Publication number: 20130208891Abstract: A wireless communications device stores a first cryptographic key in connection with a profile, the profile indicating a security type requiring no credentials and a network name. An access point (AP) supports a wireless local area network (WLAN), the WLAN having the network name, the WLAN supporting the security type and the WLAN requiring a second cryptographic key for encryption. The wireless communications device successfully authenticates and associates with the AP, thus joining the WLAN. Subsequent to joining the WLAN, the wireless communications device conducts encrypted communications with the AP and detects from the encrypted communications that there is a mismatch between the first cryptographic key and the second cryptographic key. Responsive to detecting the mismatch, the wireless communications device bans the profile or the AP or both.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 22, 2013Publication date: August 15, 2013Applicant: Research In Motion LimitedInventor: Research In Motion Limited

Publication number: 20130206980Abstract: A method for characterizing the saturates portion of a petroleum or hydrocarbon sample that includes compounds with boiling points of 1000° F. (538° C.) or higher includes use of laser desorption ionization (LDI) to desorb and vaporize petroleum saturates into the gas phase. After ionization, the saturate compounds cations can be detected using mass spectrometry. The mass spectrum generated from the ionized saturated compounds is then characterized by assigning molecular formulas to any “detected” masses that exhibit a peak with an intensity greater than a defined signal to noise threshold. After making the molecular assignments, the abundance of each assigned molecule can be determined based on the signal magnitude of the peaks in the mass spectrum. The assigned molecules and the corresponding abundances can then be grouped based on a variety of factors.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 15, 2013Publication date: August 15, 2013Applicant: EXXONMOBIL RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING COMPANYInventor: EXXONMOBIL RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING COMPANY

Publication number: 20130212678Abstract: A hardware sensor and a hardware user-input component are integrated in a portable electronic device. The hardware sensor is operable to produce hardware sensor output indicative of orientation or motion or both of the device within its environment. The hardware user-input component has multiple elements operable to accept user input through touch. A user-input driver and the device's operating system are jointly operable to detect touch events involving the elements. A software application stored in the device's memory is executable by the device's processor as a process. A sensor driver or the operating system or both are configured to control what hardware sensor output, if any, is receivable by the process. This control may thwart an attack based on analysis of the hardware sensor output, the attack designed to deduce what user input has been made via multiple elements of the hardware user-input component.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 15, 2012Publication date: August 15, 2013Applicant: RESEARCH IN MOTION LIMITEDInventor: Glenn Daniel Wurster

Publication number: 20130206220Abstract: A solar cell production method involves printing longer central gridlines and one or more pairs of shorter “side” gridlines such that end points of the two gridline sets form step patterns on octagonal (pseudo-square) substrates. A special printhead is used that includes a set of central nozzles which receive ink from a first valve by way of a first flow channel to print the longer central gridlines, and additional sets of side nozzles that receive ink from additional valves by way of additional flow channels to print the shorter “side” gridlines. The central nozzles have outlet orifices that offset in the process direction from side outlet orifices of the side nozzles. A start signal is simultaneously sent to the valves such that ink is substantially simultaneously extruded through both the central and side orifices, whereby the extruded ink produces gridline endpoints having the desired step pattern.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 10, 2012Publication date: August 15, 2013Applicant: Palo Alto Research Center IncorporatedInventors: Corie Lynn Cobb, Scott E. Publication number: 20130212392Abstract: There is provided a method and apparatus for resetting a password for a device or managing the device, the device having an encryption perimeter. A device shares a public/private key pair with a server, the public key being on the device and the private key being on the server. An intermediate value is encrypted on the mobile device using the public key. If the password is lost or the device needs to be managed, the server can request the encrypted intermediate value, decrypt it, and send the decrypted value to the mobile device which may then resume operations. A new password may be provided by the server or the user may set a new password once the encryption key is recreated from the decrypted intermediate value.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 15, 2012Publication date: August 15, 2013Applicants: QNX SOFTWARE SYSTEMS LIMITED, RESEARCH IN MOTION LIMITEDInventors: Sivakumar Nagarajan, Srdan Dikic, Mark A.
