Abstract: The present invention relates to a multi-step process for producing HAN that is free of ammonium nitrate. The process comprises the steps of: (a) stripping ammonia from an ammonia-containing, aqueous hydroxylamine solution having a hydroxylamine concentration of at least 10% by weight based upon the weight of the hydroxylamine solution, by contacting the ammonia-containing hydroxylamine solution with a stripping agent selected from the group consisting of inert gases and steam to provide an ammonia-free, aqueous hydroxylamine solution, and (b) reacting the ammonia-free, aqueous hydroxylamine solution with aqueous nitric acid having an acid concentration of at least about 0.1%, preferably at least about 20%, based upon the weight of the aqueous nitric acid, to produce ammonium nitrate-free HAN. In another process embodiment of the invention, the above-described ammonia stripping step is not required, and the hydroxylamine concentration is at least about 0.

Abstract: There is provided a base for an electronic package. The base includes a peripheral portion for a polymer adhesive and a central portion for one or more semiconductor devices. A lead support is adjacent the substrate and located between the peripheral portion and the central portion. When a polymer adhesive bonds a leadframe to the package base, the lead support prevents deflection of the inner lead tips.

Abstract: A metallic strip having at least one surface enhanced with a texture pattern is formed into a welded tube. A fin insert shapes the edges of the metallic strip prior to welding and minimizes the formation of a protruding weld bead. The longitudinally running edges of the metallic strip adjacent to the enhancement are angled so that the unenhanced portions of the strip edges contact during welding. By having the unenhanced portions contact, fluctuations in metal volume during welding are reduced. This reduces weld instability.
Abstract: There is disclosed an aqueous chemical solution that consists essentially of zinc ions, a source of hydroxides, and silicon ions. The ratio of silicon to zinc (Si:Zn) is, by weight from about 1:5 to about 1:250. Within the ratio range, the silicon ions inhibit precipitation of zinc from the chemical solution. This is particularly useful when the chemical solution is an electrolyte for the deposition of zinc or a zinc containing compound onto a metallic structure where a critical zinc content must be maintained to impart adequate adhesion of a coated substrate to a polymer adhesive.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for monitoring the product quality of chlorine in which a sample stream of chlorine is taken from a chlorine stream and a portion of the sample stream is passed to one of three different analyzers for detection of various contaminants. A common data acquisition network receives data from each analyzer for integration and output. The analyzers include a bromine in chlorine analyzer, a non-condensable gas in chlorine analyzer, and a halocarbon in chlorine analyzer.
Abstract: A method of generating high-power microwaves from a compact source is disclosed by which a transmission line cavity resonator is charged to a high voltage and an electrical switch in the resonator is closed very quickly to produce subnanosecond current risetime and a resultant high-power microwave pulse. Structure to accomplish the method is also disclosed.
Abstract: Spray cast copper-manganese-zirconium alloys are disclosed. In one embodiment, the alloy is spray cast in nitrogen and contains from about 1 ppm to about 20 ppm of dissolved nitrogen. In a second embodiment, the alloy contains an addition selected from the group consisting of chromium, titanium, erbium and mixtures thereof. The alloys are useful for sound damping as the combination of zirconium and the addition inhibits degradation of the specific damping capacity of the alloy.

Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the catalytic decomposition of HAN-based monopropellants using a platinum group or transition metal group catalyst that is preferably a supported metal catalyst and/or wire mesh/expanded metal mesh catalyst for the purpose of generating hot gases. These gases are suitably employed for driving a turbine, vane or piston motor, for rocket propulsion or as a convenient and environmentally acceptable means of disposal of surplus propellants or other waste products containing HAN. The HAN-based propellants have low or substantially no volatility and are safer to use than other monopropellants currently used for rocket propulsion or shaft horsepower auxiliary power units.
Abstract: There are disclosed processing methods to improve the properties of copper base alloys containing chromium and zirconium. One method of processing results in a copper alloy having high strength and high electrical conductivity. A second method of processing results in a copper alloy with even higher strength and a minimal reduction in electrical conductivity. While a third method of processing results in a copper alloy having improved bend formability.
Abstract: There is provided a two-stage system for expelling a liquid fuel component from a main fuel tank to a rocket engine. A pressurized high vapor pressure liquid combined with the vapor of that liquid expel a desired volume of a gas forming liquid from a first stage fuel tank. A gas generator converts this liquid to a gas that expels a desired quantity of fuel from the main fuel tank. The two-stage system is at an equilibrium pressure. The only active control required for the system is a controller to meter the flow of fuel from the main fuel tank to the engine. The pressure drop in the system resulting from the discharge of fuel causes the high vapor pressure liquid to partially evaporate charging more gas into the system until equilibrium is achieved again.
Abstract: There are provided polymer plugs for sealing the vent hole of an adhesively sealed electronic package. The polymer vent hole plug is selected to be either an ultraviolet curable polymer or a thermosetting polymer resin. One effective vent hole plug is a cylindrical plug having a diameter under 1.4 millimeters formed from a UV-curable epoxy.

Abstract: A process for gas phase delignifying wood pulp comprising: contacting wood pulp in the first stage of pulp bleaching with chlorine dioxide-containing gas to delignify said wood pulp; wherein(a) said wood pulp has a consistency of at least about 15 percent;(b) said chlorine dioxide-containing gas contains less than about 3% by weight chlorine gas, based on the weight of chlorine dioxide in said gas; and(c) said contacting is conducted at a subatmospheric pressure from about 15 to about 750 mm Hg. This process reduces the formation of chloroform and significantly reduces the amounts of toxic by-products such as dioxin and other organic chlorides. These undesirable by-products, collectively identified as absorbable organic halides (AOX), require effluents from pulp bleaching processes to undergo expensive treatment methods to eliminate AOX's prior to discharges to sewers. The effluent discharge from this process generally has less than 2.0 kg adsorbed organic halides (AOX) per ton of wood pulp.
