  • Patent number: 5501748
Abstract: Procedure for the production of a thixotropic magnesium alloy by adding a grain refiner combined with controlled, rapid solidification with subsequent heating to the two-phase area. It is preferable to use a solidification rate of >1.degree. C./s, more preferably >10.degree. C./s. It is essential that the solidification takes place at such a speed that growth of dendrites is avoided. Heating to the two-phase area is carried out rapidly in 1-30 minutes, preferably 2-5 minutes. By heating an alloy comprising 2-8 weight % Zn, 1.5-5 weight % RE, 0.2-0.8 weight Zr balanced with magnesium to a temperature in the two-phase area after casting, the structure will assume a form in which the .alpha.-phase is globular (RE=rare earth metal). The size of the spheres will be dependent on the temperature and the holding time at that temperature and they will be surrounded by a low-smelting matrix. It is preferable that the alloy has a grain size of not greater than <100 .mu.m, more preferably 50-100 .mu.m.

  • Patent number: 5492207
Abstract: An energy absorbing structure is employed in a front or rear portion of a vehicle body. The structure is in the form of a unitary and one-piece longitudinally extending aluminum or aluminum alloy member that is extruded to have a substantially uniform cross section. The member is subjected to an aging heat treatment operation to impart a material strength to the member. Subsequently, at least one longitudinal zone of the member is subjected to an overaging heat treatment to thereby lower the material strength of such zone. As a result, by the member being subjected to longitudinally differential heat treatment, the member has material strengths differing longitudinal of the member. Upon an impact being imparted to the portion of the vehicle body, a force acting on the member will cause the zone thereof to be subjected to axial compression deformation.

  • Patent number: 5476793
Abstract: Air reactivity, CO.sub.2 and soot index of a carbon product is determined. The air reactivity and CO.sub.2 reactivity of a sample of a carbon product are determined on the basis of the same test of the same sample. Air reactivity is analyzed first and, when such analysis is finished, CO.sub.2 reactivity is automatically analyzed on the same sample. The soot index is determined by collecting and weighing soot dust. A vertical tube furnace includes an inlet for the introduction of gas, and a sample holder which is freely suspended from a weighing device and extends down into the tube furnace. The sample holder is provided with one or more thermocouples for registering temperature of a carbon product.

  • Patent number: 5443102
Abstract: A method for filling an FIBC includes causing particulate material to flow from a container under gravity through a filling duct into a liner of the FIBC. The particulate material is caused to adopt a free fall generally laminar flow stream which over substantially all of its length does not contact the wall of the filling duct. Accordingly formed adjacent such stream is an air passage through which passage at least part of air displaced from the interior of the liner by the particulate material can escape without significantly disrupting the flow of particulate material.

  • Patent number: 5404953
Abstract: A blow-out prevention device shuts off an annulus between a drill column and a well wall by means of an expandable sealing device when an unwanted blow-out of fluid and/or gas takes place from an unstable geological well formation when drilling for oil or gas. When a blow-out takes place, a compressive-pulse code is activated in the inlet of the drill column and is transmitted through the drilling fluid to a pressure sensor which transmits the compressive-pulse code on to a microprocessor (37) which is preprogrammed with the pressure code. If the pressure codes coincide, an electric motor is activated, which, via a set of gears and a nut-and-bolt device, displaces a valve plate axially towards a valve seat. The drilling fluid then flows out through nozzles and causes a large pressure drop which is used to expand the sealing device so that the annulus is shut.

  • Patent number: 5402992
Abstract: Reactive metal granules, especially of magnesium and/or magnesium alloys, are produced directly from molten metal. The metal is fed under pressure to a granulation nozzle which forces the metal to acquire a circular motion of increasing velocity before it reaches the outlet of the nozzle and disintegrates successively into small fragments and droplets. These fragments and droplets are formed in an inactive gas atmosphere in an enclosed system and are thereafter solidified and cooled in a nonoxidizing cooling bath. An apparatus includes a granulation chamber made up of two parts which can be fitted to each other at various positions with an air tight locking system.
