Abstract: A fingerprint recognition system intended primarily, but not exclusively, for mobile phones in which a fingerprint recognition system recognizes the separate fingers and thumbs of a user and determines a function of the phone which has been previously associated with that recognized finger/thumb of the user. The determined function is then carried out by the phone. The automatic dialling of a predefined telephone number may be associated with each finger/thumb of the user, or other functions such as the selected ring tone may be associates with certain fingers/thumbs. A particular finger/thumb may have different functions associated with it depending the mode of operation of the phone.
Abstract: A cellular system comprises base stations and terminals. A certain first base station (105) supports only a certain first modulation method (301) and a certain second base station (104) supports both the first modulation method (301) and a certain second modulation method (302). In order to perform cell reselection there is communicated information to the terminal (101) about which modulation method those base station support, the cells of which are possible new cells for the terminal. A new cell is selected by utilizing the information about which modulation methods the base station support.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for operating a channel coder, as is a channel coder that operates in accordance with the method. The method includes steps of (a) maintaining a first count (N_Number) of transmitted packets and a second count (K_Number) of packets that are erroneously decoded at a receiver; (b) periodically performing a plurality of statistical tests using current values of the first and second counts; and (c) based on a result of the statistical tests, controlling the channel coder to either maintain a current channel coding technique or to switch to another channel coding technique. The step of controlling includes a further step of resetting the first count and the second count.
Abstract: According to the present invention a radio communication device is presented. The device is operated by user input means. The user input means comprise a circular ring which surrounds a display. The ring is mounted for rotational movement and by movement of the ring the functions of the communication device are controlled and information is entered. Abstract: In a cellular system information is transmitted from a base station (100, 400) to a terminal (101, 500). Between the base station and the terminal there is defined a paging channel (110) in order to transmit requests for establishing downlink connections, and a broadcast control channel (108, 109) in order to transmit general information concerning the base station's cell. General information concerning the base station's cell is transmitted on the paging channel (110) when the paging channel's (110) information transmission capacity is higher than the total amount of information which has to be transmitted regarding the requests to establish downlink connections.

Abstract: In a speech recognition method and apparatus, according to the present invention, feature vectors produced by an analysing unit of a speech recognition device are modified for compensating the effects of noise. According to the invention, feature vectors are normalized using a sliding normalization buffer (31). Abstract: The invention relates to a method (500) and an arrangement for defining transmission power in a mobile station. The invention can preferably be applied in a TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) cellular system which offers broadband services and in which the number of time slots to be used for data transfer can be changed during the connection (530). Abstract: Apparatus and method for concealing an error in a frame of a video sequence. Abstract: A method of coding an audio signal comprises receiving an audio signal x to be coded and transforming the received signal from the time to the frequency domain. Abstract: A method of operating a mobile communication system supporting data transmission between a mobile station (MS) and a network in a number of a different packet data protocols (PDPs) including a point-to-multipoint-multicast (PTM-M) protocol. PDP data is formatted and unformatted by a subnetwork dependent convergence protocol (SNDCP) according to the PDP of data. The PDP is identified to the SNDCP by a protocol identifier transmitted between the network and the mobile station. Abstract: A support for an optical system of a digital camera is constructed which provides adjustable positioning of the lens elements in response to signals from the camera control processor.
