  • Patent number: 6556680
Abstract: A method for verifying the authority of a user to access by a mobile telephone either a payment system or a data system. A user card that carries a microprocessor and a memory that includes an encryption key is inserted into a mobile telephone to initiate a connection with the payment system or the data system via the mobile telephone system network. Using the mobile telephone keypad, the user enters an identifying number that is unique to that user, and the microprocessor performs a calculation using the encryption key and the user identifying number to obtain a calculated signature that is transmitted over the mobile telephone network to a computer connected with the payment system or the data system to which access is desired.

  • Patent number: 6555424
Abstract: The present invention discloses a thin film transistor with sub-gates and Schottky source/drain and a method of manufacturing the same. Doping of source/drain, and the following annealing steps used conventionally are omitted and the complexity of process and process costs are reduced. The temperature of the process is also decreased. A thin film transistor with sub-gates and Schottky source/drain of the invention is able to operate in both the n type and p type channel modes on the same transistor element depending on the biased voltage of the sub-gate. Moreover, an electric junction is formed by induction, using bias voltage applied on the sub-gate, which takes the place of the conventional source/drain extensions. Consequently, the off-state leakage current is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6556351
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provide for receiving a first set of optical data from a first field of view and receiving a second set of optical data from a second field of view. A portion of the first set of optical data is communicated and a portion of the second set of optical data is reflected, both toward an optical combiner. The optical combiner then focuses the portions onto the image plane such that information at the image plane that is associated with the first and second fields of view is received by an optical detector and used to determine an attitude characteristic.

  • Patent number: 6555001
Abstract: A method of remediating contaminated groundwater using tree crops and a method of accelerating the root growth of said tree crops in order to hasten the remediation process. Trees are planted in the soil above an area of contaminated groundwater. At least one trench is placed in the soil near the trees. A conduit is placed into the trench and connected to a supply of a fluid beneficial to the root growth of the trees. The fluid is passed through the conduit, into the trench, and thereafter into the surrounding soil. As it flows outward from the trench, the fluid forms a wetting front that eventually contacts the tree roots and stimulates their growth toward the groundwater below.

  • Patent number: 6556821
Abstract: The present invention regards method and apparatus relating to wireless office system. The present invention addresses the problem of enabling it to be determined in the wireless office system (5) when voice mail messages for users of mobile stations having subscriptions in the wireless office system (5) are received at the voice mail system (15), the voice mail system (15) being associated with but not included in the wireless office system (5). The duration(s) of greeting message(s) associated with the voice mail system (15) and the or each mobile station having an associated voice mailbox (16b1-16bM) in the voice mail system (15) is/are measured. The connection times to the voice mail system (15) are measured when calls for the mobile stations are forwarded to the voice mail system (15) from the wireless office system (5). By comparing the duration(s) of the greeting message(s) with the measured connection times, it is determined whether voice mail messages have been received.

  • Patent number: 6553010
Abstract: Whether a service is available for use by a mobile station in a radiocommunication system is ascertained by determining a quality value that represents the mobile station's transmission power capability that is above an amount of transmission power that will be consumed by known losses for the service and determining whether the service is available for use by the mobile station on the basis of a comparison between the quality value and a predetermined number. The quality value may be determined by subtracting the amount of transmission power that will be consumed by known losses for the service from a maximum available power that the mobile station can deliver. Known losses may include the power loss on a channel between the mobile station and a base station, the amount of power that is needed to overcome interference, and the amount of power needed to accommodate the service.

  • Patent number: 6550074
Abstract: An affordable plumbing device that uses a compressed gas and a burst disk having a relatively even surface of substantially uniform thickness to produce a sudden discharge of energy to forcibly act against any obstruction that may interfere with the proper function of a drain. The plumbing device has a cylindrical chamber for receiving the compressed gas and may generally take the shape of a plunger, which is flexible to use and is easy to store. A portion of the chamber forms a receiving chamber with the burst disk for harnessing and directing the energy of the compressed gas to clear the drain.

  • Patent number: 6549586
Abstract: Speech enhancement is provided in dual microphone noise reduction systems by including spectral subtraction algorithms using linear convolution, causal filtering and/or spectrum dependent exponential averaging of the spectral subtraction gain function. According to exemplary embodiments, when a far-mouth microphone is used in conjunction with a near-mouth microphone, it is possible to handle non-stationary background noise as long as the noise spectrum can continuously be estimated from a single block of input samples. The far-mouth microphone, in addition to picking up the background noise, also picks up the speaker's voice, albeit at a lower level than the near-mouth microphone. To enhance the noise estimate, a spectral subtraction stage is used to suppress the speech in the far-mouth microphone signal. To be able to enhance the noise estimate, a rough speech estimate is formed with another spectral subtraction stage from the near-mouth signal.

  • Patent number: 6546769
Abstract: A self-powered electric lock includes a lock bolt and a first engagement element having disengaged and engageable positions. An electric actuator includes an output operative to move the first engagement element to its engageable position. A manually operated rotatable member is operatively coupled to the first engagement element when the first engagement element is in its engageable position. A lock bolt drive mechanism is coupled to the lock bolt and to the first engagement element when the first engagement element is in its engageable position. The movable output moves the first engagement element to its engageable position upon input of correct electronic data. An electricity generator is coupled to the manually operated rotatable member. The electricity powers the electric actuator and an electronic data input device. The manually operated rotatable member is also used to actuate the lock bolt drive mechanism and retract the lock bolt.
