Abstract: Metal coatings are stripped from base-metal substrates in an electrolytic process employing an aqueous solution of alkanesulfonic acid of 1 to 4 carbons as the electrolyte at a concentration of from about 45 to about 70 weight percent, the coated base-metal substrate as the anode, and an electroconductive cathode, by impressing an electromotive force across the solution between the electrodes until the current decreases to zero which occurs when the metal coating on the anodic material is depleted and the base-metal substrate is left exposed.
Abstract: A multi-layer stack of dielectric films containing at least one piezoelectric-sensitive (PES) film is subjected to a high dc field strength while the stack is maintained at an elevated temperature to induce piezoelectric properties in the PES films. Various stacking arrangements of the films in the multi-layer can be used to obtain enhanced piezoelectric properties for various PES films in the multi-layer stack.

Abstract: A biologically active agent-containing composition is prepared by reacting an aqueous emulsion or dispersion of a suitable biologically active agent and an optional filler in an aqueous solution or gel of a polyhydroxy polymer and an inorganic salt, with a boric acid or boric acid derivative until an insolubilized matrix phase is formed having entrapped therein uniformly dispersed, discontinuous domains of said agent and an optional aqueous phase that can be separated from the matrix phase by decanting, filtration, or the like; the product is then dried and ground to the desired particle size. The composition is applied to the soil or plants where the biologically active agent is slow released for controlling pests.

Abstract: Waste water from the preparation of salts of dithiocarbamic acid is detoxified by acidifying the waste water to promote hydrolytic decomposition of organosulfur compounds, passing an inert gas through the acidified water to aid in expelling decomposition gases thereby increasing the decomposition rate, and, optionally, adjusting the pH of the resulting solution toward neutral.
Abstract: Screw conveyor of solid bowl centrifuge has its flight member modified at the bowl dry beach area by welding sheet metal, for example, to trailing surfaces of the flight forming a chamber for rinse liquid driven thereinto. Leading or working surfaces of the flight are provided with a plurality of series of orifices per 360.degree. revolution thereof, each series comprising spaced orifices extending inwardly from a distal portion thereof and preferentially angled therethrough. Overflow passageways with cooperating baffles are provided. Thus, rinse liquid passes onto solids pile surfaces through orifices immediately inwardly thereof as well as through orifices submerged by the solids for passage of rinse liquid thereinto.

Abstract: A method for maintaining zero calibration values representative of average tare, or average empty cup weight, in an article sorting machine of the type employing cups to sort articles by weight comprises the steps of measuring the weight of each cup, and if the cup is carrying an article, the weight of the cup and the article, passing over an electronic scale, and determining whether the cup is carrying an article based upon the value of a weight signal provided by the electronic scale. A running sum of the values of the weight signals for the cups determined not to be carrying articles is maintained. A count of the number of cups determined not to be carrying articles is also maintained. After a selected interval, the running sum is divided by the count to arrive at an updated average tare, or updated average empty cup weight.
