  • Patent number: 5574557
Abstract: The invention demonstrates an apparatus and a method for performing sub-Poissonian interference measurements using an interferometer with a beam splitting element, a first photon input A, a second photon input B, a first photon output C, and a second photon output D. The apparatus has an optical path length adjustment for introducing an optical path length difference .theta. such that the interferometer operates as a phase-dependent beam-splitter. In this mode photons delivered to the first photon input A exit through the first photon output C and photons delivered to the second photon input B exit through the second photon output D. The apparatus also has a radiation generating device for producing photons in an intensity-squeezed state in which the amplitude a.sub.o.sup.2 of the photons ms substantially certain and the phase .phi. of the photons is substantially uncertain, and for delivering the photons to photon inputs A, B.

  • Patent number: 5569394
Abstract: An insulating material is electric discharge machined with high dimensional accuracy at a high speed, by closely adhering mesh-shaped electroconductive material 5 onto the surface of an insulating material 1 so as to form an electroconductive layer 6 at the initial stage of electric discharge. In the advancement of electric discharge, fresh electroconductive layers 9, 10 are continuously formed at the bottom and the side surface of a hole 8, so that the electric discharge machining is continued even after the hole 8 becomes deeper. A porous preformed body composed of fine metal wires or a complex body containing needle metal may be used instead of the mesh-shaped electroconductive material 1. Thus, electric discharge machining is performed at a high speed, and a machined surface excellent in flatness can be obtained with high dimensional accuracy.

  • Patent number: 5567153
Abstract: A transducer activated tool for contacting workpiece surfaces and directing fluid adjacent to the surfaces is disclosed. The tool may be ultrasonically activated by attachment to an insert that includes a magnetostrictive element. The tip includes distal surfaces shaped to contact the workpiece and additionally includes a fluid passageway internal to the tip that is bored generally along the centerline of the tip but is offset from the tip axis such that a discharge orifice is formed in the tip displaced from the distal tip end. The passageway is preferably angularly offset so that the discharge orifice is formed in the distal end of the tip about 2-8 mm from the distal end of the tip. The tip when shaped to conform to dental or tooth surfaces is particularly useful as a dental tool. In another embodiment the fluid passageway is eccentrically offset from the tip axis wherein the passageway is substantially parallel to the center axis but displaced therefrom preferably by about 0.1 to 0.5 mm.
