Abstract: Methods for rapidly concentrating a food sample for efficient detection of bacteria are disclosed. A microfiltration approach followed by centrifugation was used to concentrate the cells with an enzyme (e.g., a protease) added at the beginning of the process to facilitate more efficient micro-filtering. The enzyme was found to have no significant effect on cell viability.

Abstract: A method of detecting an event and recording quantitative parameters associated with the event is provided. The method includes securing an event detection and recording system on a piece of equipment, the event detection and recording system comprising a plurality of sensors, an internal power source, and a microcontroller. The method further includes activating a low monitoring mode and measuring one or more quantitative parameters with the one or more of the sensors at a first sampling rate to generate low monitoring mode sensor data; analyzing the low monitoring mode sensor data to detect initiation of a triggering event; terminating the low monitoring mode upon detection of the triggering event; and activating a high monitoring mode including measuring and recording one or more quantitative parameters at a second sampling rate, where the second sampling rate is greater than the first sampling rate. Abstract: A method for reacting a liquid phase chemical species includes the steps of providing liquid phase containing at least one liquid phase chemical species, providing a gas phase, and providing a reactor vessel for containing the liquid phase and the gas phase. The liquid phase and the gas phase are placed in the reactor vessel so as to form a liquid-gas interface between the liquid phase and the gas phase within the reactor vessel. A pulsed discharge cathode and anode are provided for creating a pulsed discharge electric field at the liquid-gas interface. A pulsed power input to the pulsed discharge cathode and anode is provided, thereby creating a plasma comprising ions at the liquid-gas interface. A secondary electric field is directed transverse to the liquid-gas interface, wherein the secondary electric field will drive ions from the gas phase into the liquid phase to react with the liquid phase species.

Abstract: An apparatus for confining plasma within a plasma processing chamber is provided. The plasma processing chamber includes a lower electrode for supporting a substrate and an upper electrode disposed over the lower electrode.
