Abstract: A method for measuring the concentration of an anionically charged polymer in an aqueous solution is described and claimed. The method requires a reagent solution that is also described and claimed. The reagent solution comprises water, Nile Blue Dye and chelant, with the chelant being selected from the group consisting of the alkali metal or ammonium salts of phosphonobutane tricarboxylic acid. The method involves using absorbance measurements to determine the amount of anionically charged polymer present in an aqueous sample. The method is very rapid and thus is very useful under field conditions.
Abstract: A method of separating solids and preventing foaming in an industrial water system comprising adding to fluids in the industrial water system an effective amount of a low foaming latex polymer prepared using a tallow amine ethoxylate/polyoxyethylene oleyl ether emulsifier.

Abstract: Anionic nanocomposites for use as retention and drainage aids in papermaking are prepared by adding an anionic polyelectrolyte to a sodium silicate solution and then combining the sodium silicate and polyelectrolyte solution with silicic acid.
Abstract: New and improved polyamino acid polymers and derivatized polyamino acid polymers are provided. Relatively high molecular weight poly(succinimides) are prepared by solid phase polymerization of aspartic acid or glutamic acid in the presence of a super phosphoric acid catalyst. The poly(succinimides) may be hydrolyzed to provide biodegradable polyaspartic acid or polyglutamic acid homopolymer having weight average molecular weights ≧70,000. Higher molecular weight, water soluble, cross-liked polyamino acid polymers and gels are also provided. In a preferred embodiment, the poly(succinimides) are derivatized in aqueous media to provide storage stable, substantially linear, biodegradable polyamino acid polymers having pendant hydroxyl, ether, hydroxyalkylaminoalkyl, hydroxyalkoxyalkyl, carboxyl, sulfonoalkyl and/or phosphonoalkyl functionalities. The polymers are useful as chelants in various water treatment applications.
Abstract: A method for the removal of metal cyanides or oxoanions from aqueous streams such as waste water streams with compounds containing 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane. Preferred compounds are polymers formed by free radical polymerization of N-4-vinyl benzyl-N1-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane dichloride (VBBD) such as copolymers poly (VBBD/acrylamide) and poly (VBBD/dimethyl amino ethyl acrylate benzyl chloride quaternary salt. Poly(1,4-dimethylbenzyl-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane dichloride) for the same purposes is also disclosed.
Abstract: This invention provides a composition and a method of using the composition for dispersing wax and improving the pour point of lubricating oils. The composition comprises an esterified styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer and an esterified alpha-olefin maleic anhydride copolymer.
Abstract: The invention is a method for clarifying, dewatering or improving retention and drainage of industrial waste water or paper furnish with an effective amount of at least one dispersion of a water soluble cationic polymer flocculant wherein the improvement comprises the addition of said polymer which has a concentration of at least twenty five percent to said waste water or paper furnish. The industrial waste is preferably food processing waste water, oily waste water, paper mill waste water and inorganic contaminated waste water. The paper furnish may be an aqueous cellulosic suspension.

Abstract: An improved method for separating electrically conductive components of an ore or mineral sand from electrically non-conductive components of the ore or mineral sand is disclosed which includes processing the ore, adding a polymer, such as an anionic polymer, to the processed ore, drying the polymer and ore, and then feeding the ore and polymer through an electrostatic separator. The addition of the anionic polymer to the processed ore increases the efficiency of the electrostatic separation process.
Abstract: Stable biocide formulations containing oxidizing bromine are provided for biofouling control in industrial water systems. The formulations contain at least one stable oxidizing bromine compound that is prepared from at least one oxidizing chemical reagent, at least one bromine source and at least one bromine or halogen stabilizer. The resulting products are a mixture of stable oxidizing bromine compounds that can be used as a biocide in an industrial water system.

Abstract: An improved process for inhibiting calcium carbonate scaling in aqueous systems such as that employed in the kraft process for the production of wood pulp. Abstract: A system and method for the detection and removal of copper from wastewater streams from semiconductor or printed circuit board manufacturing is described and claimed. The detection system and method involve the addition of a reagent that reacts with copper to quench the fluorophore present, with the decrease in fluorescence being detected by a fluorometer. The reduction of fluorescence is then used to calculate the amount of copper present in the form of Cu+2 ion in the wastewater. The removal system and method involve either the addition of a polymer that reacts with copper to form an insoluble precipitate with said precipitate then being removed by using any technique commonly known in the art; or the use of an ion exchange column to remove the copper from the wastewater stream.

Abstract: The invention is a method for preparing a stabilized aqueous alkali or alkaline earth metal hypobromite solution. The method comprises the steps of:a. Recovering a stabilized aqueous alkali or alkaline earth metal hypobromite solution.

Abstract: A dispersant system useful in the formation of dispersions of water soluble polymers is disclosed. The dispersant system comprises two polymers, the first being a copolymer of diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride with a C.sub.6 to C.sub.20 quaternary ammonium salt of a monomer selected the from the group consisting of dialkylaminoalkylacrylates, dialkylaminoalkylmethacrylates, dialkylaminoalkylacrylamides, and dialkylaminoalky (meth) acrylamides as well as certain alkyl esters of acrylic acid. Abstract: This invention concerns comb-like branched, water-soluble cationic acrylamide copolymers, prepared from 1-40 mole % of a water-soluble cationic prepolymer backbone of formula I--[A--B--NR].sub.n -- Iwhere A is an unsaturated ammonium compound or acrylamide and B--NR-- is selected from the group consisting of olefinically unsaturated, functional amine-group-containing monomers, triethanolamine, and diethanolalkylamine, and the amount of B--NR is 1 mole % to 50 mole % and n represents a degree of polymerization which leads to molecular weights in the range from 1000 to 200,000 g/mole, and 60 to 99 mole % acrylamide by graft polymerization of the acrylamide onto the amine-group-containing cationic prepolymer backbone with a water-in-oil emulsion technique, and the comb-like branched acrylamide copolymers have a molecular weight of >1 million.

Abstract: Improved performance in the phase separation of aqueous brines from hydrocarbons within an electrostatic desalter operation is obtained by the addition to the crude oil emulsions entering the desalter of an effective asphaltene dispersing amount of an alkyl phenol-formaldehyde liquid resin polymer, optionally in the presence of a lipophilic/hydrophilic vinylic polymer. The preferred resin is a nonyl phenol-formaldehyde resin having a molecular weight of from 1,000-20,000, and the preferred vinylic polymer is a copolymer of lauryl (meth)acrylate and hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylate. Best results from the electrostatic desalter are obtained when also using a demulsifier chemical treatment along with the asphaltene dispersing treatments. Desalter efficiency is increased and desalter brine effluent quality is greatly increased.
