Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining transmission parameters while initializing a communication link. An initiating communication device includes a parameter indicating device, a measurement receiving section, a parameter receiving device, a measurement transmission section, and a selecting device. The parameter indicating device transmits first transmission parameters that can be used by a responding communication device. In response to the transmitted first transmission parameters, the measurement receiving section receives first signals issued by the responding communication device. The parameter receiving device receives second transmission parameters that are issued by the responding communication device. The measurement transmission section functions to transmit second signals to the responding communication device, in response to the received second transmission parameters.

Abstract: A multi-function system boots up a WWW server in which an applet is embedded. When a browser, which is executed on PCs, requests an HTTP file, the multi-function system transfers the HTML file and the applet. The browser executes the applet. The applet opens a TCP socket and starts communications between the multi-function and the applet. A status information obtaining section of the multi-function system obtains a status of each section of the multi-function system in response to a request from the applet, and the multi-function system notifies the applet of status information. The applet displays the status of each section. This makes it possible to send notification of the status of each section to PCs.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for enabling data communication. The quality of a communication channel is determined using line probing techniques. In addition, capabilities of the communication devices are exchanged between a central location and a remote location. Based upon the quality of the communication channel, and the capabilities of the communication channel, an appropriate communication standard is selected.

Abstract: A home network gateway apparatus controls information of home network devices connected to an IEEE 1394 bus in a unified manner in a household. When a device is connected to the home network, the home network gateway apparatus of the present invention acquires information of each device and posts the information on a built-in WWW server in a list menu format. The user can remotely control home network devices individually from an apparatus on another network via the list menu.

Abstract: In a facsimile communication method for transmitting facsimile data to a reception terminal from a facsimile machine via a communication network, a transmission process in the facsimile machine includes the following steps: (a) a step of saving image data of an original to be transmitted as facsimile data in a storage; (b) a step of generating access information data for access to the image data, saved in the storage, from the reception terminal via the transmission network; (c) a step of sending the access information data to the reception terminal by an e-mail; and (d) a step of transmitting the image data in the storage to the reception terminal from the facsimile machine by a communication protocol of a point-to-point data transfer form upon reception of an access request for the image data from the reception terminal.

Abstract: A network system is provided that connects, on the network, a plurality of devices having document processing functions, a plurality of clients instructing the devices on necessary job executions, and a server. The server includes a collection recorder that collects information of a job executed by a device to record the information as job data, and a count processor that counts jobs according to count parameters set by a client. A browser installed to the client can select a count parameter, direct the count process, and view the count results generated by the count process.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process cartridge includes a first unit and a second unit separable (detachable) from the first unit. The first unit includes a photosensitive member, a developing unit that forms an image on the photosensitive member, and a cleaning unit that collects residual toner from the photosensitive member. The second unit includes a toner hopper unit that supplies toner on the photosensitive member, and a waste toner box that stores the collected residual toner. The developing unit engages with the toner hopper unit so as to engage the first unit with the second unit.

Abstract: An arithmetic decoding apparatus is provided that carries out complete pipeline processing. Fluctuations in the pipeline caused by occurrence of the normalization are resolved by using a future-predicted Qe memory. In coding multi-valued images, common contexts are generated without distinguishing between AC and DC components of DCT coefficients.

Abstract: In a distribution server of a distribution server system according to the present invention, menu information, including a menu item name and information to execute a job related to the menu item name, is generated based on display capability information and job capability information of each multifunction apparatus. The generated menu information is stored in a hard disk. When the multifunction apparatus requests for the menu information, the distribution server retrieves the information from the hard disk and delivers the same to the requesting multifunction apparatus via a network. The display capability information and job capability information of the multifunction apparatus is displayed so that personalized menu information can be generated, by a user, based on a menu item name (set within the range of the display capability) and a function (selected from the job capability).

Abstract: Method and apparatus for minimizing a retransmission of messages when an error message is received during a communication handshaking procedure. A receiver, that detects an error message during the communication handshaking procedure, receives messages from a communication apparatus. When the receiver detects the error message, a retransmission requester transmits a retransmission request message to the communication apparatus.

Abstract: A data receiving station inserts a polling request identifier and the request file number in a user area of a mail address of <forward-path> in a RCPT command to transmit according to SMTP. A network facsimile apparatus recognizes the polling request identifier and the request file number from the received <forward-path> to decide. When the polling request is present, the network facsimile apparatus transmits the request file data corresponding to the request file number to the data receiving station. The internet facsimile apparatus thus transmits stored image data to the data receiving station according to a request from the data receiving station. It is thereby possible to perform a polling communication.

Abstract: An Internet communication control apparatus and its transmission control method is provided, to which communication terminals such as facsimile apparatuses and/or telephones are connected, that is connected to the Internet to perform transmission/reception with other communication terminals. When an off-hook state of a connected communication terminal is detected upon transmitting, a setting for dial tone signal reception is prepared, and the received signals are converted to a destination number. By checking the corresponding table, the destination number is converted into a destination address, and according to the content of the table, whether the communication is for facsimile transmission or telephone call is determined. According to the result of the determination, a facsimile process or telephone process is selectively performed so that the transmission operation does not seem abnormal and complicated.

Abstract: A communication apparatus that is selectively connected to a central communication apparatus. A transmitter associated with the communication apparatus transmits a MR signal to the central communication apparatus. The MR signal requests the central communication apparatus to transmit a MS signal back to the communication apparatus designating a particular communication mode to be used between the communication apparatus and the central communication apparatus. In response to the received MS signal, the transmitter transmits an ACK signal or a NACK signal to the central communication apparatus.

Abstract: A central communication apparatus that minimizes a retransmission of messages when an error message is received during a communication handshaking procedure. A receiver receives messages from a remote communication terminal during the communication handshaking procedure to detect whether an error message exists. If a predetermined number of error messages are detected by the receiver, a communication terminating section terminates a communication session.

Abstract: A communications device for sending image data through E-mail includes: an image data creator, an image data sending system that sends the image data according to an E-mail message transfer protocol, a register for registering multiple identifications of a transmitter, and a sending system that selects at least one identification of the transmitter. When the image data is sent by E-mail over the Internet, an identification of the transmitter can be set at a transmitter side depending on an operator's intention and a recipient can identify a transmitter before opening a file attached to received data. When the recipient replies to the mail with a reply finction of a mail browsing software, the reply mail can reach an intended address.

Abstract: A communication apparatus that is selectively connected to a central communication apparatus. The communication apparatus transmits a CLR signal to the central communication apparatus that indicates a capabilities list of the communication apparatus, and also requests that the central communication apparatus transmit a capabilities list of the central communication apparatus to the communication apparatus. Upon receipt of a CL signal from the central communication apparatus that indicates a capabilities list of the central communication apparatus, the communication apparatus transmits an ACK signal or a MS signal to the central communication apparatus that designates a particular communication mode.

Abstract: A communication terminal apparatus includes a communication section that controls communication to a destination and a browser that analyzes hypertexts, and displays an image in accordance with the analyzed hypertexts on a display, the image having at least an input field. Hardware keys are configured to input numbers and characters, and are selectively operable in a first mode to input a destination number to the communication section in order to communicate with the destination, and in a second mode to input data to the input field. A controller controls a status of the hardware keys in one of the first and second modes. The controller controls the hardware keys to input data to the browser when an input position is in the input field, and controls the hardware keys to input a destination number to the communication section when the input position is out of the input field.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for minimizing a retransmission of signals and messages when an errored message is received during an xDSL negotiation procedure of a communication session. A receiving section monitors received data related to a Frame Check Sequence of an xDSL negotiation procedure. When the receiving section determines that an errored message is received, a retransmission request device transmits a retransmission request message. The retransmission request message indicates which correct message was lastly received. However, if a predetermined number of errored messages occur, the communication session is terminated.

Abstract: The present invention provides a plurality of destination screens having a plurality of pages, in which a plurality of destination selection keys are displayed. The destination screens are displayed in layers, each screen having a tag to select a desired destination screen. When a specific tag is selected, a page of the corresponding destination screen with a registered destination selection key is displayed. When page scroll key are pressed, the registered destinations can be searched as each page of the destination screens is scrolled in the ascending/descending order. When no more pages can be scrolled in one destination screen, another destination screen is displayed, instead of terminating the operation. Therefore, it is not necessary to perform a separate operation to switch to another screen, when no more pages can be scrolled by pressing a page scroll key. Accordingly, it is possible to reduce the operator's burden to find a desired destination, thereby improving the convenience of the operation.

Abstract: Method for terminating a startup session of a full duplex or half duplex communication to be established between a central terminal and the remote terminal. When predetermined data is transmitted upon reception of an ACK message transmitted by one of the central or remote terminals, a data transmission in the startup session is suspended. If the other one of the central or remote terminals receives the predetermined data and thereafter detects a predetermined period of silence, the startup session is terminated.
