  • Patent number: 8408811
Abstract: Fiber optic connectors having an optical fiber stub that is fusion-spliced for optical connection and related tools for the fiber optic connectors are disclosed. Specifically, the connector assembly for fusion-splicing includes a fiber optic connector having an optic fiber stub and a boot attachable to the fiber optic connector. The boot is configured to transfer the majority of the axial force from the fiber optic cable to the fiber optic connector. Specifically, a splice housing for housing the fusion splice is configured for attachment to an end of the boot for transferring forces from the fiber optic cable to the boot. Consequently, the boot preferably has an extensibility of less than about 2 millimeters under an axial load of about fifteen pounds to inhibit excess forces from acting on the optical fiber stub.

  • Patent number: 8412686
Abstract: A system may configure a safety-tag that indicates whether a private data area is safe to preserve. During operation, the system receives a file with a private data area. Specifically, in one embodiment, the private data area is contained within an Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) MakerNote tag, which allows makers of EXIF writers to record any desired information. Next, the system determines whether the private data area is safe to preserve. If the private data area is safe to preserve, the system configures a safety-tag to indicate that the private data area is safe to preserve. Otherwise, if the private data area is not safe to preserve, the system configures the safety-tag to indicate that the private data is not safe to preserve. Specifically, in one embodiment, the safety-tag is a Digital Negative (DNG) MakerNoteSafety tag.

  • Patent number: 8411961
Abstract: Method and apparatus for image feature matching in automatic image stitching processes. Embodiments may provide a computer-implemented method for performing a portion of an automatic image stitching process where feature correspondences are established between pairs of images. In embodiments, a computer-implemented image feature matching component may use a combination of one or more of heuristic techniques, information obtained from the user, file information related to the component images, and/or information obtained from previous feature matching iterations to narrow the number of images that are in a subset of component images to be compared for any given component image, and thus to narrow the number of pairs of component images on which image feature comparisons are performed.

  • Patent number: 8410394
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing substrate edges is disclosed that overcomes the limitations of conventional edge processing methods and systems used in semiconductor manufacturing. The edge processing method and apparatus of this invention includes a laser and optical system to direct a beam of radiation onto a rotating substrate supported by a chuck. The optical system accurately and precisely directs the beam to remove or transform organic or inorganic films, film stacks, residues, or particles, in atmosphere, from the top edge, top bevel, apex, bottom bevel, and bottom edge of the substrate in a single process step. An optional gas injector system directs gas onto the substrate edge to aid in the reaction. Reaction by-products are removed by means of an exhaust tube enveloping the reaction site. This invention permits precise control of an edge exclusion width, resulting in an increase in the number of usable die on a wafer.

  • Patent number: 8411990
Abstract: Various embodiments of a system and methods for decomposing an image into reflectance and shading components are described. An image decomposition module may represent an image as a product of the reflectance and shading components of the image. Data representing the image may be transformed into an image gradient containing both reflectance and shading component gradients. A normal vector perpendicular to the direction of the reflectance component gradient may be determined, based on a difference between the color channels of the image gradient. The image gradient may be modified according to the normal vector to eliminate the reflectance component gradient. The shading component gradient may be determined from the modified image gradient. The shading component gradient may be transformed into the shading component. The reflectance component may be determined by substituting the shading component into the representation of the image which is a product of the reflectance and shading components.

  • Patent number: 8412046
Abstract: A system and method for in-service optical dispersion determination are provided. Optical dispersion is determined by splitting a first optical signal into two components, introducing a time delay between the two components such that corresponding pulses of the two components partially overlap, combining the two components to generate a combined optical signal comprising a first component and a second component, determining power of the combined optical signal while applying a plurality of dispersion compensation values, in order to determine a dispersion compensation value that results in a minimum detected power of the combined optical signal. Polarization Mode Dispersion is determined by adjusting the time delay that is introduced until the power of the combined optical signal is substantially equal for all of the plurality of dispersion compensation values.

  • Patent number: 8412332
Abstract: An implantable system and method for deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatments. The implantable system is sufficiently small and self-contained to enable implantation of the entire system within the brain, or optionally within the brain and the surrounding tissue. The system comprises an implantable inductor on which a voltage is induced when subjected to an electromagnetic field, and an implantable device comprising a housing, stimulating elements at an exterior surface of the housing, and electronics within the housing and electrically connected to the implantable inductor. The electronics produces a brain-stimulating current from the voltage induced on the implantable inductor and then delivers the brain-stimulating current to the stimulating elements. Deep brain stimulation is performed by subjecting the inductor to an electromagnetic field to induce a voltage on the inductor that powers the electronics to produce and deliver the brain-stimulating current to the stimulating elements.

  • Patent number: 8408049
Abstract: An apparatus and method to determine fractions of various phases in a multiphase fluid. The apparatus includes main body including an interior configured receive a multiphase fluid and an exterior. The apparatus senses fluid pressure of multiphase fluid received in the interior and senses a fluid temperature of the multiphase fluid. The apparatus transmits an ultrasonic wave into the fluid and detects the transmitted wave to determine its velocity and attenuation. The apparatus may adjust the determined velocity and attenuation based on the temperature and pressure of the fluid to compensate for a difference between the sensed temperature and pressure and a standard temperature and pressure. The apparatus determines a gas fraction, water fraction, and a non-water fluid fraction of the multiphase fluid based on the sensed fluid pressure, the sensed fluid temperature, and the velocity and attenuation of the ultrasonic wave in the multiphase fluid.
