  • Patent number: 5544398
Abstract: A full metal jacket hollow point bullet is disclosed which has a portion of the jacket extending within the hollow open front end of the bullet. The portion of the jacket in the hollow front end has a plurality of radial slits and reinforced pointed prongs therebetween. A rearwardly extending completely empty blind bore extends from the tips of the prongs axially rearwardly into the bullet core. The base of each of the prongs is reinforced at the mouth of the front end by a fillet on each side between the ogive portion of the jacket and the base of the prong in the hollow front end. These prongs project generally radially outward upon upset of the bullet in soft tissue after passing through barrier materials such as clothing and deer hide. The jacket has a coating of copper oxide on its inner and outer surfaces which bonds the soft lead core to the jacket and minimizes lead wash.

  • Patent number: 5545272
Abstract: There is provided a gas generating composition consisting essentially of a mixture of nitroguanidine and phase stabilized ammonium nitrate. When the ammonium nitrate is phase stabilized with from about 7% to about 20%, by weight, of a potassium salt, the mixture is structurally and volumetrically stable over typical automotive operating temperatures and has a melting temperature in excess of 100.degree. C. The mixture generates large volumes of nitrogen and carbon dioxide when ignited with minimal generation of solids or toxic gases and is particularly useful as an inflating medium for automobile airbags.

  • Patent number: 5542354
Abstract: A segmenting warhead projectile has a fore section integral with an aft section. A mid section is disposed between the fore section and the aft section. Up range of a target, an explosive contained within the mid section is detonated separating the fore section from the aft section. When a desired separation distance is achieved, explosives contained within the fore and aft sections detonate, fragmenting the housing of the sections. The fragmentation patterns of the two sections overlap, providing a high dispersion of fragmentation segments along the line of flight compensating for range errors.

  • Patent number: 5519605
Abstract: A model predictive control apparatus and method for controlling the operation of a process having a process input signal and a process output signal, which includes determining a predicted process output signal at a future steady state condition according to a process model, determining a steady state error signal according to the difference between the predicted process output signal and a desired set point signal, and determining a set of future process input change signals required to correct for the estimated steady state error by providing at least one step response in the process output at a future time. The next net process input change is then applied according to the sum of the currently determined first element of the set of future process input change signals summed with any future process input change signals that were previously calculated for the next process input change signal that is calculated according to this method. The model is expressed in velocity form.

  • Patent number: 5513770
Abstract: An insert is positioned in the upper end of a pail, which pail contains a liquid. The insert blocks entry of a child's head into the pail. The insert is screwed into the upper end of the pail. Mating locking detents are provided on the pail and on the insert so that the insert, once screwed into the pail, cannot be thereafter unscrewed from the pail. The insert allows ready withdrawal of the liquid from the pail. A child in the vicinity of a pail equipped with the aforesaid insert is protected from drowning in a liquid contained in the pail because insert prevents a child from accidentally, or intentionally, inserting his or her head into the pail.

  • Patent number: 5513087
Abstract: There is disclosed a power supply for igniting and sustaining an electric arc in an arcjet thruster. The power supply is capable of delivering a short duration, high voltage pulse for igniting the arc and then providing a continuous low voltage, high amperage current for sustaining the arc. A circuit in the power supply includes the combination of a low impedance inductor and a high impedance inductor. High voltage is blocked by the high impedance inductor for initiating the arc. As current begins to flow, the high impedance inductor magnetically saturates and the arc sustaining current flows through the low impedance inductor.
