Abstract: Hydrophilic layers are made to adhere to dimensionally stable polyester film supports by applying to an unstretched or only longitudinally stretched polyester film an adhesive layer from an aqueous coating composition comprising a chlorine-containing copolymer formed of 45 to 99.5 % by weight of at least one of the monomers vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride, 0.5 to 10 % by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or of N-vinyl pyrrolidone, and 0 to 54.5 % by weight of at least one monomer taken from acrylamides, methacrylamides, esters of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and maleic acid, and N-alkyl maleimides. Immediately thereafter, without drying of the adhesive layer, a subbing layer is applied thereto from an aqueous gelatin solution comprising a plasticizer for the gelatin. After drying of the two layers, they are biaxially or transversally stretched together with the polyester film support, and heat-setted. Finally a hydrophilic layer is applied to the subbing layer.

Abstract: The invention is for an improved process for chemically forming a protective, color receptive coating on the surface of aluminum. The aluminum may be aluminum parts or substrates coated with a layer of aluminum. Absent conventional steps such as water rinses and the like, the process comprises cleaning the aluminum surface to the extent necessary, including desmutting, and contacting the part with a spray comprising an aqueous alkaline solution of a ferricyanide compound, with or without added oxygen, for a time sufficient to form the coating. The treatment is believed to be a chemical oxidizing step similar to the formation of an oxide film electrically using a conventional anodizing process.

Abstract: In purifying a normally solid organic peroxide by heating an aqueous suspension of the organic peroxide in an impure state to a temperature above the melting point of the peroxide for converting the suspension to an aqueous emulsion and then separating the resulting aqueous and liquid peroxide phases so that the separated peroxide phase can be solidified by cooling; the heating of the aqueous suspension is effected by injecting finely divided steam therein during its continuous transport in one or more paths leading to the separator for obtaining complete melting immediately prior to entry of the emulsion into the separator without substantial decomposition of the organic peroxide.
Abstract: Images of fusible toner particles on flexible sheet material, such as applied to paper sheets in electrostatic photocopying machines, are fixed to the material by feeding it through a heating zone in which the particles are softened without fusing them and then passing the material through the nip between smooth rigid pressure roller surfaces which are constantly pressed together under a force sufficiently great to join the heated toner particles superficially one to another and to the sheet structure without forming them into brittle resinous films. An apparatus for carrying out the fixing comprises a set of smooth rigid feed rollers constantly pressed together, preferably by structures like those used for the pressure rollers, under a selected pressure suited for advancing the material into and through a radiant heating zone at a constant speed and thence into the nip of the pressure rollers which are driven at the same peripheral speed.
