  • Patent number: 6859934
Abstract: A scanning device for a disc-shaped information carrier about an axis of rotation having a linear motor that can displace the scanning unit in a radial direction. The linear motor comprises a first part and a second part guided with respect to each other in the radial direction by a straight guide. The first part comprises pairs of magnets having opposite directions of magnetization. The second part includes an electric coil system with winding portions. The linear motor is further provided with a control unit for controlling an electric current in the coil system. The control unit controls electric current in the winding portions if the winding portion is present in a magnetic transition region between the pair of magnets, resulting in a Lorentz force in the winding portion, substantially perpendicularly to the straight guide. The Lorentz force is used to fix the degrees of freedom of the second part with respect to the first part.

  • Patent number: 6857190
Abstract: A method is disclosed for forming an annular collar (11) that is essentially radial on the hollow annular end portion (12) of a port (7). This method has the following steps: A. radially deforming the end portion (12) by means of a first tool (16), in which the axis (18) of the tool (16) and the axis (5) of the end portion (12) form a non-zero angle ? between them to obtain an essentially radial collar preform (17); and B. deforming this preform (17) by means of a second tool (23) to obtain a final shaping of the collar (11) by pressing. This invention also relates to a method of retaining a bearing (1) on a shaft (7), and to the assembly that comprises this shaft (7) and bearing (1).

  • Patent number: 6859883
Abstract: In one example embodiment involving a high-speed parallel-data communication from a first module to a second module, a termination circuit is adapted to reduce power consumption at the second module. The termination circuit includes resistive circuits respectively coupled to a plurality of parallel data-carrying lines that form the data bus. The other ends of the resistive circuits are interconnected to provide a reference voltage using the data on the parallel data-carrying lines. Consistent with one embodiment of the present invention, the communication approach uses data sets encoded so that each data set includes the same number of ones and zeroes; in this manner the reference voltage is always at midpoint and useful in providing termination to the data-carrying lines at all times.

  • Patent number: 6859203
Abstract: An imaging method for imaging a subject (18) including fibrous/anisotropic structures (102) includes acquiring three-dimensional image representations without and with a plurality of different diffusion weighting and directions. When a user (56) hovers a selection device over a voxel of the image, a fiber representation (54) is extracted in substantially real time. The representation is generated by following a direction of a major eigenvector e1 from voxel to voxel. A human-viewable display of the fiber representation is produced (210).

  • Patent number: 6859142
Abstract: Theft protection of electronic apparatuses connected to a bus system is implemented in a manner particularly suitable for use in a digital home network based on the IEEE 1394 standard. At least one of the apparatuses in the network is equipped with a monitoring unit switchable between an activated and a de-activated state. In the activated state, the monitoring unit monitors the occurrence of a bus reset which is generated particularly upon removal of an apparatus from the network. After occurrence of such a reset, the monitoring unit compares the list of all apparatuses on the bus with a list generated and stored before the reset. When determining differences, an alarm is triggered which can be reproduced particularly by means of the apparatuses which are present, such as, for example, televisions and hi-fi equipment.

  • Patent number: 6859644
Abstract: A method of initializing system components of a wireless-controlled lighting system. The system components include a remote control and a plurality of lighting units which communicate with a control master for the system via commonly-received radio communications. In order to become part of the system, each component transmits a respective request for initialization. A local control master for the system responds to each request, in turn, by allocating and transmitting a unique ID code for the requesting component. It then transmits a verify command to the requesting component which, if it has received the ID code, signals the user affirmatively.

  • Patent number: 6858985
Abstract: The invention relates to a low-pressure gas discharge lamp which includes at least one discharge vessel and at least two capacitive coupling-in structures and operates at an operating frequency f. In order to achieve a better efficiency in combination with a small structural volume, a high luminous flux, a low operating voltage, a low electromagnetic emission, a high resistance against switching transients and a long service life for the low-pressure gas discharge lamp, it is proposed to form each capacitive coupling-in structure from at least one dielectric having a thickness d and a dielectric constant ?, each dielectric being subject to the condition d/(f.?)<10?8 cm.s. A substantially larger amount of light can thus be generated per lamp length (lumen/cm).

  • Patent number: 6858793
Abstract: An EMI suppression plate surrounds a galvanically isolated connector at the opening in a chassis that is provided for the connector. The plate is configured to provide an immediate high frequency coupling to the chassis ground. The plate comprises a circuit board that includes two conductors that are coupled by one or more capacitors. One conductor is in contact with an outer shell of the connector, and the other conductor is in contact with the chassis ground. By providing a high frequency coupling between the connector and chassis at the location of the connector opening on the chassis, the ground current path between the connector and chassis ground is minimized.

  • Patent number: 6859903
Abstract: Bits in a first binary signal are compared with one or more first binary patterns. For each first binary patterns, if the comparison meets a predetermined criteria for the first binary pattern, than an evaluation value is calculated for that first binary pattern and for one or more secondary binary patterns that correspond to that first binary pattern, the evaluation value indicating the likelihood that each respective binary pattern corresponds with a portion of a run length limited binary signal represented by the bits of the first binary signal. The first binary signal is corrected to correspond with the binary pattern that was determined most likely to be a portion of the run length limited binary signal.
