number: 5423628
Abstract: A winch assembly is connected to each end of a vibratory concrete screed to move the screed across a concrete slab to be finished. Each winch assembly includes a rotatable drum with a cable wound on the drum. The free end of each cable is connected to a fixed object mounted along the side of the concrete slab. To wind the cable on the drum and move the screed along the slab, the eccentric drive shaft of the screed is connected through a variable speed belt drive to the respective drum. Each belt drive includes an adjusting mechanism for varying the effective diameter of a belt drive pulley, thus providing a variation in speed. Each winch assembly also includes an eccentric gear speed reducing mechanism, which is connected between the belt drive and the drum to further reduce the output speed to the cable drum.

  • Patent number: 5424960
Abstract: Characteristic parameters of a torque of a stepping motor and its associated driving current or voltage are measured in advance to providetorque vs. characteristic information data representative of the torque vs. driving current/voltage characterisitcs. Then, the above characteristic parameters are measured again when a real load is applied to a stepping motor as installed with associated mechanical coupling components. An actual load torque is determined by referencing the subsequently measured characteristic parameters to the previously obtained torque vs. characteristic information data. A load inertia moment can be determined by subtracting the motor's rotor inertia moment from a determined inertia moment of the entire system. Efficiency of the motor can be determined by multiplying the output of the measured load torque by the nuber of revolutions per second thereof and dividing this by the power supplied to the motor or driving circuit.

  • Patent number: 5424284
Abstract: This invention relates to drilling fluid additives that suppress clay swelling within a subterranean well and to methods for controlling clay swelling during the drilling of a subterranean well. In one embodiment trihydroxy alkyl amine is reacted with an alkyl halide or a water soluble quaternary amine to form a quaternized trihydroxy alkyl amine. The reaction products can also include condensed reaction products of quaternized trihydroxy alkyl amines. In another embodiment a choline derivative is used. The quaternized reaction products and choline derivatives are characterized by low toxicity and compatibility with anionic drilling fluid components. The products are added to water base drilling fluids which are circulated throughout a well. The drilling fluid additives and the method of controlling clay swelling provide for improved control of the rheological properties of drilling fluids along with increased environmental and drilling fluid compatibility.

  • Patent number: 5423174
Abstract: An anti-icing system to prevent the formation of ice on, or to remove ice from selected portions of a gas turbine engine is disclosed that is not directly dependent upon the mode or speed of operation of the gas turbine engine. The system has a heat exchanger into which flows a tapped portion of air from the compressor and fuel from the engines fuel supply system. The fuel supply system includes a fuel return circuit which connects the fuel pump outlet to the fuel pump inlet so as to return or recycle fuel to the fuel pump inlet when the engine demand for fuel is low, such as under lower power operating conditions. This recycling of the fuel raises the temperature of the fuel such that, in the heat exchanger, heat is transferred to the tapped portion of the air from the compressor thereby raising the temperature of such tapped air such that it may be directed onto selected portions of the gas turbine engine to either prevent formation of ice, or to remove ice from these portions.
