  • Patent number: 8552286
Abstract: A method for controlling a photovoltaic (PV) panel in a PV system including a computing device that provides motor control signals and implements an iterative adaptive control (IAC) algorithm for adjusting an angle of the PV panel. The IAC algorithm relates P at a current time k (P(k)), an elevation angle of the PV panel at k (?S (k)), P after a next step (P(k+1)) and an elevation angle of the PV panel at k+1 (?S (k+1)). The algorithm generates a perturbed power value P(k+1) to provide a power perturbation to P(k), and calculates ?S (k+1) using P(k+1). The motor control signals cause the motor to position the PV panel to achieve ?S (k+1). A change in P resulting from the positioning is compared to a predetermined change limit, and only if the change in P is ? the change limit, again sensing P, and repeating the generating, calculating and positioning.

  • Patent number: 8551556
Abstract: High aspect ratio structures can be obtained by print-patterning masking features in feature stacks such that each feature has a lateral edge which is aligned in a plane roughly perpendicular to the plane of the substrate on which the features are formed. Due to the differential lateral spreading between features formed on a substrate and formed atop other features, the print head is indexed less than the radius of a droplet to a position where a droplet ejected by the print head forms an upper feature atop a lower feature such that the lateral edges of the upper and lower features are aligned in the plane roughly perpendicular to the plane of the substrate. Feature stacks of two or more features may provide a vertical (or re-entrant) sidewall mask for formation of high aspect ratio structures, by e.g., electroplating, etc.

  • Patent number: 8555400
Abstract: A private stream aggregation (PSA) system contributes a user's data to a data aggregator without compromising the user's privacy. The system can begin by determining a private key for a local user in a set of users, wherein the sum of the private keys associated with the set of users and the data aggregator is equal to zero. The system also selects a set of data values associated with the local user. Then, the system encrypts individual data values in the set based in part on the private key to produce a set of encrypted data values, thereby allowing the data aggregator to decrypt an aggregate value across the set of users without decrypting individual data values associated with the set of users, and without interacting with the set of users while decrypting the aggregate value. The system also sends the set of encrypted data values to the data aggregator.

  • Patent number: 8551145
Abstract: The implant is a fixation device shaped in the form of a plate for use in the fixation and stabilization of the thoracolumbar spine. The design and the configuration of the device allows for an anatomic fit of the plate in the spine. The improved fixation allows for an anatomical and biomechanicat advantage in stabilizing thoracolumbar spine trauma both in a primary fashion and/or in conjunction with vertebral body replacement. Its anatomic design allows the application of an ingrowth surface at the host/implant interface and encourages an additional point of fixation in cases at high risk for delayed or non-union such as severe trauma or malignancy. The thoracolumbar spine plate is anatomically designed to fit snugly against the thoracolumbar vertebral bodies through a twist around the Z (longitudinal) axis of the generally rectangular plate.

  • Patent number: 8554533
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for advancing time in a distributed business process simulation are disclosed. The methods and apparatus simulate an interdependent business process, such as a financial transaction system, in a secure distributed manner. Each business entity that is part of the interdependent business process models itself on a local client device at any chosen level of detail. A simulation server connects the separate client based simulations into one large simulation. Details of each local simulation may be hidden from other simulation participants. However, interruptions in business flow caused by simulated disruptions introduced at the simulation server and/or a client device are propagated to all of the effected simulation participants via the simulation server. In addition, simulation time may be warped from one breakpoint to another breakpoint thereby facilitating an efficient ratio of simulation time to real time.

  • Patent number: 8551713
Abstract: The present invention relates to a series of markers and a method of determining cause of death post-mortem by quantifying thymus integrity. An examination of thymuses from human infants suffering mortal head trauma revealed a disruption of the cortical-medullary organization of the thymus, particularly involving dissolution of the cortical-medullary border. A similar result was obtained for related mouse and rat models. The human thymuses from head trauma cases also displayed a higher percentage of Ki67-positive thymocytes.

  • Patent number: 8554343
Abstract: A method solves a quadratic programming (QP) problem in real-time implementations of model predictive control for automation applications. The method can be implemented for fine-grained parallel solutions. Due to the extreme simplicity of the method, even serial implementations offer considerable speed advantages. The method solves the problem by formulating, over a predetermined time interval, an optimization problem with a quadratic cost function, and linear state and control constraints as a quadratic program for the application. Then, the quadratic program is solved by applying a parallel quadratic programming update law starting from a positive initial estimate to obtain control actions for the application.
