Abstract: A skeletal fixation apparatus may include two or more bodies that are attached to two or more screws that have been inserted into vertebral bodies associated with a patient. The apparatus may also include two or more cylindrical members that are attached to the bodies to control the movement or alignment of the bodies when the skeletal fixation apparatus is being installed in the patient. The apparatus may further include a rod that includes a first curvature and a second curvature. The first curvature may be different than the second curvature and may be based on a medical diagnosis associated with stabilizing the vertebral bodies. The second curvature may enable the bodies to be immovably fastened to the rod in a manner that precludes the cylindrical members from contacting each other or causing a false torque condition to exist when the skeletal fixation apparatus is installed in the patient.

Abstract: A method of diagnosing and treating a glioma or a breast cancer is disclosed. The method of diagnosing comprises analyzing an amount or activity of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A2/B1 (hnRNP A2/B1) in a brain or breast cell sample of the subject, wherein an up-regulation in an amount or activity of hnRNP A2/B1 beyond a predetermined threshold with respect to a control cell sample is indicative of the breast cancer or glioma. The method may also be used for staging the cancer and for predicting patient's prognosis of survival. The method of treating glioblastoma and metastatic breast cancer includes inhibiting the expression and/or activity of hnRNP A2/B1.

Abstract: A system and methods for controlling pulse parameters during transcranial magnetic stimulation are provided. Multiple coils are placed on external body parts, and are controlled using an external control unit coupled to a stimulator having fast switches. The timing of the switches, as well as other parameters within the stimulator, determine the pulse parameters, such as pulse shape. The variety of pulse shapes obtainable using such a system and methods provides controlled physiologic effects within an internal body organ.

Abstract: A single photon avalanche diode for use in a CMOS integrated circuit includes a deep n-well region formed above a p-type substrate and an n-well region formed above and in contact with the deep n-well region. A cathode contact is connected to the n-well region via a heavily doped n-type implant. A lightly doped region forms a guard ring around the n-well and deep n-well regions. A p-well region is adjacent to the lightly doped region. An anode contact is connected to the p-well region via a heavily doped p-type implant. The junction between the bottom of the deep n-well region and the substrate forms a multiplication region when an appropriate bias voltage is applied between the anode and cathode and the guard ring breakdown voltage is controlled with appropriate control of the lateral doping concentration gradient such that the breakdown voltage is higher than that of the multiplication region.

Abstract: A pixel circuit includes a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) and a measurement circuit including a capacitance. The SPAD detects an incident photon and the measurement circuit discharges the capacitance at a known rate during a discharge time period. The length of the discharge time period is determined by the time of detection of the photon, such that the final amount of charge on the capacitance corresponds to the time of flight of the photon. The pixel circuit may be included in a time resolved imaging apparatus. A method of measuring the time of flight of a photon includes responding to an incident photon detection by discharging a capacitance at a known rate and correlating final capacitance charge to time of flight.

Abstract: A circuit receives a parameter signal at a set or reset input, a clock signal at a clock input and a constant digital value at a data input. A synchronous signal is output from the circuit: wherein when the parameter signal is in a first state, then the output synchronous signal has the digital value; wherein when the parameter signal transitions to a second state, then the output synchronous signal transitions to an inverse of the digital value at substantially the same time; and wherein when the parameter signal transitions back to the first state, then the output synchronous signal transitions to the digital value on a next clock edge.

Abstract: Techniques for implementing series-fed antenna arrays with a variable dielectric waveguide. In one implementation, coupling elements with optional controlled phase shifters are placed adjacent each radiating element of the array. To avoid frequency sensitivity of the resulting array, one or more waveguides have a variable propagation constant. The variable waveguide may use certain materials exhibiting this phenomenon, or may have configurable gaps between layers. Plated-through holes and pins can control the gaps; and/or a 2-D circular or a rectangular travelling wave array of scattering elements can be used as well.

Abstract: Reconstruction in positron emission tomography is performed with partially known attenuation. A PET-CT scanner is used to generate a PET image with time of flight emission information. To limit x-ray dose while providing increased sensitivity at the ends of the CT volume in the PET image, attenuation coefficients for oblique LORs passing outside the CT volume are determined from the time of flight emission information. The attenuation coefficients for LORs within the CT volume are derived from the CT data. An objective function may be maximized for the emission distribution without reconstructing the attenuation distribution.
