  • Patent number: 8497914
Abstract: A night vision device and method for filtering a series of image frames that depict a moving subject, which thereby improves the signal-to-noise ratio of each image frame, is provided. A composite image is formed for each image frame by combining pixel values in a current image frame with pixel values in composite images corresponding to image frames acquired before the current image frame. Additionally, pixels values in image frames acquired subsequent to the acquisition of the current image frame are included when forming the composite image. A bi-directional recursive filter is used to weight the contributions from the previous composite images and subsequent image frames with a decay constant. Motion of the imaging system is optionally compensated for by establishing a moving reference frame and shifting the image frames to account for this motion; thus, registering the image frames before filtering the current image frame.

  • Patent number: 8496844
Abstract: High quantum yield InP nanocrystals are used in the bio-technology, bio-medical, and photovoltaic, specifically IV, III-V and III-VI nanocrystal technological applications. InP nanocrystals typically require post-generation HF treatment. Combining microwave methodologies with the presence of a fluorinated ionic liquid allows Fluorine ion etching without the hazards accompanying HF. Growing the InP nanocrystals in the presence of the ionic liquid allows in-situ etching to be achieved. The optimization of the PL QY is achieved by balancing growth and etching rates in the reaction.

  • Patent number: 8498853
Abstract: Method for prediction of mechanical properties used in the description of large-strain plastic deformation for any subsurface rock strata of interest. The method is not specific to any geographic region, geological environment or subsurface depth interval, nor is it constrained to a specific lithology or plastic mechanical property. Predictive algorithms for triaxial compressive strength and rock compressibility are derived (23) from a mechanical properties database (21), and used to predict subsurface variation in mechanical properties such as rock strength or rock compressibility, with petrophysical properties generated from, for example, geophysical wireline logs as input to the algorithms (26).

  • Patent number: 8497506
Abstract: In transistor structures such as thin film transistors (TFTs) in an array of cells, a layer of semiconducting oxide material that includes a channel is protected by a protective layer that includes low-temperature encapsulant material. The semiconducting oxide material can be a transition metal oxide material such as zinc oxide, and can be in an active layered substructure that also includes channel end electrodes. The low-temperature encapsulant can, for example, be an organic polymer such as poly(methyl methacrylate) or parylene, deposited on an exposed region of the oxide layer such as by spinning, spincasting, evaporation, or vacuum deposition or an inorganic polymer deposited such as by spinning or liquid deposition. The protective layer can include a lower sublayer of low-temperature encapsulant on the exposed region and an upper sublayer of inorganic material on the lower sublayer. For roll-to-roll processing, a mechanically flexible, low-temperature substrate can be used.

  • Patent number: 8499282
Abstract: Scripting Language based applications can be limited in their ability to supply and execute sophisticated logic and complex processing. More traditional programming languages contain explicit function and/or procedure calls to implement more complex functionality, however, these languages use more complicated syntax and traditionally require mosophisticated programming knowledge to use. There are provided systems and methods for extending the capabilities of an application program for execution by a terminal. The application includes a script based workflow and non-executable content. One such method comprises loading the workflow for interpretation by a script interpreter, such that the workflow is configured for having a plurality of executable elements. This method also provides a global symbol structure for reference by the executable elements, the global symbol structure including addressing for coupling selected ones of the executable elements to corresponding external components.

  • Patent number: 8496634
Abstract: A colonic lavage catheter includes a head attached at an end of a suction tube and having both rearward and lateral fluid discharge openings. A pair of tubes extend along the suction tube with their ends attached to the head to place the rearward and lateral fluid discharge openings in fluid communication with a source of pressurized fluid. The suction tube includes a plurality of suction orifices through the outer wall along its length proximate the catheter head. A cleaning process may be performed by inserting the catheter head into the colon and then discharging fluid through the rearward openings to advance the catheter. At points along the colon, pressurized fluid may be discharged through the lateral discharge openings to lavage the adjacent walls of the colon, with suction being applied to draw the dislodged material into the suction tube through the suction orifices.

  • Patent number: 8498133
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link with Voltage Source Converters VSC and interconnecting two power systems. A model-predictive control with a receding horizon policy is employed for controlling the outer loop of a two-loop or two-layer control scheme or setup for the HVDC link. The two-loop control scheme takes advantage of the difference in speed of the dynamics of the various system variables of the HVDC link and the interconnected power systems. Model-based prediction representative of the interconnected power systems' behavior enables comparison of the future effect of different control inputs applied within the control scheme, while taking into account any physical, safety and operating constraints. It is valid for a complete operating range, e.g., it avoids performance degradation when moving away from the nominal operating point of the control scheme for a HVDC link.
