    Abstract: Disclosed are a catalyst for olefin polymerization comprising (A) a compound of a transition metal in Group IVB of the periodic table which contains a ligand having a cyclopentadienyl skeleton, (B) an organoaluminum compound and any one of (C1) a Br.phi.nsted acid; (C2) a material obtained by contacting (c-1) a magnesium compound with (c-2) an electron donor; and (C3) a material obtained by contacting (c-1) a magnesium compound, (c-2) an electron donor and (c-3) an organometallic compound with each other. Also disclosed are processes for polymerizing an olefin in the presence of the above-mentioned catalysts for olefin polymerization. Such catalysts and processes for olefin polymerization as described above are excellent in olefin polymerization activity and economical efficiency.

    Abstract: A catalyst for the polymerization of an alkylene oxide compound is disclosed. This catalyst is composed of a phosphazene compound or a phosphazenium salt which is derived from the phosphazene compound and an active hydrogen compound. A poly(alkylene oxide) can be efficiently produced by polymerizing the alkylene oxide compound in the presence of the catalyst and, when the catalyst is composed of the phosphazene compound, the active hydrogen compound. The poly(alkylene oxide) contains no metal component and compared with those produced using conventional amine-base catalysts, has also been improved significantly in odor.

    Abstract: Disclosed are (1) an optical resin composition comprising Component A: a thiourethane prepolymer compound prepared by reacting a polythiol compound having at least 3 functional groups and an intramolecular sulfide bond, with a polyisocyanate compound in a molar ratio of --SH to --NCO ranging from 3.0 to 7.0; Component B: at least one (meth) acrylate compound having at least 2 functional groups; and Component C: a compound radically polymerizable with Components A and B, in 10 to 50% by weight, 35 to 70% by weight, and 5 to 30% by weight, respectively; (2) a preparation process for an optical resin by photopolymerization; (3) an optical resin; and (4) a prepolymer suitable for Component A. The composition is a novel, rapidly polymerizable composition for an optical resin. Furthermore, a resin prepared by curing the composition not only has a high refractive index and a high Abbe number, but also is excellent in transparency and optical homogeneity.

Also disclosed are a liquid crystal material consisting of the polycyclic compound, a liquid crystal composition comprising the liquid crystal material, and a liquid crystal element. This novel polycyclic compound is optically active and capable of being in a smectic phase in a wide temperature range including room temperature. The polycyclic compound can be used as a ferroelectric liquid crystal material or an antiferroelectric liquid crystal material.

    Abstract: A latch device on a vehicle tailgate having upper and lower doors comprises an open handle assembly for releasing a lower latch assembly from a lower striker, a key cylinder for releasing an upper latch assembly and an upper striker, a coupling mechanism displaceable between a locked position for disabling an opening operation of the handle assembly and an unlocked position for enabling the opening operation of the handle assembly. The upper latch assembly has a latch and a ratchet. The ratchet is displaceable between an engaging position for engaging with the latch located in a door-closed position and an initial position for making contact with the latch located in a door-open position. The coupling mechanism is displaced to the locked position when the ratchet is in the engaging position and displaced to the unlocked position when the ratchet is in the initial position.

    Abstract: An adhesive resin composition contains at least a partially or wholly graft-modified .alpha.-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound random copolymer having a graft quantity of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or its derivative ranging from 0.01 to 30% by weight. A laminate comprises (I) a polyester resin layer or a polycarbonate layer, (II) an adhesive layer formed from the above-mentioned adhesive resin composition and (III) a saponified olefin/vinyl acetate copolymer layer. The adhesive resin composition is free from lowering of adhesive strength even when contacted with, for example, hot water. The laminate has excellent gas barrier properties and is capable of being subjected to retorting treatment.

    Abstract: A method of terminating a gas phase polymerization of an olefin to be conducted subsequent to producing a polyolefin by feeding a gaseous olefin into a fluidized bed reactor to polymerize the gaseous olefin while holding solid particles containing a catalyst in a fluid state, said method comprising introducing a deactivator in the fluidized bed reactor through at least two deactivator introduction ports of the fluidized bed reactor so as to terminate the gas phase polymerization. The height of the fluidized bed is generally at least 3 m. The deactivator is preferably introduced through deactivator introduction ports disposed at heights Ha=-0.3 D to 0.3 D (a) and Hb=0.3 D to 2.0 D (b) (D is the inside diameter of the fluidized bed reactor (cm)). After the termination of the polymerization, the gas phase polymerization can directly be resumed.

The composition comprises 5 to 95 parts by weight of a high molecular weight vinyl copolymer polymer and 95 to 5 parts by weight of a low molecular weight vinyl copolymer. The former ethylene polymer has a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of from 200,000 to 1,000,000 and a ratio (Mw/Mn) of the weight average molecular weight (Mw) to a number average molecular weight (Mn) of from 8 to 300, and the latter vinyl copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of from 3,000 to 20,000. At least one of the former and latter vinyl copolymer, preferably, the former vinyl copolymer is an ethylene polymer which has been obtained by conducting polymerization in the presence of a monomer having an ionization potential of from 10.0 to 15.0 eV and a difference of from 9.0 to 15.0 eV in level between a highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and a lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), both determined by computational chemistry.
