  • Patent number: 4454436
Abstract: There is provided a magneto-hydrodynamic generator which utilizes pulsating combustion. The generator has a central combustion chamber and a radial expansion chamber annularly surrounding the combustion chamber and communicating with it. The expansion chamber is defined between two opposing walls. A combustible fuel mixture is introduced into the combustion chamber and pulsating combustion is initiated in the combustion chamber, so that gas flow in the expansion chamber fluctuates with time. Means are provided for ionizing gas in the expansion chamber, and further means are provided for applying an external magnetic field to the expansion chamber. Finally, electrically conductive means are provided for extracting electrical power from the ionized fluctuating gas flow in the expansion chamber.

  • Patent number: 4451871
Abstract: A relatively light weight, low cost compact safety light which may be worn or carried by athletes such as joggers, runners, cyclists, etc. is provided. The safety light is comprised of a light source coupleable to a battery power supply by a position sensitive switch which is sensitive to movement of the athlete and provides intermittent bursts of light which are highly visible to oncoming cars. In one embodiment, the light source is comprised of a light emitting diode coupled to one or more pen light batteries by a position sensitive switch such as a mercury switch. One or more lense members are provided to increase the visibility of the light generated by the light source. A first reflective means located within the safety light housing is utilized to reflect the light generated by the light source through the lense member while a second reflective means located on the outside of the housing provides additional reflectivity for the light generated by oncoming cars.

  • Patent number: 4449364
Abstract: A sluing mechanism driven by one or more electric or hydraulic motors, for excavating or bulk handling machines comprises a pivotable discharger boom mounted on a rotary support or turntable, and a coaxially pivotable superstructure carrying further equipment. The sluing drives of the two coaxially pivotable parts of the machine are connected to each other in such a way that upon pivoting the superstructure, the discharger boom does not follow this pivotal motion. The sluing drive of the discharge boom is designed as a superposed gear and connected to a drive motor for separately sluing the discharger boom. The turntable is provided with a second discharger sluing gear which is driven by a motor having a weaker characteristic than the drive motor or motors for sluing the superstructure. The characteristic of the motor driving the second discharger sluing gear may be adjustable.

  • Patent number: 4450176
Abstract: A bland and nutritive soybean food product is produced by a process involving the steps of heating a proteinaceous soybean material with steam to preferably 220.degree. F. and subjecting the proteinaceous soybean material to lower alcohol vapors. Initially, the soybean material is placed in a closed vessel and the alcohol is added to the soybean material in a preferred weight ratio of approximately 9 pounds alcohol to 60 pounds soybean material along with a small quantity of water. The vessel has agitators that agitate the soybean material sufficiently to "fluidize" the material within the vessel. Steam is injected into the vessel and when the temperature of the soybean material preferably reaches 220.degree. F., the steam is stopped and the proteinaceous soybean material is kept at that temperature in the closed vessel for at least thirty minutes.

  • Patent number: 4447073
Abstract: An in-arm hydropneumatic suspension system includes a road wheel spindle connected to a vehicle hull. A road wheel arm has a spindle housing on one end supported by complementary tapered roller bearings for oscillation on the spindle; the opposite end of the road wheel arm defines an air spring housing for air spring means supporting the sprung mass of the vehicle. Damper components of the suspension unit are located remotely of the air spring at a location in the spindle housing so as to isolate the air spring operation from damper generated heat and wherein damper generated heat is dissipated from crankcase oil in the spindle housing directly to the hull.

  • Patent number: 4445836
Abstract: Provided is a method and apparatus for molding and winding in a continuous operation a string of molded items. The molded items of the string or chain are molded in spaced relationship to one another and are connected by molded scrap connectors. The string of molded items is then advanced until only a trailing connector of the last molded item extends into the mold cavity. Upon subsequent molding operation, therefore, the subsequent molded item is molded integral with the existing string of molded items. The continuous string of molded items is kept under constant tension and wound periodically into a coil. The molding, advancing, tensioning and winding operations are all integrated and synchronized in order to provide a wound package which greatly facilitates its use in an automatic assembly operation.

  • Patent number: 4443749
Abstract: An AC split-phase induction motor has a two-pole run winding, a four-pole run winding and a separate start or phase winding. The two-pole winding is connected directly to a corresponding first power terminal. The second run winding is connected to a second power terminal by a solid state gated run switch having a turn-on gate. The start winding is connected in circuit in series with a solid state gated start switch connected to the first power terminal and having a gate connected to a second power terminal. A centrifugal switch connects the first and second power terminals. The gate of the run switch is connected to the start winding circuit and includes connecting Diac and resistance elements to actuate the run switch only in response to a power connection to the second power terminal and the opening of the centrifugal switch. In operation, the motor always starts with the two-pole run winding and the start winding in the circuit. At switching speed, the start switch disconnects the start winding.

  • Patent number: 4443681
Abstract: A control system for electronic discharge machining includes an automatic relay control and a current cutoff control of particular interest. The automatic relay control controls the energy level of machining pulses as a step function of machining cycle period by cutting in or out resistors in a power circuit through the machining gap. Higher frequency pulses are held to a lower current level to avoid power transistor overload. The relay control circuit includes multivibrators, energized at progressively higher values of pulse period by the counters, and an output circuit for each multivibrator which controls one of the relays which vary the gap circuit resistance. The relay control circuit also includes a threshold responsive circuit which senses any change in the several relay controlling output signals and acts to interrupt machining pulses briefly to allow time for relay operation.
