Abstract: The dry oxygen content in the exhaust of an industrial furnace may be controlled to 1% or less by determining one or more of: the temperature of: each or a group of one or more burner (flame); one or more section of the radiant walls adjacent (e.g., within 5 feet of the burner); the temperature gradient across the process coils; the combustion products of one or more burners; the mass flow rate or the volume flow rate of air to each burner (e.g., the pressure drop across the variable forced air aperture ii) comparing the result to said target value; and iii) adjusting either a) the opening of the variable forced air aperture; or b) adjusting the mass flow rate or the volume flow rate of air from said one or more fans.

Abstract: A distributed power supply system and a method for managing such a distributed power supply system is disclosure. The method may include: for each power storage unit i of the plurality of power storage units, determining whether power storage unit i have sufficient status of charge (SOC) based on SOC of the power storage unit i (Ci), and load of the power storage unit i (Li); identifying a set of power storage units that have insufficient SOC; and adjusting output power of the power storage units that have sufficient SOC to provide supplemental power to the set of power storage units that have insufficient SOC.
Abstract: A disposable urea sensor has a laminated body having a fluid sample inlet end and an electrical contact end, a fluid sample inlet, a substantially flat sample chamber in communication between the fluid sample inlet and a vent opening, the sample chamber being adapted to collect a fluid sample through the fluid sample inlet, a working electrode and a reference electrode within the sample chamber, and a reagent matrix disposed on the working electrode wherein the reagent matrix contains urease.

Abstract: This invention discloses a leak proof disposable container, comprising of a bottom portion composed of expandable thermoplastic resin beads and a lidding film, for containing non-carbonated drinks or food products that do not require heating prior to consumption. The inventive container eliminates the use of polypropylene and polystyrene snap-on lids currently used for cups and containers. The snap-on lid is replaced with a thermoplastic lidding film, a leak proof seal is formed between the lidding film and upper flange of the bottom portion. Replacement of the snap-on lid with lidding film, reduces the weight of the disposable lidding material by 74 percent. Through the appropriate selection of materials, one can produce a leak proof container that is 100 percent recyclable under the #6 PS (polystyrene) symbol.

Abstract: TENS can be applied to the TMJ of an athlete for a period of time to deprogram muscles. After TENS, a desired position of the lower jaw relative to the upper jaw can be determined and recorded. The desired position can be a physiological resting position, or a performance position in which the lower jaw is positioned anteriorly relative to the physiological resting position. A mouthpiece can be prepared including bite portions configured to substantially space apart and position the jaws according to the desired position, and substantially prevent movement of the lower jaw relative to the upper jaw. A connecting portion connects the bite portions within the mouth, and may extend labially along the anterior teeth and associated gum region of the lower jaw, and may be sized and shaped to substantially lie out of the way so as to not impede speech of the athlete.

Abstract: A spacing member can be positioned between teeth of the athlete to obtain a desired position between the upper and lower jaw. At least one bite registration can be recorded while the lower jaw is in the desired position. The desired position can range from the physiological resting position, to a performance position, in which the lower jaw is positioned anteriorly in relation to the physiological resting position. The mouthpiece can be formed to include a pair of bite portions configured to substantially space apart and position the jaws generally according to the desired position, and a connecting portion can connect the bite portions within the mouth. The connecting portion may extend labially along the anterior teeth and associated gum region of the lower jaw, and may be sized and shaped to substantially lie out of the way so as to not impede speech of the athlete.

Abstract: A system for reducing the effects of a blast wave includes armor plating configured to face a supersonic blast wave. The armor plating has a surface consisting of alternating tall and short peaks with valleys between the peaks. The peaks and valleys are positioned such that the supersonic blast wave reflects from the side surfaces of the tall peaks as a regular reflection that at least partially suppresses Mach reflection of the supersonic wave caused by the short peaks and the valleys. The surface may also be designed to not trap reflected waves. The valleys can be parabolic shaped to deflect and/or dissipate transonic flow that follows the blast wave front.
Abstract: A method for admitting applicants into an academic institution can include the steps of: compiling a list of standardized test takers who have applied for admission to at least one academic institution, but have not received an offer of admission to any one of the at least one academic institutions; conditionally admitting selected ones of the test takers to an abbreviated academic program; subjecting the conditionally admitted test takers to at least one examination during the abbreviated academic program, each conditionally admitted test taker achieving a score on the at least one examination; and, admitting into the academic institution those conditionally admitted test takers who achieve a score on said at least one examination which satisfies an admissions criteria.
Abstract: A method of authenticating a user includes using at least one computer and connected scanner to obtain biometric measurements of a plurality of biometric parameters of the user. The parameters are stored as templates for comparison, as well as a sequence in which the plurality of biometric parameters are to be scanned in order to perform a valid authentication. Authentication is determined by comparing each biometric parameter submitted with the stored biometric templates, to determine if each biometric parameter matches a stored template. In addition, the sequence with which each matched template was presented is identified, and this sequence is compared with the stored sequence. If a predetermined number of biometric parameters match, and a predetermined number of elements in a sequence match, the user is authenticated.
