    Abstract: Machined steel blocks 1 and 2 have ridges 20 facing valleys in the opposite block. Polypropylene tape 3 to be heat-treated has sliding contact transversely over each ridge on each block. The blocks are heated by heaters 4. The gap between the blocks is adjustable to suit the material being processed. The gap is large enough so that the tape passing between the blocks is not constrained to deflect from coplanarity by more than its own thickness.

    Abstract: The attenuation and phase change of a communication channel have to be estimated for near-maximum-likelihood detection and this presents severe difficulties where rapid fading occurs especially in communication between mobile stations in cellular radio. A number of vectors are stored which represent possible sequences of received data symbols and these vectors are expanded on receipt of each further digital sample. Costs, representing a measure of the likelihood that sequences are correct, the lower the cost the higher the likelihood, are then derived for each vector on the basis of stored prediction of channel performance. Next the earliest data symbols in the vector with lowest costs are output as detected symbols and then the vectors with lowest costs as selected for storage in place of the original vectors. New channel predictions are formed from channel estimates for the current sample and stored for use in the next iteration.

    Abstract: A surveying and mapping implement indicates the level differences of the ground over which it travels, in relation to the distance travelled. It comprises a carriage consisting of a swivelling front wheel, two center wheels attached to the outside of a U-shaped vertical frame, and two rear wheels connected to the U-shaped frame by means of a thill and a universal joint positioned co-extensive with the axis of the center wheels. The universal joint permits the rear wheels to move up and down and sideways, as well as to twist in relation to the center wheels. The wheel base between the center wheels and the front wheel is identical with that between the center wheels and the rear wheels, in order to facilitate calculations.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method and device for an emergent treatment of hypovolemic shock caused by loss of blood. According to the new method an elastic covering tube is applied onto the injured part of a patient's body, said tube possessing two main characteristics: (1) it is twisted along its horizontal axis as a rolled-up tube the end of which is rolled onto said body parts and (2) the material used for the elastic tube has to provide a pressure of between 100 to 400 mm Hg and to possess a critical elasticity coefficient. The critical elasticity coefficient being defined by a given formula which correlates the thickness of the material, unstretched radius and length of the tube, and length and radius of the injured part of the body to be covered.

The holder comprises a helmet-like member at least partly surrounding subject's head, which helmet-like member is adapted to be set in motion by drive means and is provided with at least one head-clamping member appliable to selected locations on the subject's head. The head-clamping member is adapted to transfer the accelerating force produced by the drive means to the head. The arrangement being such that an effective component of the accelerating force applied by the head-clamping member to the head via selected locations thereon acts on the skull bone underneath the locations.
