Abstract: A radio is presented in which a short-range antenna, along with a speaker, is contained within a non-conductive speaker bracket. The antenna is a PIFA that is bent and extends through the speaker bracket so that the distance between the free end of the PIFA and various metallic components of the radio including the chassis and speaker is maximized. The structure containing the PIFA is flexible and also contains a contact area where feed/ground contact for the PIFA is made as well as contact for audio components including a speaker and microphone. A flexible cable and extension portion of the flexible structure routes the signals to the audio components far enough away from the PIFA so that the amount of crosstalk is insignificant. The free end of the PIFA and launch pad where feed/ground contact for the PIFA is made are non-planar.

Abstract: A noise cancellation device includes a plurality of first computation modules, a formant detection module, a direction of arrival module and a beamformer. The plurality of first computation modules receives raw audio data and generates a respective transformed signal as a function of formants. A first transformed signal relates to speech data and a second transformed signal relates to noise data. The formant detection module receives the first transformed signal and generates a frequency range data signal. The direction of arrival module receives the first and second transformed signals, determines a cross-correlation between the first and second transformed signals, and generates a spatial orientation data signal. The beamformer receives the first and second transformed signals, the frequency range data signal, and the spatial orientation data signal and generates modification data at selected formant ranges to eliminate a maximum amount of the noise data.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for demodulating an FM RF signal is presented. An Adaptive Differentiate Cross Multiply (ADCM) system in which the energy estimate of the desired on-channel RF is generated using adaptive filtering. The adaptive filter includes low pass filtering of the instantaneous energy estimate. The bandwidth of the LPF is adjusted in real time based on the received signal strength energy estimate, the periodicity of any changes in the energy estimate, AGC setting for the receiver, and/or the type of sub-audible signaling applied to the RF signal if known. After the bandwidth is set, the optimum filtered energy estimate is applied to the system to demodulate the received information free from distortion artifacts associated with IQ imbalance. A normalized signal in the ADCM system is clipped by a limiter whose clipping threshold is equal to a maximum gain of differentiators in the ADCM system.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting video is provided herein. A video representation is segmented into video chunks, with each chunk spanning a different time interval. Each chunk may be divided into two or more sub-chunks. During operation, the client requests a sub-chunk of a particular video chunk and then possibly requests an additional sub-chunk of the video chunk. The client then combines and decodes the sub-chunks to provide a reconstructed video chunk for playback on a device. In an embodiment, I-frames of a video chunk are made available in a separate sub-chunk file than P-frames (or B-frames).

Abstract: A communication system (100) permits an inter-network handoff between networks (110, 120) operated by different network service providers, which handoff does not require that the networks interface with each other. A first user terminal (102), engaged in a wireless communication session with a second user terminal (134) via a first such network (110), detects a second such network (120). The first user terminal provides user identity information associated with the first user terminal and applicable in the second network to the second user terminal, and sets up a first leg of a communication session with the second network. The second user terminal puts the communication session with the first network on hold, sets up a communication session with the first user terminal via the second network based on the provided user identity information, and the first and second user terminals terminate the communication session with the first network.

Abstract: A communication device is presented that has different processors and a power amplifier. One of the processors receives a signal from a monitor and indicates that an alarm exists to a diagnostics module. The other processor uses the envelope signal of the input signal to be amplified and either the signal from the diagnostics module, the monitor or the power amplifier to adjust modulation of the power supply of the power amplifier dependent on the type of alarm. Abstract: A radio is presented that has a processor, memory, modulator and a power amplifier. An envelope of a signal to be transmitted is used by the processor to control modulation of the voltage of the power amplifier by the modulator between a desired minimum voltage and a desired maximum voltage. Using the memory, the desired minimum voltage is determined from the desired maximum voltage and these voltages are less than nominal minimum and maximum voltage, respectively. The desired minimum voltage is tailored for the radio and takes into account environmental conditions to optimize operating conditions for the radio. If the range of voltages would exceed the dynamic range of the radio, the modulation provided by the modulator is controlled by the processor in steps until the desired minimum and maximum voltages are achieved.
